Ricky Rubio - Take the Money and Limp

Do Not Sell My Personal Information
I'm a big believer that the Cavaliers will not have one set starting lineup this season. I'm expecting rotations, minutes, and even positional responsibilities to be in constant flux.

A big part of this consistent instability will be development over wins. Rubio has a track record of making players better when he's on the court. Unfortunately, two of the players he needs to help improve are ideally point guards as well. Most critically to development, I don't trust Lauri, Allen or Mobley to get the ball in great spots on offense if Garland and Sexton are the only two running the offense

Get ready for Rubio to play all over the perimeter, targeting different new skills for the younger players game to game.

Given our unusual roster of height extremes, numerous young players, lack of wings and new arrivals I would expect lots of changes game-to-game for matchup reasons as well. We're going to get smoked by established teams but that's not important compared to developing players and determining who we keep and who we don't. Hopefully we do better on the health front than last year.

For me I want Rubio to get Collin to play smarter, and to get Darius to play faster and more aggressive.

I think if you start him with Sexton you get to max out Sexton's ability which will either bring the best return or make him into a core piece going forward if he gets it. I really think a guy like him will have the light come on at some point and he will be able to take advantage of his gravity.

Then you have Rubio also there to get Mobley going which is more important than whatever he does with Sexland.

You have Garland off the bench year before his free agency. Tell him. "You need to outplay Rubio by doing what he does and also shooting the lights out. Take his job."

Darius is the one I want them to pressure. Okoro and Sexton are going to go hard every night. Darius floats too much IMO and he needs to get after it.

Exactly this. Mobley's proper development is first on the priority list, improving SexLand is second, and third is finding out what we have in them properly.

Starting Rubio will help all of that, I agree. For spacing you would have to start Windler in place of Okoro too, but that's another fast decision maker, passer, shooter so even better.

Smarten Sexton, light a fire under Garland and allow Okoro to gradually improve with favorable matchups and vets on the bench.

And the huge added bonus for us is if those things don't happen, at least we will have our clear answer if we should keep those guys or not.

All that makes too much sense for them to actually do it. With this team and situation, politics trumps logic.

Every personnel decision from here on out must first consider the
fit with Mobley. Players are either in or out. No messing around.
The quicker a winning team is built, the better the chances of
keeping the core piece happy and here.

Yes, I have done a 180 on my perspective. Before it was about feeding the young guys as many minutes as possible hoping one will turn out as an allstar. That changed once we had a bonafide talent

It has been obvious a long time that Garland and Sexton don't fit together. I don't care which one starts, I mean I do it's just that I think that it will quickly become obvious which one has to come off the bench, but they need to be broken up.

If we were to starting Rubio makes no sense to start garland. I’m starting Rubio although garland should get more mins than Rubio overall

Somebody is getting put on the bench for Rubio, period.

Who is it? My guess is Sexton.

The only issue with that is Sexton being benched in a contract year will likely ruin us in contract talks AND it would hurt his trade value at the deadline. Our first, Sexton and maybe another players looks like a good package for Ben SImmons right now, but our package is GREATLY damaged if Sexton is a bench player.
1 game in this statement i think is sustained

Rubio needs to start

to me it’s obvious but i understand why it likely won’t happen

Rubio had the offense moving and growing like a well-oiled baby.

He had a really, really bad stretch late in the game that killed momentum.

Also, he gave up roughly 100 backdoor cuts and maybe his defense is just a tad overrated at this point.

Yeah that sucked, but it's just one game. If his mentorship can be credited at all for improving Garland's point guard skills (12 assists is a fantastic start and the ball was moving well on offense the entire fame), then IMO that will be the single greatest thing he can contribute to this team.

Was he guarding Tyus Jones when he went off? Offensively undeniable. I though the Cavs were on the same page defensively only for a few good stretches. They were not communicating enough

Rubio is a notorious slow starter. When he takes an off-season break, he takes a Kevin Love off-season break.

In general, I expect the rotations on offense to be the cause of most team losses. Lauri is notoriously slow in recovering on defense, and he's playing more perimeter.

The positives will come from scoring above 110 more often, hoping Tower City Rejuvenations covers the defensive lapses.
