Ricky Rubio - Take the Money and Limp

Do Not Sell My Personal Information
Here's the NBA.com scouting report on his defense going into the draft...you can find similar things pretty much everywhere:

Let's be honest...does that sound like a player who's expected to defend exclusively PG and SG?
Where did the PG thing come from?

Okoro looks like a great defender. He's sized like a SG. Let him defend SG's and if he can grow into defending bigger players, then you give him that responsibility later.

You don't put things on the kid's plate that are going to set him up to struggle.

No.

I mean our coaching staff telling Sexton he was coming off the bench with Drummond this past year, and the only reason it didn't happen was Drummond throwing a bitch fit.

That was way after KPJ was gone and like 6 months after Okoro was drafted.

Ben said that he doesn't know if they even talked to Sexton about coming off the bench. I directly asked him that question. They scrapped the idea after Drummond refused to come off the bench.

He sounds like a swingman and I said nothing differently. I do know a lot of forwards shot right over his outstretched arms last season. His perimeter defense against dribble penetration and off-ball remains an asset.

Did you pull the wrong quote from his scouting report? Nothing in there disproves his ability to play shooting guard.

Yep, that. Sure sounds like the entire organization planned on Okoro starting, right?

I mean, I sure hope we all agree he can guard 1-2. If you think he's purely a 1-position defender, then that's an enormous whiff for a player who was lauded for his defensive versatility going into college.

I buy that, if his jumpshot continues to improve, he has the potential to be a positive-impact player at SG. I think he's much closer to being a positive-impact player at SF. Hopefully in the long run he can play both positions at a high level, because again, his versatility on defense in particular was supposed to be one of his biggest strengths.

When was this ever a thing?

Saw some 6'6"
Never saw anyone claim 6'7"

I remember the Cavs referring to him as 6'7 after they drafted him. I could be wrong on that. I do clearly remember them saying they thought he could guard 1-4. I think Koby even joked that they thought 1-5 but 1-4 was more realistic.

It never happened so how all in were they on it. Ben wasn't even sure they got to the point of having a conversation with Sexton to come off the bench.

They asked Drummond to come off the bench during a pre-game warm up, that's how thought out everything was.

It‘s great that we’re having this discussion. The “roster problems” are here because Koby had very little after LeBron left but has four good lottery picks and added Allen. We’ve drafted 8,5,5,3 and all of them are legit players. Considering how many busts go that high he’s done well.

Adding Jedi Master Rubio to this team will further help our kids develop.

What we really need is for our players to keep improving. That way they become more attractive trade targets if, as is likely, we need to make a move to balance the roster.

For me it’s all about 2023-24 season. We still have $0 committed for that season. It’s a question of who will be on the team bus at that time. Next two seasons are about getting better as individuals and as a team. We‘ll all learn who we want on that bus as time goes on.

Less than three months until the new season starts.

This is crazy. With he depth the Cavs have, you don't have to choose.

If Sexland is getting cooked, you can pull either of them and slide Okoro to the 2 and bring in Wade or Nance at the 3, or put Rubio in.

This is the best way to create defensive pressure on Sexton as well. "We want to keep you in, but you can't keep your man in front"

Pulling him for Delly hurt the offense, but Rubio will keep it going.

I agree with Nathan in the sense they need Sexland for offense.
This is pretty much how I see things.

Watching Ricky in the olympics getting me really excited for next season

I was thinking the same thing; it's all about the '23-'24 season. That's the year Love's contract is off the books. The Cavs should go into that season with Sexton (assuming they sign him to an extension), Garland, Okoro, Mobley, Allen, and Windler plus two more first round picks. They should have a young, talented, and experienced core in place with those six all between the ages of 22-26 with two or more years of experience.

They should have a ton of cap space with Love, Cedi, and Rubio's contracts off the books. They should be an attractive destination with all those pieces in place and plenty of money to throw around.

The next two seasons are all about developing the talent of the young players and making a decision on whether to go forward with Sexton, trade him, or let him walk.

Some points..

Rubio is short term, and coming off the bench. He will be a good barometer as to whether a defensive , longer point, will benefit Either Garland or Sexton.. But no way he starts..

The Only way Okoro comes off the bench is if we sign or trade for a real SF, like say Demar.. I am not sure Cam Reddish would drive him to the bench...

The same people have been trying to pigeon hole Sexton to a short shooting guard, and also arguing his ceiling is Lou Willie sixth man, are also trying to trade him. I get you guys are not fans.. but Sexton is very productive. His arc is better than Devin Booker.. He has the alpha dog mentality.. we have gaged his trade value, so we now know what he is worth.. what happens next is between us and his agent..

Expectations for Mobley are ridiculous. He is going to be good, if he stays healthy. I believe the Cavs will not run him as many minutes as Garland, Sexton and Okoro did their rookie years.. they are going to beef him up before putting him inside the tiger cage..

I like this move. I think a lot of people are overreacting about it’s significance, but I do agree that Rubio will really be able to help Collin and Garland develop.

We were going to spend the entire MLE on a backup PG. Now we can use it on other players. They badly needed shooting before shipping out Prince, so I hope they land Forbes even if he costs the entire MLE.
