Greg Newsome II Thread

Do Not Sell My Personal Information
In the conference call, he quoted, “ I feel disrespected if a guy or QB comes at me multiple times a game. That is something I take pride in

I love this guy - his confidence- in fact it is a small percentage but QBs were not able to complete a pass against him on 3rd and 4th downs this past year.

They didnt really throw his way, something like 35 targets in the 6 games he played.

Technique is excellent, 40 inch vert and 4.38 40 with 6' tall.

He needs to work on his fluidity a bit from what i can tell, but he is also only 20.

His movement/posture on the field kind of looks like Joe Haden to me. And he looks like him in the face. Have anyone ever seen those two in the same room together?

Those first two snaps are such a wet blanket over my positive vibe this morning :chuckle:
Yeah, as I said in the chat, I like the pick... but I think he’s primarily a backup in his first year. He’s intelligent and good in Northwestern’s scheme, which is similar to what Woods runs. I do think he’ll become a starting-quality corner, but we may be a year or so away from that.

Also, he is not Ward insurance. They practically play different positions.

I think you're spot-on. The fact that he was doing this at a young age and tested so well athletically makes me a bit more excited for him.

I like the way he tackles in space. I don't like the way he covers, and for some reason he just looks small to me--does he have shorter arms? Are my eyes just dogshit? I don't know, just watching him cover guys, he felt kinda like Jason Verrett. I never felt like this is a guy with size as a positive trait.

I think he'll be a hit. I think he'll work out. If you make me give my biggest concern is that he seems to have a lot of dropped passes or bad throws--plays that result in good metrics, like that low QBR against him--but plays that would get him burned in the NFL. I worry that the end result of those coverage grades played a larger part in drafting him than I'm comfortable with.

Those open field tackles are terrific. He accepts the challenge, or in today's world, he wants all that smoke. Him and Ward are going to wreck. Matter fact our dime/nickle formation is going to be insane.

Looks like he closes very fast on underneath routes and running plays. Shrinks the angles so quickly that it makes it tough for the receiver to evade him. Looks like a very sound tackler too.

Also seems to have great intangibles. That culture stuff is important.

He has excellent closing speed. I love how he's able to recognize where the play is going and react fast enough to get involved. That's a wonderful trait to have.

From the tape I've watched, he seemed to struggle to get off blocks during running plays, though. If he's in open space he does fine but I noticed a number of times he'd get absorbed into his blocker for quite awhile. I'm hoping if he can get some more strength and develop an NFL body he'll shed some of those blockers a little better.

I think the Browns wanted a guy that could be depth in the secondary this year and a starter for the following 3-4 years. Newsome accomplishes that.

My guess is that there is basically going to be a competition between Greedy and Newsome for playing time next to Ward. And at this point, I'm not confident Greedy is going to win that.

He looks like a natural tackler in the open field which was a glaring weakness on this team last year. His size leaves a bit to be desired but I thought the same thing about Ward initially. Newsome looks like he can make up for it with his instincts. I see a ton of upside with this guy.

Woke up just as disappointed as I was going to bed.

With 89, 91, 110, 132, Im really hoping the Browns move up from 59. Probably not high enough to get Elijah Moore or JOK, but just to really get their guy.
