The complaint his entire career is that he's basically a stat compiler. He got a ton of targets on a team with a QB with a noodle arm and became a top fantasy player, which tricked people into thinking he was also an elite receiver. But he's not. He's good, and certainly a starter, but he's not a top twenty WR in the NFL. He also never misses games, which helped with the stat compiling.

He's in a perfect spot now as a WR3.

I think the Browns have an upcoming crisis with their salary cap, especially now that Corbett is trending towards mega bust.

If the Browns have to prioritize re-signing Tretter, there is going to be a real problem with the salary cap next year. And it would pretty much cost the Browns Kirksey, Schobert, and possibly Randle as well. (Assuming they keep Landry/Landry doesn't give up any money to stay)
Kirksey is one of my favorite players on the roster, but unless he has a great year, he wasn't coming back next year on that contract, regardless of what the rest of the cap looks like.

Agree on the rest.

Except he isn’t very efficient with those targets.

Beckham can get a high volume of catches and high efficiency.

Oh no doubt Beckham will have the more yards and probably touchdowns, but if a defense is trying to take away our deep threat, Beckham might end up with 5 catches for 90 yards and a touchdown while Landry get 8 catches for 75 yards and a whole bunch of 1st downs that keeps the drive going.

We will see it play out, but I am trying to think how would I defend this team, and I would try to get pressure on Baker and take away Beckham, make some one less dynamic beat me. That means underneath throws to backs, tight ends and slots.

I certainly agree on this front. I just think it will more evenly distributed between every one else.

Honestly Landry has a knack for getting open underneath, if doubled, Baker's pre snap read will be to get the ball to a WR downfield and not a back behind the line. The back is the third option.

I definitely don't see him being on the Browns past his current deal unless he signs on a discount.

While I hate to ever bring up off-the-field impact in salary talks, the fact of the matter is that keeping Landry happy is going to keep OBJ happy. Landry's passion for the game is obviously infectious and he loves playing here.

If we weren't the Browns, I'd say that isn't worth a damn but the fact he helped turned the WR room around in a tumultuous year and helped recruit essentially the LBJ of the NFL to our team. That's worth something to me.

And this is where we run into a lot of problems.

Especially if OBJ needs Landry to be his support dog. If that's indeed the case, then the Browns are going to have some really big holes to fill and not enough cap to fill them. The hope is that guys like Sheldrick Redwine, Mack Wilson, Sione Takitaki and Austin Corbett can fill in holes for pro bowl level talents.

And that's only the start of this problem. Now imagine you add on Baker, Myles and Ward and their contract extensions into the mix. They make a lot now, but those guys will be near the top of the league at a premium position, which means Baker could get somewhere in the realm of 35 a year, Myles 20+ and Ward 20+. And you are still paying, essentially, a slot receiver and OBJ's emotional crutch near the top of the league value for not enough production and return on investment.

These are the same problems that KC was about to run into with Dorsey at the helm. Now they managed to escape by 1) Trading Alex Smith and replace him with a rookie contract MVP QB and 2) releasing any and all vets worth a damn. The Browns won't be able to do the same thing unless they plan on moving on from one of Myles/Baker/Ward.

Long story short, the Landry-OBJ-Browns triangle will come to a head soon and it may cost the Browns games if they NEED to have Landry on this team to keep OBJ happy.

Same questions persist in today's media climate.

It's so boring.

Is OBJ gay? Is he committed? These storylines just have such a shorter shelf life in the age of media, and until the media realizes that, they're going to continue doing this same shit over and over.

Fuck, lets just play already.

They should ask the players if they stand or sit while wiping

I don’t think it is going to be as bad as you think. There is no way we will be able to keep everyone, and if Baker is the real deal, he will be paid a ton in 3 years. The key now is to maximize talent over the next 3 years, then as players get past their first contracts you let them leave, get comp pics and have to draft well. If you have an elite QB and a front office who can draft that’s how you sustain. Long term you spend your money at QB, Edge Rushers and CB.

Apparently the media is still questioning if OBJ all in. They are awful in this town.

Ha and the followup, "but you've seen him been all-in since he's been here." I love how a phrase the Cavs coined is now used as a legitimate line of questioning. I wish Dorsey could upgrade the local media too.

"Yeah, he's all-in....all up in your wife!"

I think in a perfect world, he's a great #3. If Callaway becomes a legit deep threat and stops being an idiot, I think he's a great compliment to Callaway and OBJ.

As a #2 I think he's solid, but not spectacular.
Can you explain what Callaway has done to be a great complement to a OBJ? He averaged just 1 yard more per catch then Landry, had the identical catch percentage (Landry was 16% under his career avg), had the identical amount of drops (higher drop rate), with half the amount of targets.

Calloway has more talent than Higgins, but he is a poor mans OBJ in that he stretches the field and runs good routes, especially deep.

Higgins is actually the better compliment to OBJ As WR1, Jarvis as the slot, then a procession receiver like Higgins when we go 3 wide.

Now that said, I think Calloway will become the better receiver than Higgins because he has all the tools, will develop like Higgins has developed but Calloway does things you cant teach Higgins with his speed and athletic ability. This is not to insult Higgins who I think is WR2 on most teams and even WR1 on a few, its just reality.

Plus Higgins is going to get paid this offseason as an unrestricted free agent, I doubt we see him back. Cant pay and keep them all, hopefully he does enough that we get a comp pick for him.
