Welcome Todd Haley - Browns OC

Do Not Sell My Personal Information
So where is RCF's resident swinger, thru need to chime in on having the Haleys as a part of the local scene now...

Didn't Big Ben have a problem with Haley not allowing him to check out of calls at the line? If that's the case, I'm not particularly a fan of that type of rigidity. You need to be able to adapt; being monotone without all-time players is a bad recipe.

He’s a great OC.

Questionable temper, but fuck it, we need some fire offensively.

We need to get a veteran QB immediately though. Cousins, Alex Smith, etc.

How long before Haley and Gregg Williams beat the shit out of Hue? This should be entertaining to watch when Haley calls a play that goes 6 yards on 3rd and 5... When does the first argument happen? Also if Hue gets canned I think Williams takes over as HC and lets Haley do his nasty attitude on the opposing defense...

It's amazing to me to see how the Browns are managed. 2 years ago, we unveiled this organization that was radically different. It bucked the establishment of "football guys" and said we are going to do things differently here. We will look at things differently, use different metrics and assign values to things that would only be described in gut feels by "football guys".

2 years later, those guys are gone. We have an old school football guy picking the players. We have 2 coordinators who do things their way despite what the competition says.

It's the exact opposite of the direction they tried to go only 2 years ago!

One might argue, unsuccessfully IMO, that what we're seeing is a planned ebb & flow. To play devil's advocate, they brought in moneyball to do the demo & focus on getting assets for the future while the team on the field was of little importance to the "long-term plan". Once the coffer built-up, the owner kept the moneyball strategy guy, but adjusted the front-office from one of asset collection to player evaluation and selection. Therefore, it's been the plan all along to eventually bring-in seasoned player personnel people who'd look at the assets and take a job they would not have considered taking 2.5 years ago.

Personally, I see glaring holes. One, screwing your fanbase for at least two seasons back-to-back. Two, you're neglecting high picks you're making during those two seasons and hastily removing veterans from the lockerroom who can help the young guys become pros. Also, you don't know who's going to be available for "part 2" of the front office or if your assets will be valuable.

Well there goes that narrative.

Right. I assume that was a decision forced on Hue, but maybe not.

In any case, Haley is a legit threat to replace Hue, so hopefully we'll go 0-4, Hue gets fired, and we reel off 12 straight.

I'm excited to see the plan for the offense. As usual, there have been a lot of assumptions made. Most of the assumptions include Hue and Zampese as some evil force with Haley as a completely separate system. I really don't see it that way. All of these coaches base their offense on West Coast principles. All three claim they want a 50/50 mix of the run and the pass, but in the past a lack of talent has forced more passing at times. All three have spent the better part of the decade facing the same AFC North defenses. I'm hoping to see a mash up of what Cincy did when Hue was at the top of his profession and what Haley has been doing when all the skill position players are healthy. Hue can also continue to be more of a "warm demander" who maintains the respect of his players like a mentor, with Haley becoming the hard ass delivering the tougher love. I certainly hope we don't have to wait another year for some talent infusion for the offense.

I’ve seen a lot of people critical of the rigid game plan run by Haley and Gregg Williams. Sure I think the best teams adjust to their opponents religiously (Patriots), but you really need to trust your players and be a top team to focus so much on that. We didn’t win a game last year. Don’t we need to perfect our own system before we start adjusting a bunch? For all we know Haley and Williams would adjust if we could be proficient in our own system and had more trustworthy players. They could also be stubborn backwards thinking pricks, but we don’t really know yet. Just playing devil’s advocate here.

A big reason the Patriots adjust the way they do is their QB. With a young QB, having a rigid offense sounds like a pretty solid idea, but that's me. If Haley can impart his knowledge into the young guy, great. I worry more about how Haley works with Hue, they need to get along.

Soda- you are giving Jimmy too much credit. This was never the plan, he simply panicked into this. This was his solution to not firing Hue- he canned the FO instead.

I also agree that letting some of the vets go was idiotic and an early sign of Sashi's inexperience. But just like how Chris Grant had to watch another GM blow through the cap space and assets he painstakingly assembled, I wonder if Dorsey will be as frugal with what he has been handed and not just blow through it trying to win right away, ie, bundling picks together for foolish trade ups and what not. That's not to say Sashi should have stayed to use them, but when got for pay the price for something you don't value ia much... But that's my view on it.

They've won one football game over those two years. My heart isn't broken that they are going the exact opposite direction.

Hey man, I was just playing devil's advocate. :chuckle: If that was the plan, I don't think it was a sound, well reasoned one.

Might as well just cut out the middle step and change the thread title to Welcome Todd Haley- Cleveland Browns’ next interim coach

Just happy Hue won't be calling plays to be honest.

Think Haley is also an obvious replacement coach should the team start 0-6 or something.

Duke Johnson finally will be used correctly!

Why did we waste the associate HC title on Freddie Kitchens?
