I know plenty of us did the game sorting list in the "What are you playing now?" thread that determined our personal rankings, so it got me thinking -- what are some of the best games you've ever played? This can be based on a variety of things, whether it's actual gameplay, graphics, story, nostalgia factor, etc.

One of the greatest gaming experiences I've ever had was playing The Last of Us. I don't think I've ever played a game that believable in my entire life. The characters, the voice acting, the story, the raw emotion conveyed by fictional characters... it was one of those very rare moments that I think actually transcended simply being a game, and was more an actual experience.

Another of mine (and I might get a little roasted for this) was the Mass Effect series. Controversial ending aside, I really think that trilogy was one of the best sci-fi stories/settings to come out across any media in at least the last 10+ years, and I am really looking forward to Andromeda late next year.

Witcher 3 was a great ending to a fantastic series, and is a big reason why I am really looking forward to CD Projekt Red's next game, Cyberpunk 2077. They clearly know how to make a quality product.

Other games such as Halo, the original Pokemon games, Half Life and Half Life 2, Counterstrike, Golden Eye 007, Final Fantasy VII and X... those are also way up on the list, not because they were all great games, but because of the warm, fuzzy memories they left me with.

Gunstar heroes

Street fighter 2

Nba inside drive in the xbox

Sim city 2000

Syndicate

Are the first old games that come to mind. So they must have all made an impact on me

sim city 2000 was great, too bad they could never improve on it.

goldeneye n64 is still my favorite

Had this thread before.

The entire Suikoden series. Preferably 1 and 2 but all were solid.

Gourimoko is going to answer with Xenogears and the KOTORs. And his love affair with Street Fighter.

Boom.

*edit* Stupid me.

The first Mass Effect was an absolutely perfect game.

Last of US gave me the feels so many times. Really need to play the PS4 version.

Kingdom Hearts... nuff said

Red Alert 2 and GTA Vice City for nostalgia

Resident Evil 4 was so fucking good. I played parts of it on mute because i was too scared, but i still finished it anyways

The first resi was soo scary because to shoot a zombie in the head needed like 3 button pushes. My brain was not capable of doing that level of Co ordination under stress as a kid

To me the best games ever made are those that continue to stand out, regardless of time. They're compelling, fun, and drive the player to keep playing..

Best games ever (these are all perfect 10s):

Xenogears: This is hands down the best role-playing game ever made. It's a JRPG, but deals with some pretty heavy concepts and themes. You could write a book about this game, and it has many spin-offs including the Xenoblade and Xenosaga series, but there's nothing like the original.

Street Fighter 3: Third Strike: This is the culmination of years of perfecting competitive fighting games. Third Strike represents the most advanced, most perfected form of fighting system to date. Complex systems of the 90s found in games like Virtua Fighter, Third Strike, Alpha 3, and Tekken are now things of the past.

Final Fantasy X: This seems to represent the height of the Final Fantasy saga prior to Square-Enix losing their way. Final Fantasy VII was a great game, but X tops it in almost all respects other than nostalgia. There graphics, gameplay, fighting engine, mechanics, writing, direction, and pacing are all improved. This game has pretty heavy personal implications that are original and well-thought out, making the driving narrative much better than VII's (someone, again, casting Meteo). I could go on and on about how great X is.. It's really the height of the series.

Final Fantasy VII: This game is the one and only game in the Square lineup that really feels more like a science fiction story while in he first areas of the game. It's amazingly immersive, and the feeling of oppression is done so well that the first disc of FFVII can stand against any game.

Final Fantasy XII: While this game's story is somewhat weak, every other aspect of the game, from the graphics (among the absolute best on PS2, without question), the music (among the best of the franchise), the art (the best in the franchise to date), and most importantly the gameplay (the best in series) are all massive improvements over the previous games. XII is the one Final Fantasy game where a player can invest as much time into playing as he/she might in a game like Fallout or The Witcher -- there's just so much to do, and you want to do everything in this game.

Marvel vs Capcom 2: The most hyped fighting game ever. The hype is real, the matches are extremely fast-paced, and you absolutely must know what the fuck you are doing or you're toast. I'm considered a very good MvC2 player and I've played the absolute best players and held my own (consistently lose, but still).. I consider MvC2 / SF3 to be Capcom and the fighting game communities peak.

Halo 2: IMHO the best FPS to date. This was the first FPS that felt fundamentally different from all others previously. It was much faster in pace, and it's mechanics were just so fluid. If you never really got good at this game, it's hard to understand what I mean by this. Halo 2 represented the height of complexity in competitive FPS' IMHO. CoD represents a much lower standard of play, which is unfortunate.

I could go on and on so I'll stop there and just list some of the games that come to mind briefly and fill in-case someone wants to know more:

Knights of the Old Republic I & II
Phantasy Star
Phantasy Star V

Knights of the Old Republic I & II
The Old Republic is the only free download right for the TOR series? I have it downloaded on my other laptop but it wasn't fast enough and lagged. I got an upgraded laptop recently and looking to download it again. A lot of people say it is a great game.

I saw the Knights of the Fallen Empire trailer and it looks AMAZING. That trailer is too sick. That is what they should make a movie. Have you played that?

Looks like KOTOR II is only 3 bucks. I see on steam they got a deal for 13 star wars games for 23 bucks. Sounds tempting. My brother likes the Force Unleashed okay but says Star Killer is too OP and glad he isn't canon. He explained his background a little bit to me.

I have it and enjoyed it, but I think I had too high of expectations after I heard so many people say similar things. The actual gameplay could have been much better imo. It was more of a movie, which is cool, but hiding around sort of got old.

I've played them, but you've got to differentiate KOTOR or Knights of the Old Republic from "The Old Republic" which was an MMORPG based around the world of the KOTOR series. It was propelled upon the success of KOTOR I & II but it's nothing like those two games, not really in any way at all.

I actually don't recommend The Old Republic for it's story, but instead for a fun time just playing through a Star Wars like MMO world. The game gets a lot of shit for having some very early problems, but it's definitely a much better game today than it was then.

The Knights of the Fallen Empire was really a poor choice of names, I mean, they couldn't be more obvious as to what they're doing.

Knights of the Old Republic
Knights of the Fallen Empire?

I think that's unfortunate.. But don't be fooled by the name, it's not comparable to KOTOR outside of the most general possible sense. Not saying it isn't a good game - but I wouldn't group TOR with KOTOR, they are incredibly different games.

You really should play KOTOR 1 before KOTOR 2.

A lot of the environments are reused between games, and the evolution of the environments may not make much sense if viewed in the wrong order. Also, KOTOR 2 references KOTOR 1 repeatedly, as in, throughout the entire game the events of KOTOR 1 and Revan are of utmost importance.

KOTOR 1 can be downloaded from the usual places, if not just buying it on Steam. KOTOR 2 should be downloaded from Steam, and you should use the restored content mod.

That makes more sense. I didn't see much of a story in the short time I played The Old Republic, so Knights of the Old Republic is the one people really like.

I need to replay KOTOR and KOTOR II. Been too long.

On topic, haven't seen any love for Portal 2, which I'd rank as one of the ten best games I've ever played. It's just an utterly brilliant game from start to finish, like a Pixar movie in game form. By rights it should have no replay value because the puzzles don't change at all, but I've played through it like four times just because the game has genuinely great writing from start to finish. Also, Wheatley is probably my favorite video game character ever. Stephen Merchant knocked it out of the park with that performance.
