What is the greatest song of all time?

Do Not Sell My Personal Information
By the standard of nipple hardness at junior high dances, the answer is Stairway to Heaven.

In the South, applying that standard gives you Freebird. At least with the redneck girls.

I am surprised no one has mentioned Bohemian Rhapsody by Queen.

Personally its probably Stairway to Heaven for me, but have to give it to Queen too.

Also glad no one has said Smells Like Teen Spirit, i mean great song, but is given way to much credit. Personally I take Alice in Chains and Rooster over Nirvana in the Grunge battle.

I hereby take back anything I've ever said about defending European civilization and culture.

Dismiss you will, heights so dizzying as this?

My greatest Hip Hop song of all time....

Obviously rap is very subjective.....but this is the best song, off the greatest rap album of all time, IMO. Love the jazz undertones in the sample, and it jives with the background of his father who was a professional jazz player. One of greatest rap lines of all time...."It drops deep as it does in my breath, but I never sleep, because sleep is the cousin of the death".

Illmatic was just next level all the way around.

Most of my top picks are in here already, but here's what I've got off the top of my head anyways:

Africa
Stairway to Heaven
Sympathy for the Devil
Dream On
Smells Like Teen Spirit
21 Guns
Bohemian Rhapsody
Baba O'Riley
Hey Jude
Come Together
(I Can't Get No) Satisfaction

I could go on.

Agree we needed some Beatle songs in there

Props for putting in Dream On, that song is so good.

I feel that after around mid-90s music splintered so much that the every idea of commonly acknowledged "best songs" became a very difficult concept.

Is there a song from 2010 on that has legitimate claim? Or 2000 on?

Big seconds on Stairway, Sympathy, Dream on, and Smells like Teen Spirit. I know the last of those gets some flack, but it's one of the only songs where I can still remember the very first time I heard it, and though "holy fuck". And I don't even like grunge now. I'd switch up song selection from some of the other bands you've listed. So I'd go with:

Won't Get Fooled Again
While My Guitar Gently Weeps

I'd put Born to Run in there as well.

Some that probably aren't good enough but are still great songs:

Fortunate Son
All Along the Watchtower (Hendrix)

It depends on if you restrict the list of greatest songs to songs that were universal hits or not, many of my all time favorite songs weren't hits at all. For me, the cutoff is April 21, 2016. I posted one upthread that I have on my list of greatest songs that most people never heard. Here's a post 2000 one that would be on my list - this specific version.

And an older song, but again this specific version from 2004

Good point. None of my favorite songs are hits, and none of them have been listed here.

Okay so about an hour or so ago I hit up a happy hour spot for some drinks in downtown D.C. and they had open karaoke....

I just hit them with L.T.D.’s ‘Love Ballad’

I was almost welcomely raped by a Howard University sororitiy....

Since I keep seeing all the love for "Africa" I gotta say this - It's literally impossible to watch Kilimanjaro rise like Olympus from the Serengeti. It's over a five hour flight from one to the other. It's like singing about the view of the Northern Lights from Bangor, Maine.

Well, you're right that you really can't see Kilimanjaro from the Serengeti. But they're much, much closer than that. Kilimanjaro is only a couple hundred miles from the Serengeti. So you could have breakfast with Kilimanjaro looming over you, and have lunch while watching the great migration.

I think theoretically, if you were standing in the eastern part of the Serengeti on the highest elevation you could find, there's a chance you could see the top of Kilimanjaro on a very clear day. But I doubt it.

My dad lived in Arusha for 7 years, and my brother and I spent a month there just about every year. Been to both places 5-6 times, and couldn't see Kilimanjaro even from Arusha, which is a good bit closer than is the Serengeti.

But the song is still a quintessential example of yacht rock. Ugh.
