I am surprised no one is asking for him at all. Why isn't he getting a backup spot or something? Is he that bad in the locker room? I mean he must be poison or surely someone would pick him up to play the 4.

One thing I noticed about him is that he has not transformed his body the way a lot of older guys who stick in the league have. It seems like older guys lean out as they get older to stay as quick as they can and save the wear and tear on their joints.

From the stuff I've heard on podcasts and reading articles, it's more about Melo not adjusting his game to what he is now. Most say he is good in the locker room. It more about him adjusting his game to be a 3rd star, which is more like a role player than a #1 or #2 option. In both OKC and Houston they had to adjust to playing with Melo more than Melo adjusting his game to play with their #1 and #2 stars.

I think he is done in the NBA unless some star gets hurt late in the season and they have no incentive to tank. He had two chances to show he could readjust his game to the level of player he currently is and he didn't do it. I don't think anyone else is giving him that chance anytime soon.

This is weird to me too. He's not great anymore but there are worse players who get a spot in the league surely, no?

What does Carmelo bring, solely from a skills perspective, to a Role Player's job on a team right now?

He's an awful defender. He's a bad rebounder. He's never been one to move without the ball and get himself open.

He's a spot up shooter, but so are lots of other guys with more rounded games.

He can still score one on one, that is what he would bring.

I have never been a Melo fan, empty stats, but off the bench, in a 15 minute a game gig, he could provide a scoring punch while top scoring options rest. The issue is he is not ready to except that role, so thus he remains out of the NBA if he wont except the one usefull role he has left.

yeah I would say like Lee you could use him in a David Lee sort of way off the bench, but I think you are right about rebounding. If he is going to play backup 4 minutes you need to rebound.

Man, it is crazy how different the career trajectories of Lebron and Melo turned out. Carmelo was looked at as the not as good of a playmaker better shooting Lebron and that is just laughable now. Carmelo's game never developed.

The issue is that the brand of scoring Carmelo made his living on - 1 on 1 from midrange and in - just isn’t coveted anymore.

David Lee is an example of a guy who did the dirty work on the class and was a very good of hit great passer for his position in addition to being able to put the ball in the hoop.

yeah it is amazing how fast the league has moved away from certain things. Carmelo's game got left behind. Funny how something similar happened to Iverson.

Nothing you are saying is wrong, but Carmelo would have a job if he would except a role job. He isn't even a #3 scorer anymore, if he would accept a 10-15 minute a night gig, he would be signed. Unfortunately, Carmelo thinks he is still a 30 minute a game dude and he is not.

Melo is a 35% career 3 point shooter and has average over 40% a couple of times during his career. The issue is Melo is a chucker and not selective about his shots. If would embrace efficiency and only take 3's when truly open, then he would shoot over 40%, but Melo has not embraced this and thus looking for a job.

Being able to get your own shot is still coveted in the modern NBA, and Melo can do that. The issue is you have to be efficient while getting your own shot, and Melo is not efficient by todays standards and refuses to be more selective with his shot selection.

I'm actually surprised that Melo didn't lobby hard to get on to the Fiba world cup team. They have some real questionable talent at this point and Melo has always been good on the international stage. He could really sell himself to NBA teams during that time.

Maybe he should sell himself to EURO teams...

He feels too entitled to work hard for his shot at getting back in the league...same deal with how he feels entitled to 30 mpg and not updating his game.

Maybe the Lakers will give him a chance now that Cousins is out, although I doubt it

USA Basketball Declines Carmelo Anthony's Request to Join Team For FIBA World Cup

By CHRIS MANNIX
August 08, 2019
LAS VEGAS – Three-time Olympic gold medalist Carmelo Anthony expressed interest in playing for USA Basketball during the 2019 FIBA World Cup, USA Basketball Managing Director Jerry Colangelo told SI.com, but was told the team was moving forward with a new group.
In an interview on Wednesday, Colangelo expressed deep respect and appreciation for Anthony’s contributions to USA Basketball. The 2016 USA Basketball Co-Male Athlete of the Year, Anthony is arguably the greatest player in USA Basketball history. Anthony won a bronze medal in the 2004 Olympics, following it up by helping the U.S. to three consecutive gold’s in ’08, ’12 and ’16.
According to Colangelo, Anthony requested a chance to play through a representative. Colangelo, though, believed it was time to move on.

“I love Carmelo,” Colangelo said. “He made a great contribution. He was a very good international player. But for where we are and what we’re doing, that conceivably could have been a distraction. I understand why the request was made. He’s trying to reestablish himself. I think that has to be done in the [NBA].”
Anthony, 35, is a free agent after playing just ten games with the Rockets last season. He was effectively dismissed from the team in mid-November and traded to Chicago last January. The Bulls waived Anthony on February 1st.
Anthony has averaged 24 points in 16 NBA seasons.
