USA Basketball Declines Carmelo Anthony's Request to Join Team For FIBA World Cup

By CHRIS MANNIX
August 08, 2019
LAS VEGAS – Three-time Olympic gold medalist Carmelo Anthony expressed interest in playing for USA Basketball during the 2019 FIBA World Cup, USA Basketball Managing Director Jerry Colangelo told SI.com, but was told the team was moving forward with a new group.
In an interview on Wednesday, Colangelo expressed deep respect and appreciation for Anthony’s contributions to USA Basketball. The 2016 USA Basketball Co-Male Athlete of the Year, Anthony is arguably the greatest player in USA Basketball history. Anthony won a bronze medal in the 2004 Olympics, following it up by helping the U.S. to three consecutive gold’s in ’08, ’12 and ’16.
According to Colangelo, Anthony requested a chance to play through a representative. Colangelo, though, believed it was time to move on.

“I love Carmelo,” Colangelo said. “He made a great contribution. He was a very good international player. But for where we are and what we’re doing, that conceivably could have been a distraction. I understand why the request was made. He’s trying to reestablish himself. I think that has to be done in the [NBA].”
Anthony, 35, is a free agent after playing just ten games with the Rockets last season. He was effectively dismissed from the team in mid-November and traded to Chicago last January. The Bulls waived Anthony on February 1st.
Anthony has averaged 24 points in 16 NBA seasons.

How the mighty have fallen.

Wake up call. If this doesn't get him to change his attitude, nothing will.

This is sort of shocking. D'arron Fox declined. Kuzma is playing because nobody else will.

A wake-up call at 4:20pm is pretty useless even if you work past 5.

At this point he's a bum. Washed up.

Plus -- correct divorce strategery is that the filing doesn't happen until the wife is sure he's signed the last contract. Pretty obvious to her and her attorney that he's not signing for much -- if anything -- so that's another sign.

They should have given him a shot on the national team, honestly. He’s done a lot for the program with no financial compensation and he could still make a contribution

Seems brutal. Who's the last guy who went out like this?

Carmelo hasn't actually been above average at any aspect of basketball in about 6 years

I agree they should have given him a shot. They have some real questionable talent on the team and they lost to Australia in an exhibition last night. Australia has 5 NBA players on their squad and none are close to star level. Delly, Mills, Baynes, Ingles, and Bogut should be a blow out waiting to happen.

Seems to me there are a few hundred other guys in the NBA who would be able to contribute more than a guy who can't even find a roster.

Melo has played probably his best basketball on the international stage. I'm not a fan of Melo's game but it some how works when he is playing with Team USA. I think they need the leadership and more than just Harrison Barnes for someone who has played in FIBA world cup or the Olympics.

The roster is set now but it's going to be a disaster if they lose because so many star players pulled out.

He's a significantly worse/older player than he was the last time he played internationally.

Had his best seasons at age 28 and 29. 5-6 years ago.

So according to that Carmelo has never been above average?

His age 29 season was about 6 years ago, there have been 5 seasons since then.
