In professional sports as a player or head coach and how many years away? I think probably the NBA will hire a female head coach in the next 10 years. Probably 35 more years to see a female play basketball in the nba

That girl that coached in SA would appear to be the most likely candidate in the future. Still looks doubtful even though I know she is highly respected by all.
As for biological females playing in the NBA…..that’s a dumb thought to be honest. It’s a proven fact that men are significantly bigger, faster and stronger.
I’d bet the greatest WNBA player (know idea who it is, I can’t even name 3) probably wouldn’t even legitimately make a G league team.

Already happened in the 70s didn't it? Pacers had a guard iirc

They just all seem super unlikely anytime soon as athletes. NBA head coach is probably the most likely.

I've not watched enough hockey to know, but it seems like that would almost be more likely than any of the other sports.

Other than an “Eddie Gaedel” type stunt women are not going to be playing in the NBA. No woman can come close to the elite level of the very best players in the world.

That would depend on how you define "woman".

Or do you mean "person with uterus?"

This hypothetical woman would have to be an elite shooter, most likely, and elite ball-handler.

Because yes, athletically an elite woman at best may be average at the NBA level physically (and lets be clear, average at the NBA level is elite compared to the norm).

But, there are many 'mediocre' athletes who have had very good NBA careers by doing something at an elite level.

I don't see any reason why a woman couldn't get consistent results in a professional racing series. Plenty of girls kick ass in karting. Unfortunately, I think societal gender norms push a lot of them to pursue other interests as they get older.

Racing requires rapid visual-spatial processing and reaction time, and with a vehicle no less. In terms of mental advantages, visual-spatial processing is one of the few areas where there's statistically significant differences between the sexes found across all cultures, and men have the advantage. They're also more likely to be risk takers. You won't find many of us women wanting to race -- too spatial, too fast and dangerous.

Is it any more dangerous than mmA? Women are signing up and excelling at that sport.

MMA is also significantly more accesable to wider range of people. It's televised more and the classes in various fighting disciplines are pretty cheap and fairly easy to find in most places.

If you take a look at the NBA and the Cavs in particular, a physically average NBA player is basically Cedi. If Cedi suddenly got dropped in the WNBA, he'd just destroy everybody. Looking at the top 25 All-Time leaders in 3P%, I believe there was only one over 5'10", and they're not shooting from an NBA 3pt line. I don't think training/evolution can make up the biological differences in size/strength/length/co-ordination etc.

I guess the more interesting question to me would be could the WNBA MVP be 1st team All-Conference or an All-American in Men's NCAA basketball?

manon rheaume already played in the nhl in the early 90s. It was preseason though.

It matters if we are discussing having a solid season/few seasons or winning at an individual sport, or having a one game appearance.

The easiest path in a sport with heavy contact is to be a position with less every day contact. Like Manon Rheaume as a goalie or a punter/kicker in football.

For baseball it would be very difficult. The female athletes would be learning with a different ball and field size. The women's NCAA softball fields are comparable to men's pony league fields. Maybe a reliever with a gyro-type pitch from years of throwing a softball in a different manner than a baseball, or who started from a child only playing baseball instead of softball? Like 17 year old Jackie Mitchell striking out Babe Ruth and Lou Gehrig in an exhibition game in 1931. Jackie's neighbor who taught her how to pitch was Dazzy Vance, a Hall of Fame pitcher with Brooklyn who led the league in strikeout from 1922-1928.

Tennis I could see playing in lower level qualifier tournaments, but not be successful long term on tour. The general theory is Serena Williams would be ranked somewhere between 500-1000 on the ATP. The average first serve speed of Andy Roddick, Rafael Nadal, Novak Djokovic and Roger Federer are between 113-116mph. Others on tour average between 121-126pmh. Serena's average first serve is 101mph, with Ashleigh Barty at 106mph. In 1998 at the Australian Open, Serena lost a one set match 6-1 to Karsten Braasch, who was ranked #203 at the time.

Rugby no chance. The combination of speed and strength is too much. Although I love to watch the World Sevens. Both the men and women are extremely talented.

Looking at Olympic track and field distance records, men outpace women by around 10%. Long/high/triple jumps are between 14-16% difference, and pole vault 18%.

I would be looking more at a superior female athlete competing at a high minor league/inferior major league at first. Basketball I think a WNBA/ NCAA college all-star player who was Euro-born going to a Euro league like Adriatic or Bundesliga. Or the same situation with the NBL in Australia.

Sports where the surface/field of play which rely on accuracy over sheer strength like billiards, bowling, corn hole or darts men and women should be able to compete within one group.
