Whisky Appreciation Thread

Do Not Sell My Personal Information
Have yet to find an Irish whiskey as good as Redbreast. Lots of quality options, but Redbreast is the best.
I'd say it's the definitive Irish Whisky. The only place to go above Redbreast, when you're staying down the middle of home plate, is to cask strength or longer age statements.

I feel like I can call Green Spot a better whiskey--but it strays away from those central Irish notes. It's more complex, and I love exploring it. But those floral, fruity notes aren't something I expect from an Irish.

Just got back from Mexico. Picked up Jameson - Triple Triple in the duty free shop. Never had it before but I’ll always snag a bottle of Jameson that I never see in the US.

Also, if any of you are rum drinkers. Havana Club is the best I’ve ever had. Straight from Cuba, so you can’t find in the US. I highlllllly recommend it. Super smooth and can go with coke and/or on the rocks.

Poking through my parents liquor cabinet in Cleveland. Found this in the back:

I think this might be a five year version from Buffalo Trace that hasn't been made in multiple years. I'll try a little later to see what it's all about.

So five year Old Charter - I get a lot of honey and toffee. There's a tiny burn at the end but it isn't terrible. Five years is a young whiskey in my book, and it has some young characteristics. This isn't very complex, but for me this felt like an opportunity to taste a product that has been out of production for a long time, a time when Kentucky bourbon wasn't as desired, competitive and cool as it is right now.

Picked up a bottle of Pikesville Rye earlier today and am sipping on it right now. It's been a long while since I've tried a bottle of Pikesville. I need to keep this one in my bar more often. It's a very nice pour of whiskey. I'd take this over standard Whistlepig 10 any day, and it's about thirty to forty bucks cheaper.

As part of a bachelor party I did a tour and tasting at Journeyman Distillery in SW Michigan. I really enjoyed myself and learned a lot about not only the production process, but how to properly drink whisky. As dumb as it sounds, I realized I've always been taking too big of sips and drinking it too fast. I took my time with some Maker's Mark last night and think I get the appeal now haha.

Yeah, if you take big sips you end up with all of the burn and none of the flavor.

Happy Saint Patty's Day. Just picked up a Japanese bottle called Toki and a bottle of Yellowstone, thought about an Irish bottle but two already seems like an overkill.

...what you guys drinking?

I know it makes a lot of people cringe, but I drink Jack Daniels, usually Gentleman Jack which is smoother that regular JD. I've tried all kinds of high dollar scotches and whiskeys, that connoisseurs rave over and to my personal palate they all taste like turpentine. Gentleman Jack on the rocks to me is smooth and pleasing, and it's my preferred buzz since I still can't use cannabis due to job requirements. I know to lots of other people it's the opposite effect.

The bottle of Toki wasn't anything special. I bought the Yellowstone purely because my wife and I finished the series a month ago. It is surprisingly accessible - big vanilla and caramel notes. We made green vanilla "Shamrock Shakes" from scratch for the kids and I dropped two shots of Yellowstone in for the adults.
