Whisky Appreciation Thread

Do Not Sell My Personal Information
I feel like every other time I go shopping for something this stares me in the face and I've never gotten it.

I might have to try it next time
Yeah that’s where I was for a little while. Kept seeing it and seeing it and eventually a spot had it around $40-45 and I pounced on it..

Absolutely. And totally agree. At $50 you may not get the best of the best, but that price point has some damn good whiskeys.

Yeah, there are an insane amount of great bottles in that price range for both bourbon and Scotch.

Wild Turkey Rare Breed, John J Bowman Single Barrel, Woodford Double Oaked, Russell's Reserve Single Barrel, Knob Creek Single Barrel, Pikesville Rye, Rendezvous Rye, Elijah Craig Barrel Proof, Weller 107, Old Forester 1920...the list goes on. Some of those are closer to $70 but still a good deal.

Funny you mention EC18, I won a chance to buy it at MSRP in NH state lottery and picked it up last week. Absolutely a special night sort of drink, but really enjoyed it.

From what I've read, Elijah Craig 18 can be hit or miss, which makes sense as it's a single barrel product. Mine was like a vanilla oak milkshake. The oak and pepper finish went on forever. Sad it's gone.

Sounds like you got a good bottle too.

I really like the Jefferson Ocean, as well as the Jefferson really small batch (very small? Something like that) where it's like a bunch of tiny flask-sized ones with numbers and they're all really unique.

At the moment Jefferson’s Reserve. Really enjoying it

I bought a bottle over a year ago as my "No Wives Allowed" bottle. I was very impressed but wanted to try others. Thanks for the reminder.

Picked up Macallan 12 double cask. Very smooth I think. Refreshing to me. I saw your post @Out of the Rafters at the Q about the brand being over rated after I picked the bottle up. For my novice self this bottle is pretty good :D
If there are any rum drinkers here, my colleague sent me a bottle of Ron Zacapa 23 Solera. Oh man is that great. Has a nice vanilla to it and should be had with a single ice cube. It’s fantastic.
Next in the list to pickup soon is the Oban Little bay that @bob2the2nd recommended I believe

I believe the knock that most people have on Macallan is that they strive to create smooth whisky more so than great whisky. I'd put them in the same group as stuff like Glenlivet and Glenfiddich. None of it is bad Scotch, but it's very unexciting Scotch.

I would never disparage Macallan to anyone else. They have their reputation for a reason. @Jack Brickman hit it on the head--they just aren't for me. (Btw, the Glenlivet Nadura cask is interesting enough for me--one of the only times I've had Glenlivet and been interested rather than bored).

In the same way I'm not going to say iPhones are trash. They just aren't for me.

Oban Little Bay is awesome. If you like that flavor profile, go for something from Talisker next.

I've been switching back and forth between a bottle of Blanton's and a bottle of Glenfiddich 14 recently. Both were gifted to me - one was a gift after getting engaged and the other was for a recent promotion at work. Since both were presents commemorating special events I'm not able to objectively review either, but I am definitely enjoying both. Said another way, I'd pour a dram of either for a good friend if he/ she came over to hang out, but these aren't sitting out next to the party mixers (looking at you peanut butter whiskey that the fiancée bought on a whim).

Picking up OHLQ's single barrel selection of 12 year Whistlepig this evening. Only 86 proof, finished in merlot casks, I'm not as excited about it as I was when I heard there was single barrel Whistlepig 12 available... but we'll see.

I need to check where the OHLQ Watershed barrel picks got released up here. Want to support a product made in our great state.

So tonight was my first voyage into the Jefferson’s Ocean Aged At Sea. Extremely impressed.

Regular Jefferson’s has a citrus-like flavor to me. This is a more sweet. A slight caramel/toffee kinda flavor in there. Much darker of a bourbon.

I really don't care for regular Jefferson's, but I always have a bottle of Jefferson Ocean on hand. Glad you like it.

The 12-year Whistlepig OHLQ Single-barrel pick (merlot cask) is really good and impressive for a rye. The merlot finish balances it in a way that a more exciting or interesting finish like a port could not. The port would overwhelm the whisky, while the merlot just sort of rounds off the rye and brings you in to those notable rye flavors--spicy, vegetal, funky whisky. It's really enjoyable.
