Baker Mayfield: Fire The Cannons

Do Not Sell My Personal Information
I'd rather just stick with Baker, because the other options aren't going to be very good or too expensive.

If there's a QB available in the draft that the Browns believe can be that franchise caliber QB, then there's no price too expensive to pay to move up and get them candidly.

Even if the price is multiple first round picks.

I’ve mentioned it to anyone who will listen, to be honest. My issue is it’s not like we can draft a highly touted rookie without trading up. Plenty of great QBs do come from outside the top 10, of course. Just have to find them.

Our team is built to win. I would hope and expect them to get aggressive and trade up in the draft for their guy a la Kansas City with Mahomes or Houston with Watson in 2017.

Yeah, it would hurt to invest multiple picks, but thankfully we're actually in a situation where we've got talent on both ends of the ball and a good offensive line (and probably a good coach too), so any rookie coming in would be set up to succeed, which hasn't been true in the past.

So there’s a couple of QB rumors going around

1. The 49ers are gonna move on from Jimmy G and acquire Matt Ryan

2. The Colts have interest in acquiring Carson Wentz

3. Jerry Jones is willing to move on from Dak if Dak doesn’t cave into the contract demands.

All of them will be situations to monitor throughout the season.

None of them have any interest for me.

Just so we are clear, I'm talking about trading or signing a vet.

I'm all in on trying to trade up for a young guy, if they can.

But that adds more teams to the already full bag of teams that will need a QB next year. It’s very likely that all the teams drafting ahead of us that need a QB won’t be in any position where they are willing to trade out of drafting one of the top guys.

That’s why regardless how thrilled you might be about the veteran QB market that may be the best option moving forward next season.

I will maintain my same stance on this until I'm blue in the face.

Baker Mayfield is better than any signing or trading for a vet. There is a reason these guys are on the market.

I am just saying the QB market (dumpster diving bin ) is more vibrant than usual and guys like Tannehill could easily fit in with our team. We can do both at the same time if needed with this team.

The front office is paid to figure it out.

Make someone an offer they can't refuse.

Find your guy.

So any QB who’s available isn’t better than Baker because he’s available? That’s crazy. Cam Newton, Tom Brady, and Teddy Bridgewater were all available in the offseason and they’re all way better than Baker. Just because a guy is available doesn’t mean he’s worse than your current QB. Guys get cut for contractual reasons or because new coach new system all the time.

A QB being available doesn’t make them bad.

The Browns weren't in the market for a veteran starter last offseason.

Three of the names you mentioned in an earlier post - Garoppolo, Ryan, Wentz - aren't even free agents and the other (Dak) the Cowboys is almost guaranteed to at least get the franchise tag.

The crop of actual free agent quarterbacks is ugly.

If we’re not factoring in cost of acquisition or contract and simply speaking on their ability as a QB, if Dak’s future isn’t affected by his injury he would be head-and-shoulders above Baker in this offense and with this personnel. It’s not even debatable.

I don’t think Dak will be available, but he’s definitely worth considering if Dallas wants to move him. When healthy we have a top 5 OL, the top RB duo, two All-Pro caliber WR, and some really good TEs. I’d have my doubts about the other guys mentioned, but this offense would be tailor made for Dak.

Teddy Bridgewater is pretty terrible.

But, you do have to factor that in.

Simply dropping $40 million unexpectedly into the salary cap will directly impact the roster.

Not necessarily with our cap space. We’ve been maintaining cap room with the idea we’d use it to re-sign players, one of which is Baker. If we aren’t re-signing Baker, we have the space to sign someone else without it affecting much of anything. Plus, if you’re advocating for Baker, his 5th year option would pay him $25+ mill as is. If you wait too long to act on a QB, the cost of not acting likely outweighs the cap impact. This offense has the talent to win now with the right QB.

If you think guys like OBJ and Landry will continue to play the good soldier riding it out with Baker playing like this you’re fooling yourself. Maybe they make it through this year, but they won’t last until the end of next season if the QB play stays the same gets worse
