Wine and Gold Scrimmage October 2, 2017

Do Not Sell My Personal Information
HOT TAKES:

Calderon looks very good. Runs the offense, calming presence on the court.

Zizic looks like he might be able to grab some minutes. I feel better about our backup center situation after watching him. High motor, can hit a shot, rebounds well, and isn't shy about setting screens.

RJ can still play. I kinda hoped he couldn't because roster spots and stuff.

Wade's passing will be huge.

Rose is explosive and looks to be in great shape.

Jeff Green summed up Jeff Green in this scrimmage. A couple moments that make you go wow and a couple moments that make you want to see him take a seat.

Crowder's defense will be a whole new element out there.

Shump still has no mental feel for the game. John Holland might actually be preferred by me at this point.

Frye kinda looks done. As in he might be inactive. James Jones.

JR, TT, and Korver were JR, TT and Korver.

Love looks great.

And Perkins didn't show anything that would somehow make it hard to cut him.

Overall, this Shump, Calderon, RJ final roster spot situation isn't going to be a fun one at all.

So do we have to cut Holland’s to make room for wade or is he different because he’s on a 2 way?

Holland is different.

15 regular spots and 2 two-way deals. Two way guys are their own thing and only guys with limited NBA experience can be signed to them.

Right now Calderon, Shump, RJ are 14, 15, 16 in no order.

One of them has to go.

Ah. So probably Calderon unless we can find a taker for Shump.

Edy will never see minutes on a good team, let alone a title hopeful. He's an easy cut.

Jose was fine, but he made D Rose look like 2011 D Rose. It takes a shocking lack of defensive ability to make that happen. I still think you're better off letting him go and keeping RJ (unless you can convince someone to take Shump off your hands for free). RJ can at least get real minutes in important games. Calderon won't.

Rose needs good screeners on the court to penetrate inside. Love and Crowder are not goof screeners so the offense might become stagnant even though we have floor spacers on the floor.

I'd want to see Zizic start if i'm being honest.. guy plays with intensity, sets good screens, and has great positioning on both sides of the floor.

If Zizic starts who comes off the bench? Crowder?

I hope Korver makes it rain like he did in the first 20 seconds of this scrimmage lol.

Sorta overreactions so far by me..

Zizic needs mins.
You don't cut Edy.
Jeff Green will be the most unsung signing this year.
Calderon...looks good?

Realistic

Really like Wade's floor game.

Rose looks to be trying to find his way. Hopefully he gets more confidence in that jump shot. It would really open up the floor for him and others. However, his vision is pretty good.

There's no choice but to cut Edy unless they make him a 2 way, if they can. We're 1 man over and that's not counting Felder or Tavares.

Yep, gotta cut both Edy and Kay, and of the two, I would definitely give Edy the first right of refusal on a Two Way Contract.

If no one else around the league picks up Kay, we can still sign him to a regular G League deal with Canton.

These were my biggest takeaways.

RJ and Calderon clearly both want that last spot. They both looked a lot better than I thought they would. Would be nice to find a way to retain both somehow if we could dump Shumpert.

I’m excited about Zizic also. He is not a stiff, guy has some skills and length. If I’m Lue I’m going to give him some run to see how he does next to the starters.

I could see Tavares getting claimed. He is massive and would be a rotation player if he ever figured it out. Some rebuilding team with an open roster spot would be smart to claim him.

That'd be the risk, but the majority of teams already have full 15 man rosters. Some have 16 like us.

That's why the Cavs will likely wait until the latest possible moment to try and sneak Edy/Kay through(one via a two way deal, one via a regular non exclusive G League deal) unless a 2 for 1 or 3 for 1 trade happens.

Then again, Cavs could be saving that open two way deal for a player they project as being cut from another team. Kay at this point I'm indifferent to. If they can keep him around somehow and continue to work with him, cool. If he ends up with some other team, I have zero issues. Edy, although I think it's only a very small chance, still has a chance to develop into something more useful, so I'd like to see them hold on to him some way.
