2019 Browns Off Season/Roster Discussion

Do Not Sell My Personal Information
Browns actually ran 35.9 pass plays per game last year. Pittsburgh led the league with 43.1.

Improvements on both sides of the ball may lead us to running more offensive plays this year than we did last year. So rather than divvying up 33 passes per game as has been discussed, the number could be around 40 or so.

Truthfully it depends. An improved defense to go with the offense could mean the Browns have a lot of leads late in the game. That would not equate to more passes, it would mean more running plays because they aren't trying to come back all the time.

I don't think they'll be at 40. Kitchens is a former RB coach, he clearly values the position and we have a ton of talent there. If anything, the number might drop.

You could very well end up right @sportscoach, but IMO it would be a mistake.

Beckham is one of the best in the NFL at getting open all over the field against all types of coverage and he has the YAC ability that other guys on the team simply don’t possess.

The guy should be the primary option on the vast majority of passing plays. He’s that good.

I don’t love citing full season stats from last year in this case because half of that was with Hue and Todd in charge.

Under Hue/Todd: 42.5 passes per game

Under Freddie: 33.5 passes per game

Both figures are including sacks.

We also faced tougher opponents in the first half of the season.

My point is that with fewer three and outs, and our defense getting the opponents off the field more quickly, we should be running more offensive plays than last year. Depending how that goes, and depending how Freddie feels about keeping his receivers happy with receptions, we shouldn't assume that we're wedded to that 33.5 passes/game.

I truly hope that we don't pass more, or force targets to individuals in order to "keep receivers happy."

One of the best qualities that Baker showed was his ability to spread the ball around. Combine that with Freddie's playcalling ability and it's one of the biggest reasons our offense took off last year. We need to make sure that adding arguably the most talented WR in the league doesn't slow down that creativity. Spread the ball around, win games, and everyone should be happy. I see no reason to believe that OBJ, Jarvis, or any other receiver wouldn't be happy winning. If that happens, it's a bridge we cross when we get to it.

To be clear, I didn't mean trying to keep receivers happy by directing who gets the ball. I meant not going into an offensive shell and just running the ball when you get leads. More the number of passes than who gets them.

We're in agreement.

Based off Freddie's aggressive playcalling last year (and Monken's history as well), I don't think we'll see much conservative offensive playcalling.

But man... if our worry this year is we're up in too many games and just running out the clock, what a day to be a Browns fan!

I am not saying that he won't be good and/or the primary target, but because the fact of how he draws attention and how Mayfield likes to spread the ball around, as a unit we will be great, but individually as a fantasy football player, I actually don't expect a great year from OBJ or Landry. All will get touches, TDs etc, but with the mix of guys we have, we aren't going to one person, we will hit the open guy/hot hand every game.

Baker was like 63% completion rate last season, (not sure of the splits between Kitchens offense and Haley/Jackson offense, but I would be higher with Kitchens). I actually expect it to be at least 65% if not higher this season with all the tools and weapons he has. IF the OLine can do a decent to solid job, he will have an open guy almost every pass play and solid runs for his RBs since they cannot stack with box with OBJ, Landry on the outside. Mayfield will hit the open guy on those plays, not a specific guy. Won't be great for individual stats, but great for winning and for the next couple seasons, that is really what everyone is looking for/wanting.

I could see OBJ's catches being down, but his fantasy numbers about the same. Spreading the defense out, creating misdirection and confusion, this should be a recipe to open up OBJ's big plays resulting in long yardage and TD's.

The dude is so supremely talented it's ridiculous. There are going to be times that our offense results in OBJ catching a simple slant over the middle and housing it.

Didn’t expect or want him back here but just another small domino leading to the eventual destinations for Suh, Gunter, and possibly McCoy

Do we go out and try to sign McCoy?

Probably not for what he will command. We already have a ton invested in our DL, that said if McCoy comes cheap somehow, sure why not.
