Johnny Manziel: Swan Won't Return His Calls

Do Not Sell My Personal Information

Let's discuss actual football instead of tabloid chick stuff!

BEREA, Ohio (AP) — It's time for football, Johnny.

After months of having his off-field behavior analyzed, scrutinized and criticized, Johnny Manziel will again be the center of attention.

This time, though, it won't be for swigging champagne on an inflatable swan, but during his first NFL training camp as he and Brian Hoyer battle for the Browns' starting quarterback job.

The Hoyer-Manziel showdown will dominate camp until someone is named the winner, and that decision from first-year coach Mike Pettine will not come until the third exhibition game (Aug. 23).

Manziel earned his "Johnny Football" nickname during a stellar career at Texas A&M, where his daring, dazzling scrambles and improvisational skills made him a college star. It's probably not going to be nearly as easy for him at this level.

The Browns drafted Manziel in the first round, selecting him to hopefully end a decade-plus problem at the game's most vital position. It may be only a matter of time before Manziel unseats Hoyer, a career backup who started three games last season before tearing his right knee ligament.

Hoyer enters camp with a slight lead in the starter's competition. It's up to him to keep it.

A lifelong Browns fan, Hoyer, who has full medical clearance, is determined to hold off Manziel. The pressure will be immense as every pass, incompletion, interception and touchdown will be viewed and examined by media members and thousands of fans, who had to register online just to be able to watch practices this summer.

Cleveland fans appear divided over Hoyer, the hometown hero, and Manziel, the fun-loving curiosity.

The Browns, too, will feel some heat — from fans, TV networks, advertisers — to push Manziel along.

Let the duel begin.

Here are some other things to watch as the Browns, who haven't won more than five games since 2007, open a highly anticipated camp:

GORDON GONE?: Pro Bowl wide receiver Josh Gordon's clouded situation has cast a cloud over the Browns' hopes. Gordon, who led the league in yards receiving last season, may be facing an indefinite ban for violating the NFL's substance abuse policy again. The 23-year-old hasn't helped his cause with two recent arrests — one for alleged DUI in North Carolina. If Gordon is done for the season, the Browns may have to drastically alter their offensive scheme, and find some playmakers. Their receiving group is thin.

PETTINE'S PATIENCE: The team's third coach in three years, Pettine, who spent last season as Buffalo's defensive coordinator, is doing all he can to change Cleveland's culture. Pettine has come across as pragmatic, insightful and passionate. Players seem to be buying in, but until the Browns start winning games, all the positive talk is just talk. One of Pettine's early challenges will be managing the hype around the Hoyer-Manziel competition.

RUNNING AMOK: Once they traded running back Trent Richardson last season, the Browns' running game shifted into reverse. Cleveland tied for 27th overall in yards rushing, a sad statistic for a franchise renowned for running backs such as Hall of Famers Jim Brown and Leroy Kelly. New offensive coordinator Kyle Shanahan learned the Xs and Os of a sound running game from his father, Mike, who turned unknown backs into Pro Bowlers in Denver. With a new zone-blocking scheme and Pro Bowlers Joe Thomas and Alex Mack up front, the Browns should open holes for Ben Tate (free agent) and rookie Terrance West.

SACK ATTACK: Pettine wants an aggressive defense, and he's identified DE Jabaal Sheard as a player who could make a major impact this season. Sheard was moved to outside linebacker last season, and while he did an admirable job in coverage, he recorded just 5½ sacks, a career-low. The Browns are expected to turn Sheard loose and Cleveland's defensive front needs more production from Paul Kruger (4½ sacks) and Barkevious Mingo (five sacks). Sheard, too, is in the final year of his contract.

PRIMARY TARGET: Gordon's potential suspension could make things much tougher on Pro Bowl TE Jordan Cameron, who had a breakout season with 80 catches for 917 yards and seven TDs last year. Cameron is in the final year of his contract and would like an extension, but he'll have a tough time matching his '13 stats without Gordon to stretch the field and tie up defenders.

From Vic Carucci:

Norv Turner is ecstatic to have Teddy Bridgewater competing for the Minnesota Vikings’ starting quarterback job.

Turner, who is entering his first season as the Vikings’ offensive coordinator, has told Vikings.com that he is certain the team got a steal when – after trading back into the first round – it was able to select him No. 32 overall.

“I think he probably should’ve gone in the first 10 picks,” Turner said of the former Louisville star, who at one point was projected as the top overall pick of the draft. “He probably should’ve gone at least in the first half of the first round, and then we’re sitting there with an opportunity to get him when we did, it was a bonus to me.”

Although Bridgewater’s stock suffered largely from a poor performance at his Pro Day at Louisville, Turner said the quarterback “can make all the throws he needs to make.”

Johnny vs the playbook, huh?

Mike Pettine: Brian Hoyer to open camp with first team

The starting quarterback job in Cleveland might be Brian Hoyer's to lose.

Browns coach Mike Pettine told Tony Grossi of ESPNCleveland.com on Wednesday that Hoyer, not first-round pick Johnny Manziel, will work primarily with the first team at the start of training camp. Pettine made the decision after meeting with members of his coaching staff.

"Hoyer's the one. He'll be with the ones in the beginning," Pettine said. "We're still going to evaluate Johnny just as we'll evaluate any other player, with his repetitions, so it shouldn't be misconstrued if he's not taking early reps with the ones.

"I think at this point, right now, it's more Johnny versus the playbook than it is versus Brian. I think he's got to make sure that continues. He's well along the path, but that needs to continue. That's a big part for him, to be able to know the play, execute the play, start the right guy in motion at the right time. So I think there's a lot of that first. So he needs to make sure that he doesn't jump ahead and tries to match (Hoyer). It's certainly more him against the playbook."

Pettine said Monday that the Browns wanted to choose their starting quarterback before they reach their third preseason game, an Aug. 23 matchup against the St. Louis Rams. Grossi remarked that it appeared a shorter timetable favored Hoyer.

"Uh, yeah," replied Pettine, "given those circumstances, I'd agree with that statement."

Pettine confirmed that Hoyer will start the first preseason game "if nothing else changes." He wouldn't say if Manziel will start the second preseason game. Pettine revealed the Browns have already added elements to their offense that would get Manziel on the field with Hoyer.

"I think all options are open," Pettine said. "I've seen that work, so I'm not close-minded to that. That's how Colin Kaepernick got his start in the NFL, as a package quarterback. On the other side of the ball, I've seen that give defenses some trouble."

The Browns' talk on Hoyer is no longer lip service. He appears to have a legitimate shot to keep his job. The real question might up being for how long.

I don't really find this to be news. Manziel ran a very simplistic offense at TAMU. Shanahan will have the full WCO terminology; full Spyder2 Y Banana X Cross Double Under Sluggo type stuff. I don't care who you are, that's going to be difficult to get your head around.

Yes, that will be difficult. But what, it is your job to workout, go to practice and literally just study the playbook. He better have that memorized.

Maybe they can do one thing different with Manziel. Since he is on curfew, maybe they can bring in his girlfriend before lock down to do the ol' Billy Madison trick.

But even then, if you're intelligent and have a basic knowledge of a football playbook, the hardest part will be memorizing formations... route structures typically are the same/carry over... a sluggo is a sluggo, double under is 3 and 5 yard crossing drags, etc. If you devote yourself to the playbook, you can get enough of a grasp of it to earn a starting job as a rookie, they just probably won't be able to open it up 100% until midseason.

Right- my point is it'll take time and that shouldn't surprise anyone that a vet like Hoyer who has played in WCOs before would have a significant leg up coming into camp. It's not really news worthy.

Agreed. Get used to it though, welcome to the age of Johnny Football. Haven't had this type of media coverage in Cleveland. Might as well start getting numb to it now.

I've got full confidence he'll be hitting the books hard, he's just a student of the game and it's pretty obvious.

The good thing about working 6-7 days a week because I didn't take classes this summer is I haven't had time to keep up with the senseless Manziel stuff.

Season start yet?

I wish off field distractions from the media weren't a problem for NFL teams, but they are. Tebow rarely lasts a year on a team because his teammates get sick of answering questions about the backup quarterback. When I heard the comments from Tony Dungy about Micheal Sam and the negative effect he will have on the Rams locker room, I thought about all the Browns facing questions about Manziel. If I were Joe Haden or Karlos Dansby, I'd be wondering when I get to talk about the defense. Once the season starts and Hoyer is putting up unspectacular numbers with a below average receiving group, it's only getting worse.

Its probably better to have a guy with Ray Rice's off season than Johnny Manziel's off season, as crazy as it sounds. At least Rice was good at downplaying his fuck ups.

He is even studying his playbook on his flights to and from Vegas, showing true resolve to learn his craft even when just bein' one of the boys. Refreshing to have a QB so dedicated to his craft.

Think if Manziel did this to a girl instead of drinking/rolling up twenties. It would be an INCREDIBLE news story. If Rice got a season long ban, this whole conversation would not of been brought up. Shit, I even forgot about it until today. If Manziel dragged his hot, buttery girlfriend out of the elevator like a linkin' log, it would be on freaking ESPN, FS1, NBC, ABC, PBS, Food Network, ESPN-8, The Ocho, etc...

It is only a big story b/c of the awful 2-game suspension they laid on him and the outcry of everyone on Twitter. And I completely agree about the defense part of this. We could shut out the Steelers and Saints our 1st two games and the media will still be talking about Manziel.

Can anyone answer exactly what lead to Manziel becoming this superhero/villain type of guy? I don't remember any of this starting because he really wasn't on my radar.

Was this in high school? Mid-way through freshman season? During a bowl game?

When did this hype start and why did he vault ahead of all the other guys who are doing the exact same shit in the eyes of the media?
