BEREA (92.3 The Fan) – Johnny Manziel likes to party.
That won’t change, but how he does it might.
It better if he wants to be the starting quarterback of the Cleveland Browns.
Manziel expressed regret Friday, the day before his first NFL training camp officially begins, about his wild offseason and off the field antics that prompted a meeting with general manager Ray Farmer and head coach Mike Pettine earlier this week.
“For me, my main thing is, people within this building, my teammates, the coaching staff, the higher-ups in this organization we’ve all been on the same page,” Manziel said. “We’ve all been good and very eager to be moving forward.”
The air has been cleared, including the controversy over a picture that appeared on social media of him rolling up a $20 bill in a bathroom earlier this month.
“They’re good with everything and I’ve told them everything that I need to,” Manziel said.
Pettine, who has grown wary of having to answer questions about Manziel’s activities off the field, is looking forward to the focus returning to the field when camp gets underway Saturday morning.
“That’s the best part of training camp, it’s all about football,” Pettine said. “For as much as that’s happened in the offseason – positive and negative – now’s the time for football.”
Pettine declined to comment on his conversations with Manziel, who is competing with Brian Hoyer for the starting quarterback job, but feels that the rookie came to camp prepared.
“He’s very focused and I think that’s shown up,” Pettine said.
When Manziel took questions from reporters, very few of them were about football as he defended his social life.
“I don’t think there’s anything wrong with me going out and having a nightlife and having a social life,”
Manziel said. “I am 21 years old, and I do like going out. It was the offseason, free time for us and if I want to go out and hang out with my friends or go to night clubs and things like that then I think that’s within my rights to be doing that.”
Leading up to the draft Manziel said that he was working to get away from the “Johnny Football” persona and reputation that he built at Texas A&M. Since the Browns traded up and selected him No. 22 overall he’s lived up to that rock star reputation as pictures of him with champagne or with fans and celebrities have been commonplace on social media.
“I made rookie mistakes,” Manziel said. “There’s some things I wish I could go back and done a little differently, but continue to move forward and try to represent this organization and this team in a positive manner and a positive light.”
Now that training cap has started it’s expected that Manziel’s partying days are on hold as he and the rest of the Browns prepare for the upcoming season.
“It’s football 24/7. It’s what I live for and it’s what my job is,” Manziel said.
He also doesn’t feel his busy offseason will affect his chances of winning the job from Hoyer.
“I don’t believe so,” he said. “I think there are definitely things moving forward to help better act as a professional. At the same time, I’m still learning how to do that. I’m still getting used to this role, still getting used to this league, still getting used to being a pro football player.
“I’m not in college anymore. There’s things I need to do better, and that’s just part of being a professional. Hopefully with time and going through this season and as time goes on, I’ll get better at doing that.”
Manziel enters camp as the No. 2 quarterback behind Hoyer and it’s been made very clear to him that he will have to earn his way onto the field if he hopes to start this fall.
“Coach Pettine and the staff here has called it an open competition and I believe that it is,” Manziel said. “I’m just trying to get in here everyday and be better – as a teammate, a player and really hone in on my craft to try and make this football team as good as it possibly can.
“Whatever my role is, that will be decided in the next few weeks. At the end of the day what I want is what’s best for this team and best for this organization moving forward because this is about the Cleveland Browns. This is not about me.”
It sounds like the Browns had a little sit down with Manziel prior to camp. The message was, yea you can have fun but you can't be showing up on TMZ every weekend looking like a buffoon. As a QB he is held to a higher standard than other players and he has to accept that. Hopefully he does.
