#77, Duke Johnson, RB, Miami

Do Not Sell My Personal Information
The front office has seemed less than impressed with his attitude, and I don't think its gotten better.

With the amount of team captains/co-captains, you can bet that the Browns are addressing the character issue with purpose. I've read that T-West has been a douche and came back this season as a douche too. He's either going to figure out how to not be Willie Beamon, or he's going to be headed to another City.

How much better will this year's 3 headed RB get along vs. last year's 3 headed running back? I thought this team was running the ball a ton last year before Mack went down- wonder if they can juggle these three all year and keep them at least competing.

You just have to follow his Instagram to realize how immature and douchey he is.

Last year the receivers might have been worse than a high school team when it came to blocking in the run game. Bowe and Hartline are both plus blockers who will actually take their man out of the play. That alone should help.

The Browns have never had a RB who was a receiving weapon like Johnson, or at least none that most of us would have seen.

This guy has great hands and when he is in space, it's game over. His jump cuts are just awesome. He finishes every run he has too.

This guy is a stupendous talent. I have no idea why he dropped into the 3rd round. Durability may be a little bit of an issue since he got a little of minor bumps and bruises and his ball security is a little bit of an issue. That being said, one is fixable and the other...well he looked damn good playing through injuries last year.

Whoever is our QB next year will have a lot of weapons on their downs, especially 3rd and short. Johnson, Bowe, Hartline and Hawkins can all move the chains really well.

Farmer compared Johnson to Gio Bernard. Bernard really struggled last year as the featured back and Jeremy Hill finished the year strong in that role. Bernard did well in a complementary role.

The Browns should bring in another big back to compete with Crowell and West.

They did bring in another back to compete with Crowell and West, it was Johnson.

I thought that was pretty clear...

Their games are different though. After the draft Farmer compared Johnson to Giovani Bernard.
Bernard - 5'9, 208
Johnson - 5'9, 207

Jeremy Hill - 6'1, 238
Crowell - 5'11, 225
West - 5'11, 223

Bernard dealt with injuries as the featured back last year. Duke Johnson has a history of injury problems.

Rotoworld sums up Bernard's season more succinctly than I can:

Giovani Bernard improved his YPC average to 4.7 and compiled 125 yards on 15 catches in the Bengals' final three games.
Bernard became far more effective when utilized as a supporting-cast member behind Jeremy Hill after struggling as the Bengals' early-season feature back. The Cincinnati Enquirer writes that the Bengals envision Gio as an "explosive, multi-dimensional player" who will fill a "complementary" role.

Rookie running backs and wide receivers are known for hitting the "rookie wall."

If the Browns plan is to ride Duke Johnson all year, it is probably not going to be sustainable.

The Browns ought to stick to using Johnson as a third down/passing down back, especially his first year in the league. In that case, it would be good for the Browns to bring someone in to compete with Crowell and West for featured back duties.

I don't see why anyone would think the Browns plan is to ride a rookie running back.

So I'm still not exactly sure what your point is.
The Browns should bring in another back, preferably big, to compete with Crowell and West for the carries Johnson doesn't get.

While they may not be tall, both Crow and T-west are solidly built. They can be the main back, or at least split main back duties with the other.

No point in bringing in a third guy.

Duke Johnson plays as a return guy (which the Browns absolutely need) and a guy who can change the pace of the rushing attack. He'll have an opportunity to change the game in many ways and the other two RB will still have a chance to assert themselves as the other main cog. Being salty about this pick is picky.
