Brendan Haywood's Trade Exception

Do Not Sell My Personal Information
Re: Brendan Haywood Traded to Cleveland

Sadly, we don't even know what we have in Karasev because Mike Brown refuses to play rookies.

Yet he played Delly a ton...

I just don't think Karasev was mentally or physically ready last year. Really think he can emerge as a consistent rotation guy this year though.

If we keep him, he would take up one of the 15 roster spots. So, that would be the cost of hanging on to his contract. Plenty of teams have found ways to ask or tell players (Bynum, Royce White, players recovering from injury) to spend time on their own. If he's healthy enough to practice, they could probably use him for that purpose if not more.

The only thing I'm worried about is his influence on our players. Haywood doesn't particularly seem like a strong locker room guy. And I wonder if he'll become a malcontent if he doesn't receive enough (or any) playing time.

EDIT: Although I see he didn't play at all last year. Is he injured? That actually may be the best outcome for us. :chuckles:

Just a guess, but maybe this contract could be like Wally Szerbiak's. That contract was potentially valuable even after Wally retired.

Haywood probably could play this year...I mean he isn't that awful if he's not injured (which he just sat out the season and is cleared to return to on court activities). He could be a decent 5-10 minutes per game of rim protection.

Re: Brendan Haywood Traded to Cleveland

Had no idea he still played basketball.

I saw Brenda at Earthfare here in Ballantyne, he had his full Bobcats jersey on in the store with the head band and everything, lol.

I guess it's old news now, but here is Lloyd's take on the trade and contract:

Cavs trade Alonzo Gee for Stanford’s Dwight Powell and Hornets’ Brendan Haywood

INDEPENDENCE: It’s not often a trade made in the middle of the second round of the NBA Draft can fetch a star, but the Cavaliers are hopeful a small-term investment could pay off with a big future contract.

The Cavs acquired Stanford senior Dwight Powell, the 45th pick Thursday night, and veteran center Brendan Haywood from the Charlotte Hornets in exchange for Alonzo Gee.

Gee has a $3 million nonguaranteed contract for next season and can be waived at no cost to the Hornets, while the Cavs wanted Haywood’s future contract.

They’re on the hook for $2.2 million for a center who missed all of last season with a stress fracture in his left foot, but they’ll also have his mammoth $10.5 million nonguaranteed contract for the 2015-16 season to dangle in a trade.

The monstrous contract will essentially create a trade exception for the Cavs to use next summer. Regardless of where they stand against the cap, they can trade Haywood to a team looking to shed salary and that team will be able to release Haywood without paying him a dime.

Haywood, incidentally, was drafted by the Cavaliers 20th overall in 2001 and traded to the Orlando Magic in exchange for Michael Doleac. Haywood signed a six-year, $52 million deal with the Dallas Mavericks in 2010 and was subsequently waived under the amnesty provision in 2012. He was claimed by the Hornets for a little more than $6 million, which was divided over the remaining guaranteed years on his deal.

That’s how the Cavs are able to pay him $2 million for next season and have a $10.5 million trade bullet to fire next summer.

Haywood, 34, last played during the 2012-13 season for the Hornets, appearing in 61 games (17 starts) and averaging 3.5 points and 4.8 rebounds.

In Powell, the Cavs get a first team All-Pac 12 player who averaged 14 points and 6.9 rebounds as a senior for the Cardinal. He was named the Pac-12’s Most Improved Player of the Year after leading the team in scoring with 14.9 points as a junior.

The 6-foot-11, 240-pound Powell was also the Pac 12’s Scholar Athlete of the Year and joins Tristan Thompson, Anthony Bennett and Andrew Wiggins as Canadian natives on the Cavs.

10 million will definitely get us SOMETHING good. I can name a few teams right now that would fight each other to the death for 10 million in cap space. This deal also got us a look at Powell who may end up being the perfect big for Blatt....or he may end up being a pile of shit....whatever the deal is in my mind Alonzoo Gee for 10 million in cap space......cant beat it

This is a potentially great move by Griff & the Cavaliers staff. I love forward-thinking, out of the box moves, like this. Same goes with the signing of Scotty Hopson to that non-guaranteed contract at the end of the 2013-14 season. Only time will tell, but Haywood's contract could net us a nice player and/or draft pick. We'll have to keep him on the roster despite his injury issues.

The Cavs win this trade simply by virtue of getting rid of Alonzo Gee.

This sends another signal that our owner is willing to spend and do whatever it takes.

Baron Davis contract
Memphis salary dump
Firing Mike Brown to correct a mistake
Haywood contract
Scotty Hopson contract

Repeater tax looming in Miami. Aging team. Few future assets. Owner unwilling to spend. Wife doesn't like it there. National villain. Have to talk to Bosh each day. What is to like?

This trade is to be completed without Gee.

Unless we pick up a legit center soon, this guy may actually be seeing real minutes for us this year.

Any word on his foot, and more importantly, if he has been working out?
