Brendan Haywood's Trade Exception

Do Not Sell My Personal Information
On top of my wishing list of players seeming spendable, for the biggest TPE (just don't think Jefferson is sufficient insurance at bench
wing):

G.Henderson $6M Blazers
A.Anderson. $4M Wizards
J.Dudley. $4.3M. Wizards

Of them I think Henderson should be our main target, for whom I would rather use the 2018 1st round pick.

I'm sure Portland would be willing to trade Henderson, but the Cavs would really only need him if they don't re-sign Smith or if they experience a significant backcourt injury, since he is pretty much just a SG. I agree he is a guy to watch. But trading the 2018 pick is tough because without it the Cavs' remaining trade assets are virtually nil.

Unless they experience an unexpected collapse, I don't see why the Wizards would trade Dudley or Anderson, whom they view as key bench guys. Plus Dudley is hurt right now.

Thanks for your comments. Well in my point Henderson can be a decent get for backup SF. He played 18% of his time on SF last season, and the production at that position was decent although not as good as SG. His production on SF is between MKG and Lance, outperforming the opponents in PER:

Surprisingly, he played good clutch time. But Henderson is not a typical wing player because he cannot shoot at wing (arc) but rather at corners, so in some plays we used much often like Horns, he'll not be a right person to set pick for our guard.

This is also one thing I'm struggled with. Frankly speaking I think Henderson is good but not that much comparing to the 1st round, considering his potential role. But despite the 1st round, the only trade assets we remain are right to Osman, and 2019 2nd round pick (lesser of Lakers' and Timberwolves'), which I believe will not be even close to potential bidders.

Good thing is that right after drafts in 2016 summer, when we probably have sent out our 2016 1st round to Celtics, our 2020 1st round pick (with protection) becomes tradeable even if we have spent our 2018 one this season, making us another trading asset in the future. (Reason that we cannot do that in this season is because our 2018 pick can be realized as late as 2020 at this point, due to the uncertainty on 2016 pick which is protected, so 7 year rule prevents us from sending out 2020 pick at this point).

Unless they experience an unexpected collapse, I don't see why the Wizards would trade Dudley or Anderson, whom they view as key bench guys. Plus Dudley is hurt right now.

Reason that I think either Dudley or Anderson could be spendable is that Wizards have too much depth at wings. Porter, Dudley, Oubre, Beal, Neal, Anderson. One or two of them will struggle for playing time eventually as I believe. Then in the coming summer as they need to set aside space to attract Durant, at least early bird/non-bird right for one of them will be given up. But after all, I agree that all depends on the ranking of Wizards at that point.

During the season, can almost guarantee that no top 8 team in either conference will give us a player we can use in the playoffs that year for just the trade exception and a future pick. Its not even about the value, just that no team that expects to make the playoffs is going to hand the Cavs, Spurs, Warriors, Clippers, Rockets, Grizz, Heat, or Bulls(or really any other team expected to make the playoffs) a player for just an exception and pick.

So look to the Lakers, Nuggets, Blazers, Magic, TWolves, 76ers, Pistons from the get go as teams willing to trade just to dump a contract for a pick. As the season goes on teams like the Suns, Knicks, Kings, Mavs, Hornets, and Celtics could get added to that list, depending on how their playoff prospects are faring.

Next offseason though, everyone will be game again, as teams will be jostling to create space to create maximum space in the event one of the top FA's targets selects them.

But as many will rightly tell you, the TPEs are no guarantee we'll find a match that leads to a trade, only an opportunity to be resourceful if things align in the right way at the right time(like they did midseason for us with New York/OKC and again with Denver)

Dudley isn't going to be available.

I'm not into paying all this money and definitely wouldn't give up a first for any of those guys unless we sustain a major injury on the wing(if Shumpert goes down for a long time and Jefferson is terrible, maybe you look into it).

The exception is injury insurance during the season and trade bait during the draft/first few weeks of 2016 Free Agency. Our team is built to win a title, there's no reason to add more people whom we don't have many minutes for to complicate things. Let the chemistry from last-season blossom with continuity, and keep the exception next to the fire extinguisher in-case-of-emergency.

The best case scenario for the season is that we have no need to use the exception during the season because we win 65 games and slaughter everybody and don't have any terrible injuries to key players.
