Carrick Felix traded to Jazz for Lucas, Murphy, and Thomas

Do Not Sell My Personal Information
Gravedigging, but it's worth noting that on Monday(9/22) Malcolm Thomas becomes eligible to be aggregated/included in trades with other players on the Cavs roster. So all three Jazz guys can be packaged for a player. Powell and Harris are both eligible as well now I think. Not sure when Alex Kirk and Chris Crawford become eligible to be traded(or if they ever had any restrictions on them to begin with)

Bottom line, with a little over a week to go before training camp begins, we may see some movement to add another player to the roster making up to the $5-6 million dollar range. Not sure they'll be a player of decent value out there, but they may just decide to turn the Utah contracts into a vet on an expiring contract who could have value at the trade deadline.

Also keep in mind that in 2011 Miami took a bought out Mike Bibby for the stretch run and the first year of the big 3 in Boston they added a few guys late in the year that were bought out(PJ Brown, Sam Cassell). Not ideal but something to consider as possible to probable after the trade deadline.

Thanks for gravedigging this by the way, I forgot the re-trade eligibility date is fast approaching soon.

I really hope we do something with those unguaranteed contracts...because even though Felix isn't on anyone's radar as a player, I don't want to think we gave him away for nothing.

Thanks MirORich.

So what do we think? Who's on offer that we can facilitate a trade with at this point? Is making a trade going to be the best move for us going forward?

As MoFlo said, almost anyone we get with even decent level previous rotational experience will be a worthwhile move/upgrade overtrying to go all the way to the trade deadline with 3 guys who will never sniff the floor(you don't even want them taking blowout minutes away from Harris, Powell, James, Jones, Delly, etc.)

But the challenge is twofold. Timing and position.

Center is probably the thinnest position in the NBA in terms of quality depth. And usually if you have it, you don't want to give it away. Unless its a problem( see Bynum, Andrew) If we were looking for a backup PF there are just more decent guys out there to grab. So position is working against us.

And timing as well. There will be no point in the season where more teams believe they have a legit shot at a playoff run than today. And even some of the ones that don't internally believe it want to make their fanbases believe it for at least a few months. So their are guys who may be available in Jan/Feb, who just aren't available now.

But still we have two premium things we can offer to a team thats rebuilding, wants to shed a contract, or has what they perceive as a problem play.
1. The Utah guys being non guaranteed. Pure 100% salary relief for those owners that abhor the luxury tax.
2. A premium pick. (Memphis future pick)

So there is still a chance we could grab someone in the next 1-2 weeks.

If we try to do a deal with just the Utah guys and no premium pick a few of the "best we can hope for" might be: ZaZa, JJ Hickson, Joel Anthony
Without a good pick involved, I can't fin many other Center types around the NBA that a team will be willing to give up at this point.

So our best strategy might be to grab one of those guys(preferably someone who has an expiring contract) and wait till January. As reality begins to set in for some teams, there might be better quality guys on the market. At that point, you package an expiring like Anthony + a pick for a better player.

That's just one scenario and there's surely factors I'm not aware of or not considering. But, unless there is someone on the market that the public is not aware of, we need to have realistic expectations of who we'll be able to pick up for the Utah contracts at this time.

Today is the 22nd of September. That means we are 2 months from the Utah's 3 guys trade.
Which also means Malcolm Thomas can now be traded.
I hope we will see today the"master plan" behind this trade...

I though those contracts became fully guaranteed in August?

If not, who is all unguaranteed and how much can we trade for given there 3 contracts?

My understanding was Malcolm Thomas could be traded, just not with any other player, until September 22nd, 2015. I think that is the restriction in place, so very little can be aquired for him.

I remember this tweet:
But those CBA rules are indeed confusing...

To me that sounds like now he can be aggregated in a trade.

He can and you would think a move will be made before the opening night rosters have to be set at 15(although ideally well before that)

How impactful of a guy we can get for these contracts remains to be seen. It might not be much more than Joel Anthony type unless we sweeten the pot with picks/a player with actual value.

I'm so confused with these things. Everyone says something different. What does "at least 60 days"? Is there something that can happen that could increase the time he can be aggregated in a trade? Or is is just 60 days.

Probably a CYO for Lloyd... He probably knows its 60 days to his knowledge, but can't confirm if that is an absolute timeline.

he doesn't have much value in a trade unless he is combined with other players.
