Re: #45: Dwight Powell - F/C - Stanford University (Traded to CLE)

Poor man's Channing Frye. Hopefully, if he develops, he can give you similar production in a few years.

Re: #45: Dwight Powell - F/C - Stanford University (Traded to CLE)

This was my guy.... Thought it would have been a reach to take him in round 1, especially where they were picking--- so didn't want to say anything....but they got him....

Yeah, before the draft I was hoping we'd consider him at 33. He has an impressive skillset and carried the team in March Madness.

Re: #45: Dwight Powell - F/C - Stanford University (Traded to CLE)

and why not. he does however offer "Incredible Athleticism" TM !

I just remember when the Cavs took Justin Harper and everyone thought it was an amazing pick. That was the last we heard of him.

Former NBA coach Eric Musselman knows Dwight Powell well.

That's because Musselman spent the previous two college basketball seasons as the lead assistant coach at Arizona State, while Powell played at Stanford. Both programs are members of the Pac-12 conference.

And Musselman said the second-round pick in the 2014 NBA Draft -- and soon-to-be-member of the Cleveland Cavaliers -- could be a steal.
"(Powell has) an NBA body and he's a very underrated passer," Musselman said.

Powell is 6-foot-11 and was selected by the Charlotte Hornets with the No. 45 overall pick in last week's draft. Sources said he was immediately traded to the Cavs, along with veteran Hornets center Brendan Haywood, for small forward Alonzo Gee.

Powell, 22, averaged 17.3 points and 8.5 rebounds during his senior season. His Stanford team eliminated No. 1 overall pick Andrew Wiggins and Kansas from the NCAA tournament.

"In college, Powell could play small forward, power forward or center," said Musselman, who served stints as head coach of the Golden State Warriors and Sacramento Kings, and is entering his first season as an assistant coach at LSU.

"Powell was a very tough matchup in the Pac-12. You'll be able to put him in an NBA game as rookie."

The Cavs' trade with the Hornets involving Powell, Hayward and Gee cannot be made official until July 10, per NBA rules.

I'm extremely excited about this guy here.

Re: #45: Dwight Powell - F/C - Stanford University (Traded to CLE)

His weaknesses are pretty bizarre no? He disappears and shows apathy? Maybe he is not a work horse due to his natural gifts? I guess there are defensive questions because of weakness in his lower body.

Man he looks like he can shoot and drive better than most NBA 4's. If he is our C in small lineups, or what if we pair him with Zeller or Bennett? That's a lot of shooting and athleticism at every spot. IF Kyrie is the worst athlete on the floor, you are in great shape. Run, Run, Run.

Kyrie is underrated athetically IMO.

this kid better crack the rotation this year. he look's very promising

Re: #45: Dwight Powell - F/C - Stanford University (Traded to CLE)

Something about this year's draft was said by several analysts: first round talent is available in the second round this year. He could be a steal - a center that can play a bit in the paint, draw fouls, and shot 45% from 3PT range when he was a junior.

I wonder if Griffin is thinking about Zeller/Powell splitting time at 5 after Andy is done. I think he will be able to play some minutes this year. Maybe up to about 10 a game. Let Varejao and Zeller each play about 19 and Powell play 10 - give or take, since there will be some minutes at PF for some of those guys.

Re: #45: Dwight Powell - F/C - Stanford University (Traded to CLE)

I'd be shocked if he played any real minutes here this year. He'll likely be a fixture in the Canton Charge starting line up though.

We traded him to Orlando.

A lot of guy like his toughness. It will be interesting to see if we have another guy like Delly drafted late or not at all who can contribute right away.

Most second round picks don't pan out. It's the definition of a crap shoot. If Powell doesn't pan out, it doesn't mean much, really. That's why he didn't get picked until 45.

Why isn't this trade official yet?

Why isn't this trade official yet?

Here is what I got:

http://www.thedraftreview.com/index.php?option=com_content&view=category&id=139&Itemid=123

On Draft night, trades will only be announced by the NBA during the Draft telecast, provided the trade call is completed prior to the end of the Draft. If a trade call is completed after the Draft has concluded, the terms of the trade will subsequently be announced by the teams, as per the usual rule, at a time agreed upon by all teams involved in the trade.

So it has something to do with the trade call completing after the draft telecast was finished. My guess is that it won't become official until 7-10.
