Getting Rid of Cable- What am I missing?

Do Not Sell My Personal Information
I've been using the genesis add on for a while now, but one of the drawbacks is it doesn't have sports. You can get movies that are in theaters and pretty much any big show or movie. There have been a few shows that aren't really on it though.

Unless you live more than 50 miles away to your local TV stations an outdoor antenna really isnt necessary. If you do live more than 50 miles then you can get an outdoor one with 150 mile range for a decent price

If your in the Cleveland area and want to watch pittsburgh TV the 150 mile antenna would probably pull in both stations

How hard is the install on that though? I'm no electrician...

well you need to mount it. and then you can typically just splice it into your existing cable wire

The one i linked uses a box to send low voltage through the cable. no electrical work required.

This post made me feel so old. Never used an antenna?
Haha, not that I can ever remember. My parents may have used one when I was really really young. But as long as I can remember, I/we've never used one.

TVMC/kodi is dropping support for AppleTV.

I would imagine it was at apples suggestion

on a side note
Im disgusted with netgear. Googleplay with chrome was the main promotion.Yet I goto access my Cloud drive and it cant because my chrome is no longer supported. They have made every good channel app out there unaccessible ( nothng to do with technology or the ability of the box and they apparently so hard to work with Crackle dropped their support.. yeah crackle.

Never buy a netgear product that requires software support. All they had to do was fully license for a non propietary Andriod/Googleplay/ Chrome and people would be happy.
Netgear was more concerned about artificially limiting their software so people would upgrade to their newer boxes.. not getting on that wagon train.

I found a site that will let me root myold neo. hopefully i can make my own linux/ ubunto box that will suit my needs.

The slingtv deal is nice but the woman is done with spending money on cable even if its internet cable lol

So it sounds like if I do this I should buy my own Router and Modem.. seems like I can get the best signal strength vs the stock units Time Warner or any of the others provide. Plus I can deduct the cost of 'renting' the equipment from my monthly bill. Obviously there is an upfront cost but any idea what the reduction in cost would be if I provided my own equipment?

Any recommendations for a router and modem?

Also, HD antennas... are there whole house ones I can buy or do I have to buy one for each TV I want to use?

I pay $8/month to rent my TW modem.

That's nearly 100$ a year, and if you keep it another year, $200.

You can buy a modem for less than $50 on ebay or even amazon that is compliant with TWC. TWC has a list on their website - but I'd recommend a DOCSIS 3.0 compliant modem such as Netgear CM400, which you can find used around $50 and new from 65-85$ on ebay/amazon.

Would something like that work for XFINITY?

The Netgear CM400 has the Xfinity and TWC logo on the box.....so I would assume so lol.
NEVER BUY A NETGEAR BOX THEY DONT SUPPORT THEM AND THEY ARTIFICIALLY LIMIT THEM

Im wonderinf if a HDHomerun Device with a PC that has a TV tuner would accomplish allow one to broadcast live tv from a pc media server with only the need of one antenna

I have this modem and love it:

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16825390001&cm_re=sb6141-_-25-390-001-_-Product

Right now Newegg offers it with a free N150 wireless router through the 12th of August for $90, but N150 is kinda meh. I'm using an N300 and am looking to upgrade soon.

Also, Radio Shack has it on sale for $75 and I know Staples will price match them via online chat if you show them this link:

http://comingsoon.radioshack.com/motorola-sb6141-cable-modem/1602632.html

I got them to price match the modem when Radio Shack had it for $50 a couple months back via online chat. Best Buy will probably price match too.

You could wait for a better deal and probably find one, but who knows how long that will take. And yes, absolutely buy your own modem. Whether its this one or another one, you'll save a ton of money in the long run. Will take less than a year to come out ahead.

As far as routers go, I am planning to upgrade mine to wireless AC sometime soon and haven't researched yet, so I have no info for you on that front, sorry.

And a roof mounted antenna can be run through your whole house if you split the signal, but you'd have unsightly wires everywhere if you tried to do that with a window or TV mounted antenna. Technically it can be done though.

How many of you guys actually have tried an antenna?

I'm telling you, I used 2 amped antenas in both Lakewood and Rocky River and I could not get CBS nor Fox.

Then I used the same antena in a high rise in Lakewood and it got them, but barely.

Then I used a regular radio shack antena in Parma and I got both channels....although spotty at times.

From what I hear the signals are coming mostly from the Parma area.

I have a moho 30 mile rage antenna in Raleigh. I love it. Fox and CBS are crystal clear. NBC is a little tougher.
