Johnny Manziel: Swan Won't Return His Calls

Do Not Sell My Personal Information
Russ Wilson won the Super Bowl literally last year and is the closest comparison to Manziel there is in the NFL in terms of body type and play style.

Russ is very cerebral and a baseball player. He knows when to slide and never over extends himself. Johnny can be wreckless, uses his toughness to extend plays and prove something. Russ plays within himself. Johnny plays too cocky, tries to prove everyone wrong and wants to make the hero play...which may be the wrong play.

What makes Russ Wilson cerebral? Because he's well spoken and goes to bed early?

What makes Manziel have a huge ego? Because he parties too much?

This has been talked about so many times but Russ Wilson is an awful comparison to Manziel. They are both short. That's where the similarities end.

Just watch Wilson play, you'll figure it out

I don't know if I'd call him a smart runner. He hasn't needed to learn how to slide or run out of bounds because his athletic ability has made it an unnecessary skill until now. He just has to know he can't take a beating a weekly basis and survive.

Did you miss his 2 yard run where he did run out of bounds? You don't slide when you have an opening to the endzone.

So is it out of the question to turn them into pocket passers who utilize their mobility within the pocket? I would hope not. May be an uphill battle but I'd like to see if we can do that with Manziel.

I wouldn't call it out of the question by any means, but I think what Max is going for is that regardless of what the Browns do, he sees Manziel as a guy who cannot resist to run a lot of the time. Can the Browns take steps towards molding him into what they want? Sure. It's more on Johnny to adjust his instincts, though. That's proven to be extremely difficult, hence the disbelief in non-Browns fans. Also, I think it'd be wise for the Browns to do everything they can to keep Shanny for at least another year.

Personally, I'm thinking we'll smack our foreheads more often with Johnny in, but that doesn't mean I won't root for him.

Hardly.

They both have huge hands, both have elite mobility to evade pressure and extend plays, and both excel at throwing on the run rolling out to both sides of the field. If you've got a better comparison I'd love to hear it, but it's obvious the Browns will mimic how Seattle used Russell Wilson his first couple years.

Expect to see a lot more read option moving forward, which could spark the running game. Crowell had his worst game of the year yesterday (17 carries, 29 yards), I'd like to see something closer to a 50/50 split with Terrance West next to Manziel.

Their play style is really nothing alike...

It's a brutally bad comparison, honestly.

Did you miss his entire college career?

Jeff Garcia

Manziel has a stronger arm and is going to be a much bigger threat on the ground than Garcia ever was in his 30s. That's why I still like the Russell Wilson comparison better.

Garcia never averaged 30 rushing yards a game in his career, whereas Russell Wilson averaged 32.1 yards his first two seasons before exploding for 56.6 yards a game this year. Him and Garcia are worlds apart as rushing threats, and I think Johnny is every bit the runner Russell Wilson is.

We disagree on how strong his arm is compared to Garcia, but how could you possibly make this call about his running ability when Manziel is 8 years away from his 30s?

Garcia was never asked to run, but we know he could. Being in the west coast offense they took that part away from his game because the WCO is predicated on short passing.

The NFL game has changed since Garcia's time, but in terms of skill set and style of play you're not going to find a better comparison.

Wilson is far more polished and has a much stronger arm than Manziel had coming out. He already knew how to win from the pocket and play within an offensive system, read defenses, etc.

Almost unfair to expect Manziel to do that, given his college offense and skill-set.

I am going to enjoy not watching Hoyer underthrow, throw behind, and hang recievers out to dry. I have no confidence in him. I don't know if Manziel will be better, but I want to find out one way or the other. I like the Garcia comparison. I think Johnny has the arm to succeed, we will see if he can get through his progressions and learn to slide. That is what worries me most. This has been almost perfect letting him sit and watch for 12 games. Now get him two at home in the friendly confines before hitting the road. Get him another weapon in the draft and keep building that defense.

I like the Garcia comparison.

I don't think it was meant to be a compliment...

I can make that call because Jeff Garcia wasn't a major threat on the ground for the majority of his NFL career. Blame it on the era or his age, but he was never as dynamic a runner in the NFL than Manziel is right now. The Garcia comparison falls short in that regard, it's not nearly as perfect as you're claiming.

I'll agree Manziel needs to keep improving his game from the pocket, that's obviously going to be critical in his development as a pro. I'm not expecting him to have the same immediate success Wilson did, but if we can get even 75% of what Wilson gave the Seahawks as a rookie this team will still compete for the final playoff spot.
