Marreese Speights Has a Player Option

Do Not Sell My Personal Information
Re: Welcome Marreese Speights

Trade Varejao for cap space and give that type of contract to Speights. Problem solved. :D

I wouldn't be comfortable at all giving that kind of money to Speights, especially not on a multi-year deal.

Re: Welcome Marreese Speights

This trade has given me the same feeling that I had after the B. Davis trade. He brought a different attitude and helped change the chemistry in a good way.

Re: Welcome Marreese Speights

It would just really suck to lose the guy. 6-2 since we got him, and we really are looking like a bottom seed quality playoff team. I just see a lot of growth, and belief in the team ever since he and Ellington came a board.

Remember, the Cavs really need to make that playoff push next year for numerous reasons. Hopefully another really solid draft, and we're on our way. They got a pretty nice young nucleus of players. Guys just need to develop at this point.

Difference is Davis was clearly on the way down, and Speights is in the prime of his career. I understand they can't overpay the guy or anything. But the way the CBA is, and how stingy the market is going to be. Still very confident we can work something out within reason.

By the way, just curious, if anyone has a list of teams that have cap space next season.

Re: Welcome Marreese Speights

The more I see, the more I like as the 3rd big. However, we cannot have him, TT, Andy, Zeller and a draft pick. There is not enough minutes to go around, especially if the Oden talks are legitimate. Id like for Andy to be the odd man out, but that is unlikely.

Sadly he will be moved. In 2014 we are at $32 mil without any additional signings or draft picks. So for the Lebron conspirators, that wont work.

Re: Welcome Marreese Speights

Front loading Speights is a great, great idea. Hope its possible.

Re: Welcome Marreese Speights

Zeller can go to the bench. Andy and oden won't make it to the all star break, so there'll be plenty of minutes.

Atlanta, Charlotte, Dallas, Detroit, Houston. Indiana, Bucks, minnesota, New Orleans, Orlando,Philadelphia, Phoenix, portland, Sacremento, San antonio, Utah,

now of some of these teams would have to let other guys go to keep their space but the idea is that if a team wants to go after speights there are alot of teams that can clear cap space to sign him. including Memphis.

Re: Welcome Marreese Speights

So we're going to keep Zeller and trade Speights, hate this idea to be honest...

Speights is in his 4th year, Tyler has played 45 games. How do you know what Zeller will be in 3 and a half years?

uh you do know that accounts for 10 players on the roster including 4 million for speights. thats 38 million of spending money at the Cavs disposal.

heck if the cavs cant give Speights a 5 year 6 million deal and throw him a 5 million sign in bonus the Cvas potenailly have a perennial front runner for the sixth man of the year award and have signed through Irving and thompson 2nd contract with plenty of cushion.

Obviously Zeller is a rookie, but at this point the team would be way better off cutting his minutes. He could benefit from some time sitting and watching Speights, TT, and AV. If we add a draft pick at C, the ideal move is likely to keep AV around to let Noel/Len and Zeller develop at a slower pace and then move AV down the road if the opportunity presents itself (or if he remains healthy), preferably for a starting caliber SF if possible.

Oden is a complete shot in the dark, too. I don't get why people are suddenly assuming this guy is going to be able to play at all. The reason he's going to get a contract is because he's 7 feet tall and at one point was the #1 pick. He could literally have the shittiest workout you have ever seen, but someone will take a flyer on him to be the last big on the bench on the off chance he might be able to play. If Oden was a 6-7 SF coming off of his third micro-fracture surgery, I don't know if any GM takes a call or even picks up the phone.

Re: Welcome Marreese Speights

My eyeballs tell me that Speights can help this team wins lots of games in the next few seasons, sadly, I don't feel this way about Zeller and the only way he is going to improve in my opinion is by adding a lot of muscle which he may not be able to do. He got shoved around by Vucevic tonight (who is a quality center though)...

Re: Welcome Marreese Speights

The way I see it, if we get Oden we have a 7 footer, and I don't know if TZ will be as good as Mo is in 2 years, remember they are only 2 years apart. I be we could snag something good for TZ, and carry on with a big rotation of Andy/Oden and TT/Speights.

Teams are allowed to offer the players they sign a bonus worth as much as 15% of the total compensation1 (the total compensation includes the signing bonus itself, but excludes any incentive compensation). A signing bonus is paid up-front, but it is charged to the salary cap across the guaranteed seasons in the contract (not including option years or years following an ETO), in proportion to the percentage of salary in each of those seasons that is guaranteed. This can create a problem when a player is signed to the maximum salary or the team's room under the salary cap or an exception. For instance, if the Non-Taxpayer Mid-Level exception is $5 million, then a team could sign a player to a four-year contract with 4.5% raises (without a signing bonus) as follows

you also can't significantly front load a contract, as a non bird free agent, the maximum it could decrease from year to year is 4.5%.
