Marreese Speights Has a Player Option

Do Not Sell My Personal Information
Re: Welcome Marreese Speights

Speights said he wants to be a Cav, his play as of late proves this as he is making himself untradeable.

Really? Or is he living off his first few games, when he was emotionally charged? Because his overall numbers, and his play of late, hasn't had me thinking anything along the lines of "untradeable."

Untradeable because nobody would want someone who chucks like him. Not because he's good.....

Meh. Teams that are interested in trading for a player will look at body of work, particularly this entire season, not just the past few games. Players go into ruts all the time. The fact is that, for most of his career, Speights has been a solid offensive bench big who plays with reasonable efficiency. He's sucked the past few games, but that's a very small sample size.

Re: Welcome Marreese Speights

Even when he was rolling early, his shot selection didn't look it could hold up to sustained efficiency.

He also seems to pout and lose a play when he doesn't get a call on the offensive end.

Not a bad bench player, but not worth much more than his current $$$.

He's shot exactly 42.9% here. He shot exactly 42.9% in MEM this year. He shot exactly 42.9% in MEM all of last season. He shot .453 the year before. He's been a dumbass on D his entire career. Whatever efficiency you are seeing is more myth than substance.

Re: Welcome Marreese Speights

And the landscape of the new NBA has taken its next evolutionary step.

We might be able to keep the guy for a non-ridiculous price.

Maybe that's what the front office was thinking. If they can't get a good value for him in the trade market, then maybe the bidding won't be too high in the summer. I've still got concerns about his shot selection, defense, and locker room attitude, but what do I know? I've never worked with the guy and even after bad mouthing him like that, I'd still rather have him instead of JJ Hickson. While both JJ and Mo have some selfish basketball instincts, Mo looks like he at least has some better court awareness and an understanding of the X's and O's

Re: Welcome Marreese Speights

So what's a fair deal for Speights and the Cavs?

3 years, 15 million. With the third year being a player option? Is that too much. Does it take up too much 2014 cap space. Will Speights seek more or similar money but more of a promise to start from another team?

Re: Marreese Speights for the Rest of the Season

Grant not stupid. He would have taken a 1st in the 20-30 range if he thought Speights would walk away at the end of the season.
So he must think he can sign him. Or he is keeping his option open on Speights depending on what Oden does. Or he was holding out for more than a 20-30 1st and got called on the bluff.

not sure which is true.

This administration doesn't seem to be the kind of businessmen that I like to give out player options. They also seem to have a policy of no free agent contracts with guaranteed $$$ after June 2014.

If Speights opts out this summer, I'd expect we'd see a two or three year deal with only one guaranteed year. I don't see the Cavs offering more than $4.5 Mil a year.

Who knows? He might not even opt out.

I'm not sure I'd say that he "got called on the bluff".

Here is what I think happened.

I'd say that Grants team worked the numbers for a dozen different possibilities for where they see Speights in the next 2 years, decided what was the minimum value they needed to make a deal and the maximum amount of salary they were willing to take back to make the deal work. It seems plausible that all of the trades that brought back a draft pick also involved the Cavs taking back worse contracts than Luke Walton. It also looks like the front office didn't want to deal Speights just to deal Speights, so it wasn't worth backing off their positions to accept total crap. Since they couldn't find the right combination today, they decided rolling the dice with deals next summer was the best choice.

I don't think that Oden has a big affect on the Speights situation right now. Oden's a cheap lottery ticket right now, not a real talent asset.

Re: Marreese Speights for the Rest of the Season

didnt any potential Speights trade require his approval?

Only the initial trade to the Cavs since it lost him his bird rights. Had he been traded again, his approval wouldn't have been needed.
