Marreese Speights Has a Player Option

Do Not Sell My Personal Information
Re: Marreese Speights for the Rest of the Season

Speights is Samardo Samuels on steroids. Lazy on defense, wild shot selection, mental lapses. He has considerable talent, but just not a reliable player for the long haul. He'll toss up big stats here and there and crush a lot of bench bigs, but I really hope we aren't thinking of offering anything more than 5 mil or so if we have interest in him beyond this season.

Re: Marreese Speights for the Rest of the Season

The biggest problem for Speights right now is not nearly getting enough touches in the post, which is by his fault... He's much more content and seems to fall in love with his jumper, which is a large part of his consistency issues on offense: he's not a good enough jump-shooter to live by it so he's a very streaky one...

82games last updated their stats on 2/24 but I don't think his shot selection has changed much since then... While I realized he was a high volume jump shooter, I didn't realize 61% of his shots came from there... He only has a eFG% of 37.8%, too...

What's frustrating is that he has the talent and touch to be a good low-post scorer and I would assume his production and consistency would go up if he used it to his advantage...

He's got a little bit of CJ Miles syndrome. Has an idea that the entire offense revolves around him, and whenever he touches the ball, no matter how early in the shot-clock, he's probably shooting it. It's not a good thing to be predictable like that.

He gets his shot blocked more than Tristan...he's a below the rim player. He doesn't have the athleticism or savvy to score down low efficiently. His form on his jumper falls apart at times which leads him to being an inconsistent shooter. I'd rather draft another young PF than re-sign Speights. Ideally I'd like someone who can push Tristan and/or Zeller for playing time with the chance of developing into something more.

Re: Marreese Speights for the Rest of the Season

Speights has never shown a proclivity for post scoring. He's big, so people assume he should play out of the post, but for him to be effective he is a better player facing the basket. It works for the cavs with the guard dominant offense we have. speights' missed jumpers don't hurt that much compared to the value of pulling a big out of the paint, the way he gets to the free throw line, and the cavs pound the offensive boards. I think the holes in his game will keep him from getting paid, but he's still going to get enough to effect our cap window. 5 million is probably right, hopefully no one will give him more.

Re: Marreese Speights for the Rest of the Season

Just something to think about: Varejao coming back and potentially drafting a big high in round 1 next year, makes for 4 rotational big and not much room left for Speights..

So unless Speights doesn't exercise his PO, then I'm not sure the Cavs are going to be keeping him around with what his spot on the roster long-term would likely cost them...

But that brings up the question then: why didn't they trade him this deadline?

That is the mystery. I still can't believe that he is still here. We wasted an asset, even if it was a small one.

The thought that other teams were weary of parting with a first round draft pick for a guy who would be a free agent in a couple months never occurred to either of you? You can't just force a trade on people...

I suspect it also had to do with who they'd have to take back in the trade. That could very well be the real reason for no deal occurring.

Re: Marreese Speights for the Rest of the Season

Speights is an insurance policy if they draft a sf with their lottery pick this year. They will lowball him if they take a C.

The Cavs looked at trading Speights, and from what I've read, they had offers for a very later first round draft pick on the table. My interpretation of Grant's press conference is that the offers that he had required him to take back too much salary that it didn't make sense to do the deal even if they didn't give up Speights. Wasn't that long ago that late first round picks sold for $3Mil in cash.

If Speights doesn't opt out, Cavs will still have opportunities to trade him for a draft pick on draft night or later in the summer. If he does opt out, S&T deals are still a possibility. Maybe the Cavs will be happiest if he just walks so they get more cap space for an even better deal. The Cavs do need to start aiming for a big deal soon.

A lot of stuff can happen between April 20th and October 1st. It's probably too early to start pencilling in next year's front court rotation. I'd wait until at least draft night before making assumptions about what the 2014 front court might look like

Re: Marreese Speights for the Rest of the Season

His attitude at the end of the game was despicable.

Sitting on the bench, pouting like a little child while the team is trying like hell to win the game. That's a loser right there, I don't care about his talent. I hope Byron tears him a new asshole for the way he acted on the bench tonight.

Was that shown on television or from in-person observation? Speights certainly does seem to have huge mood swings when it comes to playing to the crowd and his time on the floor.

Re: Marreese Speights for the Rest of the Season

God, I hate this guy. He'll play his heart out for a new contract, put us just outside of reach of the guy we want in the draft, and then he'll leave. He almost won this game for us with is ridiculous first-half play. 23/8 on 10-14 shooting in 31 minutes. SMDH

Re: Marreese Speights for the Rest of the Season

Should tell you what Scott thinks of speights. Has his best game of the year and Scott benches him at winning time. Scott puts gee and stoudamire. Gee bricks a three and stoudamire goes right by him to lose the game.
