Matthew Dellavedova

Do Not Sell My Personal Information
The primary job of the backup PG is to play 15 or mpg while the starter rests. Delly is capable of running an offense, playing plus defense, and providing intangibles that help the whole team. He also can play as the SG. That all makes him perfect in the backup PG role, because if he had all the skills that people claim he lacks, he'd be a starting PG somewhere else.

But there seems to be this misplaced expectation that the backup is supposed to be able to handle all the PG duties if the starter goes down, and that's ridiculous. The problem in the Finals wasn't that Delly sucked as a backup. It's that we didn't have a third PG to complement Delly.

That's what we should be looking for, not a replacement for Delly.

That seems fine in theory but talent out ways hustle and grit in the NBA when the talented player hustles. The one thing I think most people are missing is Kyrie has yet to prove that he can stay healthy so that leaves us with Delly having to play PG more than your average back up would. I'm saying Delly is more of a third pg than a back up PG. Warriors had Steph Curry , Livingston and Barbosa. Next season we have to find a way to get Kyrie minutes down as well as Lebron's so we will need a back up pg to play a little more than your average back up does.

Delly is great when he's not the primary ball handler. With LeBron and Kyrie healthy, he's fantastic. When one of those guys is injured, he's a train wreck running the offense. I'd go after a Norris Cole/Mo Williams/Jameer Nelson type to use when LeBron or Kyrie is out.

Can't complain about how he played, he has shortcomings, but he plays his tail off on both sides of the ball.

I agree I would sign Norris Cole he has championship pedigree already has a relationship with Lebron and can help the culture plus he is young. What I don't think fans release is that you need to have as much talent and option as possible. We don't need Perkins and Haywood at the end of the bench never playing we need for every player on he active roster to be a threat.

Right on. Just like how playing Andy at C doesn't make him one, the same goes for Delly at PG. He was not the backup PG this year. Lebron was when Kyrie left the game. Delly is a SG in the NBA and we see what happens when we ask him to play PG. He's a good story, but I'd bet we draft the best PG available.

LOL...you say, "We should see him mostly if there is an injury to Kyrie"...I thought thats exactly what happened during the finals...

Norris Cole: has playoff figures of 4.5 points/1.5 assist and 1.2 rebounds per game...this is an improvement on Delly? Seriously??
Who cares what his stats show from playoffs. How about his stats and actual play when he was with Lebron? He did things Delly can't do u know shoot a wide open 3., penetrate without turning the ball over and he can play defense. I see u same guys keep trying to belittle real back up PG that can replace Delly.. Delly is not good and can't handle back up PG when he can't even dribble a ball up the court. Gonna be a bunch of butt hurt ppl in here when the Cavs signs that back up PG for Kyrie this summer.

Also why are ppl putting Delly and SG in the same sentence?

Can someone make a Delly playoffs highlight video with Sarah McLachlin's Angel playing in the background. That would beat exactly how I feel about his run.

So much failure here, I'm comfortable just remembering posters who have been consistently wrong for over 5 years just don't matter. You don't run a franchise, and by missing the point entirely this long, you never will. Toodles.

Delly harassing Curry full court at max effort for 12-15 minutes a game would have been ideal. That is his role in most series. He did his best to play above that when his number was called. I will not fault him for that. Definitely see him with an important role in reserve next year but do also prefer another PG/ballhandler be added that is more of a playmaker and more of an consistent offensive threat.

If we can sign Delly around $3 mill a year, do it. Anything above that, we'd be better served trying to improve at the position. I love the guy and I'm insanely appreciative of what he gave us during this playoff run. However, we need a guy that we can be confident in running the offense for extended stretches or even full games.

Just like LeBron should sit some games out next season, so too should Kyrie. With his injury history, we need to do everything we can to keep him healthy until playoff time. We also have no idea if he'll be 100% ready for the start of the season. I wouldn't be too confident starting the year with Delly as the primary back up.

Explain to me how Delly is a SG when he can't create a shot for himself. Hell how often does he take a mid range shot, let alone make one? He is a PG that can't score. Simple layups are an adventure with this guy. Won't lie, he hustles his butt off. His only true plus.

I think Delly needs to sign with another team.

he's a 3rd pg on the team. that's not a knock on him. you want him on the team but don't want him to play much.

I already explained that in my post. Lebron was the PG while we were on offense. Delly effectively became a spot up SG after we scrapped the offense. I agree about his limitations and hope we upgrade the PG position
