The Dog Thread

Do Not Sell My Personal Information
If you consider a pit bull you will need to check your county and township or city requirements...some do not allow pit bulls, some place taxes and some require additional insurance....fyi
They are very loyal and well trained dogs...its the ones that are not that give the breed a bad name.

If you like the pit but want to avoid the potential headaches..I would agree on the boxer...great dogs, wonderful with kids...just have to make sure you pick out the least high strung one of the litter...will be easier on you in the long run...also just as loyal and compassionate as a pit.

The boxers that I have seen have way too much energy for my tastes. I like Great Pyrenees and Newfoundland, really big lazy dogs. My dads wife's son (refuse to call him step bro) has a couple of boxers and they always tear up my pops yard and generally run a muck.

Pro tip: You have to train them. :chuckles:

its dog dependent.. Morgan is lazy as fuck most of the day. She has spurts of energy where she bounces off the wall for 10 minutes but its not irritating and has no effect on anything im trying to do.

Adoption bump.

After living 28 years and having adopted several cats with family and on my own (still have one, mind you), I finally fulfilled my desire to get a dog. Found this guy at a rescue around Wooster:

That's Zeke, or Fozzie as we've also called him, rubber chicken squeaky toy included. He's about one year old, a sheltie/collie mix, and is extremely smart and respectful, the latter almost to the point of frustration as he's not much of a barker or whiner when it comes to needing to go outside. He pisses like a boy inside and as a girl outside. Don't worry; I'm progressive enough to let him live his life as he wants it. I'll be damned if I dress him up in anything, though.

Man, I've been really wanting to get a dog. At my house in Athens, we have two dogs (one 3 year-old pitbull named Nala, and one Daschund puppy named Blaise). We have a no dog policy at this house, but since I'm the only junior, and the rest of them are graduating, they don't give a fuck.

For future reference, though, what are some of the ways you all got your pups? I am pondering a darker Golden Retriever (which I would name Molson) for my first dog.

I got both of mine from breeders. I originally tried to adopt back in Ohio, but none of the shelters would give me a puppy since I didn't have a fenced-in yard, which to this day I think is about the dumbest requirement I've ever seen to owning a dog. Shitty owners can have fenced in yards just like good owners can live in apartments. It's moronic.

I wanted a puppy, so I found a breeder in Marietta, drove four hours to get there, and picked up Loki, my boxer.

I got Sandor the same way. I probably could have gotten a puppy from a shelter here in Charlotte, as I know many people from my apartment complex have done the same. However, I've always wanted a German Shepherd due to my neighbors having one as a kid that I played with all the time, so I found a nearby breeder and got Sandor for the very good price of $500. He even has champion bloodlines, not that I give a shit as I had him neutered and have no interest in showing dogs. The only thing that indicates to me is that he comes from at least a decent line, and to that end he has been completely healthy for the two and a half years I've owned him.

Really, though, the only big difference between adopting and buying are that, when you buy, you pretty much know what you're getting. You know (more or less) what you adult dog will look like, how much he'll weigh, and probably even how he will act. Adopting is more of a roll of the dice. Nothing wrong with either method. Just don't buy from pet stores or any other place where the dogs might come from puppy mills. Stick with shelters or reputable breeders.
