The Official Game of Thrones [A Song of Ice and Fire] Thread (includes spoilers)

Re: The Official Game of Thrones [A Song of Ice and Fire] Thread

Davos Seaworth is awesome! I love me some Onion Knight. Truth be told, I found him to be somewhat of a replacement for Eddard Stark. Perhaps even Eddard Stark 2.0. Everyone else in the series is so grey, but Davos is as close to "Lawful Good" as you can get, I think, and he isn't nearly as naive or- I daresay- stupid as Eddard was.

You have read all the books, TSS, right? edit: My bad, looks like you said earlier that you are on AFFC.

The series really is a great character study and also just a fascinating story to begin with. Martin sets the world up in a way that there is so much history, backstory, and interwoven plots...I don't know how he keeps track of it all, but it's definitely a world you can get lost in. I have a feeling the last two books are going to be absolutely killer. The story changes so much from AGOT to ADWD, it's crazy. I can't wait to see how he resolves all of the cliffhangers in ADWD.

I'll tell him then:

Albus Dumbledore is gay.

You kind of spoiled yourself by reading that text, even though I didn't say anything specific. :chuckles:

Re: The Official Game of Thrones [A Song of Ice and Fire] Thread

I'm assuming Davos has a bigger part in aSoS. So far he has been forgetable.

ACOK spoiler:

Yeah, except for the gigantic 50 page battle scene where he lost five sons.

That doesn't make him a favorite character of mine. Spoiler in white He knowingly led his ships into a slaughter. As CoK ended his status was unknown.. So I'm assuming he has a bigger part in aSoS. Giving depth to him and his lost kinfolk.

Re: The Official Game of Thrones [A Song of Ice and Fire] Thread

Ive started the first book but Im reading like 5 other books right now so I havent progressed. The other forum I post on is also obsessed with these books and I need to keep reading so I can get into this one.

Knowingly? SPoiler:

I don't recall him "knowing" that Tyrion had planned Blackwater Bay as a mass slaughter ground with wildfire and the giant chain. Not really Davos' fault....

He's not an amazing omgwtfcomplex character, people just like him because he is a genuinely good character and there are only a couple characters like that in the whole series.

But yeah in ASOS he plays a decent role. He's basically our eyes into Stannis' camp so to speak, just as Catelyn is our eyes in Robb's camp.

Ok... I'll hold off judgement on him. I like good character people. So if he's the onion version of Ned I'll probably like him..... Spoiler. Davos was sceptical leading the charge. He talked about the tactic. The size they were taking in and the formation or something. He wanted to send recon but wasn't able. So he had his reservations yet did his duty and led the charge. Not his fault. As you say. But should have stood behind his concerns.. IMO. But it wouldn't be a good story if Tyrions chain rusted in the black water after Davos' recon. Lol. I hope he can live up to your praises of him

Read the prologue and Jamie's chapter.. I read the final 200+ pages of CoK earlier. Lol. Give me a break. I'll read some more tonight

Damn, so you read pretty quick. I won't have to wait 2 years to pick your brain on ASOS.

I read about an hour on my lunch break and work 4 on 3 off... So I should be done in 2 or 3 weeks. If aSoS keeps me interested on my days off.. lots of free time to read.

Re: The Official Game of Thrones [A Song of Ice and Fire] Thread

I seriously went on a binge where I read six-hundred pages to finish book three in like twenty-for hours and haven't really started book four since then. I know the way this series goes... Books take awhile to get started and characters get developed for the mid-game dunk. Only problem is it takes awhile to get there. Been craving it lately though so I will pick up book four in a few days and crawl into a space since I am a binge-reader.

It's great though that we get to hear the views and opinions of someone like Matty before he reads book three. can't wait to see if his opinions change on certain characters after reading book three. My only words for Matty are: strap in and get ready because book three truly is a treat.

cmstophe, I know exactly what you mean about enjoying the in-depth histories and such. My favorite classes in school were English and History, so I really enjoy the back stories on Rhaegar, Aerys and pretty much everything that happened pre-Jon Arryn's death. Mister Martin really gets in-depth with information in his books such as family trees and historical ties with royalty and I find it very stimulating.

When it comes to Davos, I obviously agree with and feel cmstophe has the right view of the situation from book two. However I know that not everyone feels the same way about certain people especially in a novel with individuals with such polarizing character traits.

Another cool dude for the people who are done with book three:

R.I.P. Lord Oberyn Martell... I know that he poisoned The Mountain and he will die from it and that gaping wound he left him, but I was sad to see him go. He was a straight up baller with the ladies, quick with his words, didn't take shit from anyone and stood up for Tyrion against a giant that killed his family? Talk about a good guy right? Too bad the pride comes just before the fall... After that scene with Tyrion in cell he was on my lists of favorites for sure. I am a fan of the "pure" good guys so that why I like Tyrion, Davos, John Snow (obvious and too easy to name before), Jamie (more or less), etc. Really interested to see how that changes after book four!

Re: The Official Game of Thrones [A Song of Ice and Fire] Thread

I think the most intriguing part of the series is, 5 books into a 7 book series, we still aren't sure who the real power players are, or have any real inclination of where the story is going. It's incredible how tight Martin has made his knot. I was talking with my wife last night, and we realized just how many major plot lines we were overlooking because they weren't an integral part of ADWD.

Spoiler response to Cmstophe:

In regards to Jon, I'm assuming he's about to spend a significant amount of time living as a dire wolf before being able to return to his body. I'm curious to see if he'll end up like "Cold hands" or if Melisandre will be able to bring him back in a similar way to Thoros and Catelyn. Presumably, the fact that Jon's soul never "crosses" into another realm will help him from losing as much of his memory and personality, which was a serious issue for both Catelyn and Beric Dondarrion.
The death will seemingly solve two issues:
1. It will nullify Jon's oath to the wall. He pledged to serve the wall until death, and now he's managed to die.
2. I suspect that his return will bring about the personal growth readers keep assuming he's going to make. He's obviously very smart and plans well, but he is still very selfish and a very poor communicator. He has been stubborn, and expects people to follow him without question. I suspect his transformation will be very significant.

Re: The Official Game of Thrones [A Song of Ice and Fire] Thread

Another thing I've almost completely forgotten about and am really curious to see where it goes since its not at all mentioned in book 5:

AFFC Spoiler:

Anxious to hear what is happening with Sam and the Maesters and ahem... Maybe one of the Sandsnakes?
