The Official Game of Thrones [A Song of Ice and Fire] Thread (includes spoilers)

Re: The Official Game of Thrones [A Song of Ice and Fire] Thread

Glad you love it man.

RW hit us all hard. You're not the only one.

As for the ages of the characters, GRRM admits he made them too young. Daenerys is older in the show. Sansa is about the same age though, I think, yet she still looks so hot ... I always feel bad for thinking that but it's true. :chuckles:

Spoilers:

I think you'll struggle with the next two books, but enjoy ASOS while it lasts. The last 1/4th of it is really awesome too. The Red Wedding was insane and as much as it seems GRRM does stuff like that just to be a troll, I don't think that is the case. Ultimately, Robb proved to be an amazing commander on the battlefield but much like his father, he was outmaneuvered in the political arena so badly it made his head spin...literally, in the end. That was his undoing.

Also just FYI, GRRM foreshadowed this in A Clash of Kings. Not sure if you picked up on it but Daenerys in the House of the Undying, she comes into a room of a banquet slaughter, with corpses and limbs everywhere, and at the front of the table a man with the head of a wolf watches her (Robb obviously). Here is the passage:

"Farther on she came upon a feast of corpses. Savagely slaughtered, the feasters lay strewn across overturned chairs and hacked trestle tables, asprawl in pools of congealing blood. Some had lost limbs, even heads. Savaged limbs clutched bloody cups, wooden spoons, roast fowl, heels of bread. On a throne above them sat a dead man with the head of a wolf. He wore an iron crown and held a leg of lamb in one hand as a king might hold a scepter, and his eyes followed Dany with mute appeal."

So got the series for Christmas and I'm 3/4 through A Storm of Swords

Mother fucker

Hahaha. Another RW victim. I watched my wife read that chapter and watch her face turn horrified the further and further she got.

Other than the big twist at the end of GoT, RW was the second time that I literally had to walk away from the book for a few days just to process it.

It was so awesome though. :D

Re: The Official Game of Thrones [A Song of Ice and Fire] Thread

GRRM originally planned on the 7 books spanning something like 30 or 40 years in the timeline, where the Stark children (at least those who survived) would be in their 40s and 50s. The winter season which is starting is supposed to be the longest one in centuries.

Somewhere I read that there would instead be a 20 year gap between the 6th and 7th book, but I'm pretty sure GRRM changed his mind on this as well, and will instead wrap everything up in a 5 year timeline instead. He knew the ending when he started all of this, but the timeline hasn't worked out with what he had intended to do. Supposedly it's one of the biggest reasons there was such a delay with books 4 and 5; he was struggling with whether he should force the story back on track, or just adapt and continue with the direction everything was already moving.

And Quad, I love your insight, keep reading, and pay attention to Petyr. I think it's safe to say we have no idea whether he's a good or bad guy yet. The only really bad guys I can think of are Joffrey and Gregor Clegane.

A certain bastard would like to have a word with you...

Also the 5 year thing you speak of is the 5 year gap. He intended 5 years to pass between books (I think it was between book 4 and book 5?) but it ended up not working out for a variety of reasons. Hence why ADWD took so fucking long.

I just went in here specifically to ridicule people. This is the dorkiest and worst show ever.

Glad I was beat to the punch.

Such a great part.

Re: The Official Game of Thrones [A Song of Ice and Fire] Thread

I loved the first season of the show, and I borrowed all of the books from a friend at work.

Here's a question for those who have read and watched: If I watched the whole first season, am I missing anything super important if I jump into the 2nd book? I've started reading the first book and its great, but I can't help feeling like I just want to get to the 2nd book because I already know what fucking happened. However, I don't want to miss anything important that would make the rest of the books any less enjoyable.

You don't miss much, no. The first season follows the first book very closely. I'd say the biggest thing you will miss out on is the extensive back story of Aerys the Mad King, Robert' Rebellion, Rhaegar Targaryan, the Tower of Joy, and all that stuff. It's explained in the book, and is easy to understand in the text, but not a lot of it is explained in the show. Just a little bit of exposition here and there.

Honestly, it's nothing you can't just Google search if you want to know about it, but if you do so beware: Google searching anything ASOIAF is ultimately just asking to be spoiled. So do so at your own discretion.

Other than that, no. You don't miss much. The only actual story differences I can think of between Season 1 and AGOT are minor things, such as Jaime never dueling Ned Stark. He still confronts Stark, and there is some conflict, but it's at night and in the rain, and they don't fight (Ned is injured by a horse falling on his leg or something, IIRC). I honestly can't think of a single major story difference.

You should probably understand though that in the books the characters are much, much younger to mirror a Medieval-type world/society where there is no such thing as adolescence; you are a child and then you are an adult. Jon and Robb are about 14 at the start. Bran is only 7. Daenerys is 13. You can see how this would cause problems in the TV series, and Martin himself wishes he had made the characters a tad older in the books. So, when you see a reference to Robb being 15 in Clash of Kings or something, don't get confused.

Jamie's age bothers me in the tv series.
