Tristan Thompson

Do Not Sell My Personal Information
It's a bad contract. It was when they signed it, now that money is tied up in a guy who won't see the court when he has his next season ending injury.
That's assuming at his age he even fully recovers from the Achilles, which is a big if.

Okay, but that doesn't change the fact that my entire post was true, and that we are not on the hook for 3 years/38 million.

Another truth is that even if Andy's contract disappeared right now, it wouldn't give us any additional flexibility because we're going to be over the cap and a luxury tax payer regardless. The only thing taking a real hit from Anderson's contract is Dan Gilbert's wallet, and he's still out there most likely re-signing the entire team AND attempting to use Haywood's contract to take on even more money and talent.

That is NOT true. The tax issue issue only concerns attempts to trade FOR the player. Like if we were to entertain the possibility of trading for Lamarcus Aldridge. It does not in any way inhibit our ability to trade away a player such as Mr Thompson.
Damn it. Just when I thought I was getting the hang of the NBA salary cap. :chuckle:

Some posters are funny. We have one of the best rosters and best situations in the league. We just won two games in the Finals with our 2nd and 3rd best player our + no Andy all year.

But yet, if you ventured into every single thread on this board, you could find a post by guys like @chuck0609 with the same negative/player X is overpaid/player Y is injury prone/player Z is leaving/player W is overrated tone as he presented in this thread.

Unless its not a negative tone and some people just think anything short of perfection is complete failure.

Maybe that sounds harsh or like a callout, but go back and read you past 25 basketball related posts and tell me if I'm wrong.

Just think of what Cavsfanatic is like these days.

Because why would it matter to him? He gets paid regardless.

His biggest client wants him to stay.

Rich is also from Cleveland so he has personal reasons as to why he may want Tristan to stay.

It's not as simple as what you are making it out to be.

I think the CAVS have a little more leverage in this situation than is being generally portrayed. They should just sit back and wait for TT to sign an offer sheet with another team. What team is going to sign him knowing that the CAVS will obviously match? The rules have changed since the days of Hot Rod Williams. If there is no deal this summer he can play on the 1 year qualifying deal and then can be a free agent next summer. Is a limited unidimensional players such as TT really going to demand the top dollar in free agency? Maybe but I don't think we should just do whatever Rich Paul tells us to do.

Is it possible to tell TT/Paul to find their best offer (but not sign to an offer sheet), and then we not only match it but raise it by a mill or two per year? Cuz I honestly can't fathom TT getting offered more than like 13-14 mil per season, yet I'd be happy to have the Cavs top that by a little bit (but not offer him the max or close to it). I feel like that would please most parties (TT, Paul, Cavs, Cavs fans).

Problem is no team would offer what they truly thought he was worth if they knew their offer was going to get matched anyway. And it's the worst-kept secret in the NBA that Cavs are going to pay whatever it takes to keep Thompson, whether they want to or not. The risk here is if the Cavs get too cute, Thompson signs his qualifying offer, becomes an unrestricted free agent next summer, and then one team might get desperate and offer something outrageous. Best to lock him up now and deal with the consequences later.

I think Cavs should make a more-than-fair offer to Thompson starting at $14M, over say, four years. Add the extra year if he wants it. Acknowledge that he outplayed any offer the team previously made, and promote harmony by avoiding the market play all together.

After all, he must value playing with 'King', Irving his draft mate and even his mentor 'Wild Thing'. And he seems like a fair minded guy; he must know in his own mind that he is no Kyrie Irving-level max player. Ultimately its his decision, not that of his agent, but Paul can stlll say he got the win for his client.

Who realistically has $17 mil to spend on a Thompson max contract?

For every team that I see, I cant see someone feel comfortable with offering him more than $14 mil. Who would want to make a 10 & 10 guy their highest paid player? If you do that you put your team in a corner and piss off just about every other guy in that locker room. Setting an unrealistic expectation of what everyone should get paid.

But when you're dealing with the luxury tax, he's certainly adding to the total. Obviously hindsight is 100%, but when you going over you don't want to waste money on a guy who isn't playing.
Andy had all the signs of a guy who was/is on his last leg.
But maybe he can make it through next year with significantly reduced minutes and they can get through the contract.

Love your posts chuck.

You guys need to understand something..... LeBron is getting everyone paid on Gilbert's dime.

When LeBron specifically dropped Andy's name in the letter and called him "one of my favorite teammates of all time." Boom. Paid. Damon Jones: paid. Mike Miller: paid. James Jones: paid. James Posey: paid...

With Rich Paul and Tristan's contract, that's just a given that it was going to happen......honestly I'm glad a hardworkin guy like Tristan will be the beneficiary.

Look how much money LeBron just made for Dan Gilbert.

This is all part of the LeBron package; and 31 other teams would sign right up.

LeBron knows how much money this cat wields. He's no Mickey Arison with the cheddar.

If LeBron had it his way, he'd probably want Mark Jackson to be the coach, because he's represented by Rich Paul.

LeBron is going to bypass whatever coach he's playing for anyways.

Don't you think he'd like it if another one of his boys got paid?

Last I heard you can hand cash over to another person so if Bron really wants something I am sure he is involved in the cash amount. This makes Bron getting the most money he can a must. Plus I know a guy who works at the Horseshoe Casino and he basically admitted Gilbert is making a killing.
