Windhorst Radio Show & Updates

Do Not Sell My Personal Information
Not sure if you want to listen. Dude is negative as fuck. Says Spurs wanted to win and cavs sucked.

He didn't say the Cavs sucked.....his main takeaway was "trying to out talent a team 4 out of 7 times is not going to work".

He's looking at the bigger picture, which I think is fine. He said LeBron and KI were just great and maybe if both those guys play that well, you can win a title riding them the entire time. But in the long run, that's not going to work more times than not. Especially against teams with good team defense.

He was most worried about how the Cavs execute on offense, which I think is totally fair. There's sill a lot of questions to be answered on what offensive sets are our bread and butter and what we go to (ISO?) when our offense stagnates and we need big baskets.

I know most people jump down Windy's throat but I think he's 100% correct. Our execution has to improve.

Hey Windy --- 3.13.15 (first half of the show)
http://stationcaster.com/player_skinned.php?s=70&c=18273&f=4126333

01. What Kyrie did against the Spurs was historic.

02. Kyrie got the ultimate respect when the Spurs put Leonard on him to guard him.

03. Most remarkable for Kyrie is that he scored the 57 points on just 32 shots.

04. Kyrie's outing against the Spurs was likely as close to a "perfect game" as any player can have.

05. Spurs were frustrated because they could not guard Kyrie.

06. Cavs offense actually stunk in the Spurs game. Kyrie just did it himself.

07. Spurs really wanted to win the Cavs game.

08. Cavs are 13-1 against the West dating back to January.

09. Cavs won the Spurs game because of missed free throws.

10. Cavs did not handle themselves well as a team in the 4th quarter vs Spurs.

11. Kyrie, LeBron bailed out Cavs in the 4th quarter. Spurs outplayed the Cavs then (in execution).

12. I thought 4th quarter vs Spurs, the Cavs were being out executed and out strategized by the Spurs. This includes David Blatt.

13. In 4th quarter, the game was moving too fast for Blatt and the Cavs. Spurs were better than them.

14. The Cavs were not running offensive plays down the stretch against the Spurs.

15. Cavs played "my turn, your turn" with LeBron, Kyrie down the stretch vs Spurs.

16. Kyrie was just so good, it did not matter that Spurs executed better than Cavs did late.

17. Kyrie's performance is not sustainable over the long haul, against the Spurs (or others).

18. Cavs did not perform well mentally or in execution late in the Spurs game.

19. Blatt wanted Cavs to switch all pick and rolls (on defense) late in Spurs game. This is why Mozgov and Love not playing late against the Spurs. Blatt went with most athletic lineup he could so he could play this defense.

20. Tristan Thompson was great against the Spurs.

21. Cavs switching defense late not effective with like Shumpert guarding Duncan or Jones guarding Duncan. This was not effective. This defensive strategy was going to cost the Cavs the game (with no Love or Mozgov to guard the Spurs bigs). This tactic by Blatt was not prudent, even though it ended up working in the end.

22. Spurs got up by 9 points late because of schematic deficiencies on the part of the Cavs.

23. Spurs were carving Cavs up late on defense, and Blatt still did not substitute or adjust.

24. Spurs winning the game up 9 late in their own building is a 99.7% chance that opponent loses.

25. Cavs lineup on the court late against Spurs also limited the Cavs in terms of offensive options.

26. The play that was drawn up to get Kyrie the final shot in regulation was a good play.

27. I credit the Cavs for a lot of amazing individual plays in the Spurs game. However, the way the Cavs conducted themselves in the 4th quarter against the Spurs did not show a lot of growth from the team (I think he means Blatt here) since like the Rockets game.

28. Host - I agree with pretty much all of your evaluation of the Spurs game.

29. Host - Cavs 4th quarter game management has been an issue for at least a month.

30. Cavs can't rely on great individual performances to carry them in a playoff series for 4 wins.

31. I can see why, in certain situations, you don't have Love on the court late in games. But to also not play Mozgov (seems like a bad strategy).

32. Cavs lineup let Diaw stay on the floor for the Spurs. Spurs are easier to handle when you force Splitter onto the court with Duncan instead.

33. I'm not as focused on the lineups; I'm more focused on showing growth in the execution on the court.

34. I just haven't seen growth in the execution by the Cavs late in games.

35. Houston game was a prime example of poor execution late in a Cavs game.

36. Cavs have more firepower than the Heat did. One reason for this is because Wade always needed screens set for him (and Kyrie does not).

37. Heat with LeBron had same execution issues early on that the Cavs are having now.

38. Heat were able to overcome their execution issues is their first year, until the finals. And then Dallas shut them down.

39. When you have two great scorers, you want to put one inside and one outside.

40. When you have three stars, put one outside and one inside and one at like the elbow.

41. Using Love in the corner rather than at the elbow doesn't seem to make much sense.

42. I would love to see growth, in terms of these schemes. But I did not see it in the Spurs game.

43. This lack of growth will cost the Cavs down the line.

44. Some coaches like to switch on pick and rolls most of the time. Usually it is done in the 4th quarter.

45. Switching on pick and rolls can be most effective way to guard it because the offense then gets no real space from running the play.

46. Switching on pick and rolls not done for long periods of time because it is easy to exploit, with mismatches.

47. Thompson is one of the few bigs in the league who can guard smaller guys on pick and rolls.

48. Kevin Love had some issues guarding Boris Diaw in the Spurs game.

49. The lineup and the strategy (switching on pick and rolls) used by the Cavs late against the Spurs was questionable.

50. LeBron's game is moody. He goes through phases during a season where he decides what he wants to do. And then he will change this approach (like being on the perimeter for awhile, then wanting to post up more in other games).

51. Kyrie is starting to show that big games don't affect him.

52. LeBron is "refreshed" by how good Kyrie is. LeBron likes having players that can actually help him.

As much as I didn't like the switching Tony was killing us early in the game so it seemed like coach tried to make an adjustment and it would have worked perfectly had we gotten that rebound late and not Leonard... But he seems to be right on some things and to contradict himself on other things.... Tony was destroying us early in the game so the made a move and while it wasn't over genius and we should have made another move certainly let's not forget Tony's 1st half either

Show from the 18th:
  • "If you hold David Blatt to everything he says, you will be consistently disappointed"
  • Believes that the Love/Blatt disconnect is because they are covering something up.
  • If he had to guess, thinks Kevin's back is acting up
  • Marion may get some playing time in the rest of the season.
  • Believes Blatt was just doing a "tap in" when he said that the Cavs had to get the second seed. He was making a "non-bold prediction".
  • Miami could give Cleveland trouble if they played 7 games like the last 2 against the Cavs, but doesn't expect that they can. Miami would be a challenge for the Cavs "because of all the emotion in it."
  • Thinks Cavs vs Atlanta would be a hard fought series, but if everyone is healthy, he picks the Cavs in 6.

Today's show:
  • Cavs will be scouting point guards in the draft
  • Predicts the Cavs will play well against the Pacers tonight and in their next game against Miami
  • Cavs have another road trip next week because of NCAA tourney, but should have a gentle April
  • Expects the Cavs to rest guys in April and have time for practices,
  • Playoff seeding disagreement: Lebron knows way more about the NBA playoffs than Blatt. Blatt frequently claims that he's "one of the most experienced coaches in the world", but that means nothing going into his first NBA playoff series. Lebron & Blatt are not always on the same page.
  • Admits that the media likes to scrutinize the coach and try to bring out the disconnects, but that's why the coach gets $3Mil a year
  • "Blatt likes to offer excuses"
  • If Love has a back injury, he might want to hide it if he's coming into a big contract this off season. Thinks it is all very interesting. At some point in the off season, Cavs will need Love to step up. Will he be able to do it?
  • "Mozzie" doesn't play in the 4th because Blatt likes the small lineups and the small lineups have been working. But does it work better than the starting lineup that has been working very well? Will small lineups work in the 4th in the playoffs? Love might also be vital in for offense in the 4th quarter because Iso ball doesn't work as well in the playoffs. We'll see how it turns out.
  • James Jones & Marion won't play as much in the playoffs, won't be in the 8 man rotation
  • Delly will be in the 8 man playoff rotation. "Oh God"
  • Shupert will likely be back because he's restricted. JR will probably opt out, but will probably want $22-$24Mil over 3 years, and might not be a good value on his next contract.
  • Alonzo Morning said that Love is going to LA next year. Windhorst has been hearing the same thing quietly for months from lots of people. Kevin and the Cavs do not say that.
  • Salary cap 101: Brian guarantees that Kevin Love will opt out of his contract for money reasons whether he wants to stay or leave, because he leaves too much money on the table if he doesn't. He may take a 1 year deal to earn an extra $3Mil.
  • p.s. Kevin's girlfriend lives in LA.
  • Bold prediction: Larry Nance Jr. wins in the tourney today
  • Cavs can't sign and trade with Haywood, but can use him before Aug 1 to trade with a team looking to shed salary.

it hasn't exactly been a quiet topic since the 3rd week of the season. How many reports have been out there stating this very thing? Until it comes from Love, his agent, or the Cavs FO, I choose to to ignore any Love to LA talk. Windhorst himself said its difficult to get a read on Love. For anyone to speculate that they KNOW is complete BS.

**edit below is an example of an article from Sheridan Hoops.

SLAM: Where do you think Kevin Love is going to go? LA?
AM:
I think he’s probably going to go to LA. I could see that.
Only James knows what made him decide to leave and it probably wasn’t all simply basketball-related reasons, although there was plenty to think about in that regard as well after getting humiliated by the San Antonio Spurs in the Finals.
What’s more interesting about Mourning’s take is about Love. Where is he getting the information about the power forward from? How does he know that Love is unhappy and that he may be targeting the Los Angeles Lakers in the offseason? It’s easy to speculate, especially the idea that Love may not be happy with a lesser role on the Cavaliers, but those are some really strong statements that Mourning provided.
It sounds like an opinion/assumption more than anything else, but it’s still intriguing to hear such a strong take from Mourning, who isn’t exactly known for making headline-worthy statements. Although there isn’t any official word on Love’s true state of mind, there has to be some truth to the idea that he’s not completely happy with being a distant third option on the team. Mourning is certainly not alone in believing this, so interesting times will surely follow for James, Love and company in Cleveland once the season is over.

If Kevin is anything like his old man Stan or his Uncle Mike, then he'll be douche and split. Those two guys have a history (especially his Uncle) of being jerk'offs. Now, if he's like his grandmother, who was quite a gal, then i guess all is good! ;)

Honestly, it all comes down to what the dude wants in his life. I tend to think we've got him here as long as LBJ is on board.

Windy only knows so much an he i right, Kevin is tough to get a read on. I know one thing, i'm not worried about it. I want guys on the team who want to be a part of something amazing. He is right now...and can choose to be for longer if he wishes.

Cavs have to be prepared either way..and it's not something I will get anxious about.
Lebron left before/came back and only a handful got it right.
If the Cavs get the nod that Love is leaving they have options .
The last time I listened to Windy on the RBS , he sounded like he was angry at the Cavs..and the fans for criticizing his comments.
I saw where the Cavs played less team ball against the Spurs but it appears that whatever team Lebron is on plays less team ball against them.

More or less angry than Blatt gets when he hears "Rookie coach" ? :chuckle:

did Windhorst really throw this in?

Brian said something like this:

"Even if Kevin Love his staying ... and he breaks up with his girlfriend the daughter of a Disney executive who lives in LA and starts dating a Cleveland girl who never wants to leave ... he still opts out of his contract this summer."

Who cares if his girlfriend lives in L.A.? Kevin knows distance is nothing when you make roughly 40x more $$ than the President does.

"Blatt likes to offer excuses"

Is it really an excuse when LeBron is gone for 2 weeks, or the team is playing 4 games in 5 nights multiple times in a short span, or they're on the road for like 20 straight days and getting tired? Those are literally the only "excuses" I have heard Blatt make.
