Tristan Thompson: Initial Thoughts

Do Not Sell My Personal Information
You do realize that the "3" years thing was a rumor started by Toronto. Valanciunas's team said a 1.5 million buyout in January 2012 would do it for them.

Our front office got played, PERIOD!!!

Or was it just a coincidence that Toronto started this rumor saying it would be 3 years to get Jonas and then they drafted him.

It wasn't a rumor, it was what Toronto GM said AFTER they already drafted him, so no need for deception.

But who needs facts when you have caps lock, bold font, and a whole bunch of pent up overreaction?

I doubt any rumors Grant considered came from Toronto, but rather from the horses mouth itself.

The fact of the matter is, there is no signed buyout agreement STILL. There is no sure timetable and agreements like that have a history of blowing up and being delayed. If the Cavs had both Jonas and Thompson rated very closely, I can see the buyout concerns being the final deciding factor.

Also what's underrated about Thompson's offensive game is his ability to simply get to the free throw line relentlessly. Obviously there are concerns about what he does once he's there, but the ability to get to the line usually doesn't go away and raw players with that ability generally are able to use that strength to help along the development of their other areas of need. If Thompson truly can become a passable free throw shooter, his offensive game will be able to expand immensely.

I'm warming up to Thompson, hell I like it. Seems like a nice guy also. Especially if he turns into Skips prediction :)

Wow, Skip Bayless called Tristan a relentless rebounder, defender and great passer and called him a Dennis Rodman without the baggage.

Tristan Thompson relentless off rebounder, defender, terrific passer. Became leader/spokesman for Texas team as freshman. Cornerstone.

In 5 yrs Kyrie will still be best player in this draft. Dangerous for Cavs to go Tristan over Jonas but Tristan will be a Rodman w/o baggage

People keep talking about how drafting Tristan spells the end for JJ. While that may be true, it may be actually spelling the end for Andy V. Sounds like Tristans specialties are a lot of what Andy does.

Just sayin.

I've never seen you before yesterday. I'm kind of glad of that now.

I have been here since 2005 and donated to help keep this site going long before you ever joined.

HOWEVER, I see you have 14,330 posts since June of 2008. That is 13 posts a day! Seriously, you need to find a girlfriend or something because this is your entire life! Maybe get out a little and go to a restaurant, no one will think poorly of you that you are sitting by yourself.

I was thinking something similar. We can only hope! :) I imagine it'd be after this season, though, as Varejao needs to prove his health and worth again to the league.

At the same time, San Antonio ended up using their assets not in an attempt to get Jonas, but to trade up and draft Kawhi Leonard, another guy who recieved a very high rating in Hollinger's draft rater which I'm sure has some similarities to the statistical analysis these teams themselves use in projecting players.
While true, they didn't have nearly the same asking price. The Spurs almost surely would've had to move Parker if they wanted a shot at Jonas (obv little did they know TOR would take him at #5). Making that significant of a move basically ensures their window is closed.

Leonard came at a much cheaper asking price, and even better, wasn't going to be overseas for a year or more.

I'm curious about Hollinger's stats because we all know the limitations of PER - defense. And yet, that's exactly where TT is supposed to currently shine. Basing it off of offensive stats again doesn't take rawness into account, because well, someone had to score and rebound on that team and it happened to be TT. Sorta similar to how JJ put up such great stats post-ASB, someone had to do it.

It'll definitely be interesting to look back on in a few years.

Personal attacks are lame.

How bout those draft picks?

So what about Kyrie's defense? Who cares? If he can't defend then he better start learning.

As far as Baron being old, read my whole post.

Your just ignoring the fact the Irving's defense is still yet to be known about. And Baron IS old.

I've never understood how making fun of someone for posting a lot on a message board by posting on a message board makes any damn sense.

I guess a Rodman comparison never occurred to me. But that is definitely a worthwhile comparison.

I've already noticed similarities between Tristan and Serge Ibaka. He may be a bit smaller and may not have the vertical Ibaka does, but they play similar styles and contribute in many of the same ways.

It's all right, leave him alone. I may not have money to contribute to the site because I've been in college the past four years and struggle just to pay rent :chuckles: but I'd like to think that I've contributed more sound discussion than this guy on at least a couple occasions.

I'm not so insecure as to even bother addressing the rest.
