Tristan Thompson: Initial Thoughts

Do Not Sell My Personal Information
I've warmed up to the Tristan pick as well. I'm not going to bash the guy anymore.

I especially like the fact that he and Irving are friends. That's not the only reason I've warmed up to him, but it certainly helps.

While I feel Tristan had to have been rated in the same tier as JV if not higher for us to risk letting JV fall, it is interesting to note that Tristan is Canadian, and it's the Raptors who took JV. The Raptors seem stocked with PFs, though, and you'd think they'd want to clear some out before dealing for another.

Not trying to pick on you or anything, just wondering what is interesting about it? The Raptors were picking after us and never had the chance to take Tristan.

I just like "U Mad" pictures... :)

I think he was implying that it almost looked like a potential trade scenario (Thompson for JV, maybe with smaller fillers added). You know Toronto loves their non-U.S. players, but they had a chance to even pick up a fellow Canadian on top of that. :chuckles:

I thought this yesterday, and then I was wondering what we could possibly want from TOR.

Ultimately, I think we were hoping TOR would pass on him and we would work out a trade with someone lower like Charlotte. I cant help feeling like we tried to get cute and pick up another first rounder and lost out on the guy we really wanted. Immediately after Toronto picked JV, I was thinking to myself, the only way Toronto does a trade like this with us is if they are getting their hands back on their coveted Eyenga.

Byron Scott saying that TT was higher on their board than Jonas is complete poop and a cover up

Also, I don't look at his LRMR representation as a negative. First of all, Rich Paul is his agent and out of that entire group, Rich Paul may actually be the guy I trust the most not to be a complete idiot, considering he lobbied for LeBron to stay here and was simply defending his friend after the Gilbert letter. Hell, I'd rather negotiate with Rich Paul rather than Leon Rose, easy pickings for someone as business savvy as Gilbert.

What we have to realize whether we like it or not is that their agency will attract and sign a lot of young talent over the years and we are going to have to deal with them. This is an opportunity for both parties to mutually repair their business relationship which will only serve to help the Cavs in the long-run and help us move on from all of the bitterness and nastiness that "The Decision" created so that we can focus on becoming a contender again while secretly fist-bumping each other every time we watch LeBron choke away a playoff series over the next half decade.

According to sports dailey. The cavs had negotiated taking thompson who was wanted by The charlotte hornets. the idea they would take valuncias and make a trade. Instead toronto took Jonas and charlotte got the sacremento deal.

Cavs were outmaneuvered by the Kings and the Raptors.. took a chance and worst case scenario they have tristan who they can still move or keep.

This is bad reporting from the Sports Daily. Chad Ford broke the Kings/Bucks/Bobcats trade details at 4:30pm, three hours before the draft began. Sports Daily makes it sound like Toronto made the Jonas pick, and Charlotte then made the Kings deal.

It is possible that the Cavs and Bobcats talked about such a trade before the draft, but Charlotte made their Kings deal hours before Toronto decided to take Jonas.

Really bad reporting.

Now, it's possible the Cavs/Bobcats were in talks after they nabbed the #7 pick, but that's not what this report says.

On a lighter note.
I absolutely love Haden.

Agreed. Anyone who wants to build a great NBA team without anyone having connections to LRMR or LeBron or Riley or _____ is asking the impossible. Jonas's agent is Leon Rose, so I guess the Cavs couldn't draft him either?

Also, Noonan has pointed this out numerous times, but I feel it needs repeating..

J.J. Hickson is approximately one calendar year away from being a restricted free agent(obviously dependent on what happens with the CBA), guys of his ilk always get overpaid. What do you think Chris Grant's most recent discussion with Hickson's agent was like "Hey Chris, got your message...J.J. and I were thinking we should start at 8.5 million with max escalation for the full guaranteed duration..."

I don't think the team plans on keeping or re-signing Hickson and I don't think they feel he's worth what the monetary number placed on him will be

This has probably been mentioned, but is anyone else concerned with JJ's reaction to this trade?

His motivational issues and laziness in the past were no secret. He was afforded the opportunity to start on a contender and play with the best player in the league, but he didn't do much with it at first. He seemed to break through in the second half of last season, but could essentially drafting his replacement in TT cause him to relapse? I;m not completely sure JJ is the type of guy who will be motivated simply by the competition between him and TT for mins, touches, etc.

On the other hand, it is a contract year, something I'm sure his agent has made quite clear. With JJ, the potential payday may be motivation enough.

Of course this concern could be all for naught if he is traded prior to the season.

I think Grant and Scott's conversation with Hickson will be something along the lines of:

"You're still a valuable piece. We understand that you might not be happy that we drafted Tristan, but if you work hard, play well, and are a good soldier, we'll do our best to get you on a good team. Plus, you're in a contract year. You'd be doing yourself no favors if you went out and pouted and crapped the bed."

Not trying to pick on you or anything, just wondering what is interesting about it? The Raptors were picking after us and never had the chance to take Tristan.

With a board name like "TheCongoKid" you should have caught the (admittedly obscure) point, because you might recall the rumor goes that we took Christian Eyenga with an eye on trading his rights to the Raptors (who as the rumor goes was trying to sneak him in to the 2nd round) to help get us Bosh.

Getting Thompson in Toronto, probably isn't anywhere on the scale for their fan base as it would be if Utah was able to draft Jimmer, but they have more reason than the Jazz to worry about losing fan interest. It's just possible Toronto is interested in Thompson and figures that under the right conditions that JV might be the bait they need to pry him loose from us.

In other words, they might not have been trying to ruin a potential deal we had in the works with the Bobcats, they might have been trying to force their way in to it.

Anyway, that's a lot of speculation and probably means nothing ... but I thought it was interesting to note.
