Tristan Thompson: Initial Thoughts

Do Not Sell My Personal Information
With a board name like "TheCongoKid" you should have caught the (admittedly obscure) point, because you might recall the rumor goes that we took Christian Eyenga with an eye on trading his rights to the Raptors (who as the rumor goes was trying to sneak him in to the 2nd round) to help get us Bosh.

Getting Thompson in Toronto, probably isn't anywhere on the scale for their fan base as it would be if Utah was able to draft Jimmer, but they have more reason than the Jazz to worry about losing fan interest. It's just possible Toronto is interested in Thompson and figures that under the right conditions that JV might be the bait they need to pry him loose from us.

In other words, they might not have been trying to ruin a potential deal we had in the works with the Bobcats, they might have been trying to force their way in to it.

Anyway, that's a lot of speculation and probably means nothing ... but I thought it was interesting to note.

haha...completely forgot about that. Like I said, wasn't trying to be a dick or anything. Just curious.

The dude is for sure a hard worker. Also in this video I noticed he's going to his right hand a lot, using his right hand to dunk, so he seems pretty ambidextrous. Huge plus for me there.

Oh and he can dunk with one hand unlike another lazy PF we have on our roster.

Did anyone see Tristan featured on Sport Science? Talks very highly of his athletic ability.

This guys stats as a freshman are pretty comparable to Lamarcus Aldridge when he played for Texas as a Sophmore. Tristan blocks more shots, and averaged 3 less points in 3 less minutes. Lets all take into consideration that Tristan was a freshman, Big 12 freshman of the year actually. and Lamarcus was a sophmore when he was doing this. Also Lamarcus only shot 60% from the foul line in college. Get the picture?

I was pissed at first but I am starting to warm up to idea of this guy. If V ends up being a bust or a Rubio issue than it will go down as a great pick.

Yeah, the picture seems to be that you've probably never seen LMA actually play.

This is precisely why I dislike when people look at stats and solely stats.

Yeah, the picture seems to be that you've probably never seen LMA actually play.

Yes I have and I know they are 2 completely different players. I was just pointing out the similarities in their times at Texas. They both struggled with free throws. The rudeness you showed was really not needed.

Can we start calling Tristan Thompson "titty"? Two t's, and he's from Texas...which is what he has in common with another Longhorn on our roster who is named after cleavage. It only makes sense.

Hahaha yes.

creativity.

So basically, you admit they are two totally different players, yet point out that their stats were similar as if it matters? I'm not sure I understand. They were both long, athletic bigs that had large roles in their respective systems. As a result, they had a similar number of points, rebounds, blocks, etc.

PJ Tucker averaged 10.4 PPG, 6.8 boards, shot 54% from the field, and 1.41 points per shot in 22.5 MPG during his freshman season.

Thompson averaged 13.1 PPG, 7.8 boards, shot 54% from the field, and 1.5 points per shot in 30.9 MPG during his freshman season.

Should we compare them, too? I didn't mean to come across as overly hostile...but Tristan Thompson and LaMarcus Aldridge only belong in the same sentence because they were forwards who played at Texas. Not because of their stats.

Derrick Williams was a sophomore last year, Tristan Thompson was a Freshman ... but TT is 2 months older?

In a weird way I think I having JJ and all his problems last year really helped the Cavs figure out what they want from their PF. All we heard last year was JJ’s dumb, has no hands, doesn’t block out, has no intangibles, doesn’t play defense, and then people defending him, but he’s producing, he’s young , he ‘s growing as a player, etc.

I really believe JJ’s play led or helped in the Cavs drafting a no bullshit PF in TT. Now if it’s the right decision or not nobody will be able to tell for a few years. Not just what he does but was Jonas does and Biyombo does as well in comparison. But I do like the pick and think it will work out.

I think this board and Cavs fans all over will love watching TT play. All the negatives about JJ on defense, intangibles, blocking out, and basketball IQ are exactly the opposite for TT. That will not be a problem. I guess people will have to find something else to bitch about with TT. Maybe if they expect him to average 20 ppg and he’s only averaging 13, but doing everything else very well, idk.

I think this sets the Cavs up nicely to have Irving and our 2012 pick (probably a wing), being our main scorers. Finding our third scorer will the key, maybe it’s TT, maybe somebody else. Our interior defense should be very good, but I if TT is our PF of the future, we might not be able to count on very much scoring from our bigs, considering it is extremely hard to find a scoring center. But who knows maybe TT defies the odds and becomes a legitimate scoring threat (at least 20 ppg), along with everything else he brings to the table.

All in all, the Cavs are finally going in a direction and they seem to know what they want. Solid players, good personalities, hard workers, tough players, cares about defense. My guess is the more they like what they see from TT, the closer JJ’s foot gets to the door, but they have to feel absolutely sure about him first.

Picking 4th in this draft with Kanter and Williams gone was not a good spot to be in, but I do believe the Cavs made the best of their pick. Even if TT never averages more than 15 ppg. I know people will always be saying he not or he wasn’t worthy of the 4th overall pick, but who at that spot really was, considering everything? In a normal year the players there at 4 would most likely be the players there at picking around 8th or 9th overall, maybe even later. In this draft, when judging TT, it's unfair to compare him to being the 4th overall pick and was he worthy of that but rather to is/was he the best or close to the best player that was available considering who was there at 4.
