Can somebody dig up Colt McCoy's exact stats out of Shotgun only? everyone believes he's at his best out of the Gun, I need to see the stats to prove it.

I've been posting the stats off and on through the season. They're not 100% accurate, mostly because of plays involving penalties, but they're essentially right.

-----------------------------------------

104/157 937yds 66% Shotgun

To:
WR 55/87 561yds 63%
TE 23/35 208yds 66%
RB 26/35 168yds 74%

-----------------------------------------

92/165 933yds 55% Under Center

To:
WR 41/81 491yds 51%
TE 33/60 334yds 55%
RB 17/23 113yds 74%
QB 1/1 -5yds 100%

-----------------------------------------

There was a noticeable change in the offense this week. Typically McCoy only stands shotgun on obvious passing downs and late in the game when the run is abandoned. This week the shotgun was worked into the normal offense. There were 5 more passes and several runs coming from shotgun. They were also targeting deeper routes this week, but when they got inside field goal range, it changed to running and/or dink passes. They started playing it safe and made bad substitutions.

Daniel Wolf made a couple of interesting Tweets earlier about Colt:

Per PFF:

#Browns QB McCoy has the 6th best pocket presence of any #NFL QB, per PFF. Only behind Big Ben, Romo, Ryan, Manning & Freeman.

This is a HUGE stat: Did u know #Browns QB McCoy has a better deep passing accuracy % than Matt Ryan, Ben Roethlisberger

Yeah, I've seen his deep passes. They're basically comeback routes. That one I'm not buying. I'd like to know how they measure pocket presence though.

Hopefully with some more game experience under center he'll get more comfortable and start looking better. He hasn't really done it much in his career. I'm not counting on it, but it would be nice if that's all his problem was.

What's the sample size though? Ryan and Reothlisberger throw deep all the time, and just by the nature of deep passes there's going to be misses. It seems like Colt hasn't thrown deep nearly enough to truly make that stat meaningful.

My opinion of Colt is that he's just not that good. I think he struggles with the way the game is played in the NFL and I don't know if he can overcome it. He struggles to thread the needle, to throw receivers open, and to put the ball in the end-zone.

Fixed.

There's no hot reads for McCoy either.

McCoy knew Alex Smith was getting the ball, but isn't allowed to audible. They're setting the guy up to fail. Could you imagine if Peyton Manning wasn't allowed to audible?

Listening to Shurmur it's not clear at all what McCoy can and can not do. It appears he can't change the play called, but at the presser the other day Shurmur said he can audible. I have no idea at this point what he's allowed to do.

I like Colt McCoy. I believe this kid should be allowed to do what the hell he wants to do. We were told that his biggest asset is his smarts. Why the hell not use it then? It's hard to believe if McCoy could have been able to change the Smith play call that he would have left the call as is.

As the days go by and thinking about just that one play, there is no way Shurmur will be a good head coach. It's even hard to think of any other plays in the past that were so far off base in a crucial time of the game. I don't care what Shurmur says about it or how much Holmgren defends Shurmur. What's Holmgren going to say anyway? He's not yet prepared to bring in another head coach so he has no other choice than to defend Shurmur at every turn.

I disagree. The only reason he is struggling is because of what he has to deal with. We now know he is also dealing with an inept head coach who is calling TE runs up the middle with 2 minutes left in a 2 point game. I feel he's struggling mainly because of his O line and his Head Coach. Allow the kid to do his own thing and he might not be struggling.

The excuse machine for Colt McCoy's inept play is in full gear.

Dude has been abysmal. Shifting blame from one person to another won't take away from the fact the person who matters most is Colt McCoy.

Until the light goes on, it's going to get worse before it gets better.

Has this new radio show owned by the Browns helped us or hurt us? Does anyone else think this Vic guy who is the host cannot really be anywhere close to unbiased when talking about the Browns, etc? I've listened to him a few times now and I just can't get into the new show. The Brown's decisions seem to be never wrong and that includes Pat Shurmur.

I know we did this new show thing in order to promote the Browns, etc, but I don't like a host who seems to side with the FO and the coaching and system in general in all ways.

According to Pinkston he's not really allowed to audible. Which would explain why McCoy bolts so quickly. He reads the defense and just bolts cause he knows his blocking patterns aren't set for the blitzes coming.

This is basically what Pinkston stated. I don't know why Pinkston would have any incentive to lie about this.

Holmgren is not going to say anything. The guy hasn't spoke about the offense yet, I don't think he will. My hope is Shurmer will start to let Colt audible and give him hot reads next year.

If you don't like the show, then switch to 92.3 during that hour for the Bull and the Fox.

As soon as he's allowed to audible and plays poor, I'll jump right on the hate Colt McCoy bandwagon.

Thanks for the tip about the 92.3. It only took me two shows to know I didn't like the new one. :)

It entertains me to read excuses for why a spread quarterback trying to learn how to line up behind center should have the freedom to audible. This year, Colt has to learn how to play an NFL style offense, which goes against what he has been programmed to run in college. If he had full license to run audibles, Colt would be changing the play-calling to suit his tastes, not the coaching staff.

The franchise has not invested much financially in McCoy. Colt is due about 5 million over four years, and he was taken in the third round. There are plenty of backup quarterbacks in the league making more money than that. In fact, Seneca Wallace averages twice as much per season. This year is Colt's trial by fire to prove that he can be an efficient quarterback in an NFL offense, or just the backup his contract precludes him to be.

The idea that the entire direction of the franchise should cater to McCoy's inabilities is exactly why the Browns have been unwatchable for a decade. The idea that McCoy is blowing a great opportunity, and the Browns are going to draft a REAL franchise quarterback who can run an NFL offense this offseason is the winning direction.

as others have said 1 out of 2 is better than 19 out of 40.

and the browns have the lowest total number of 20+ yard plays in the league, last time i checked it was 12 (6 quarters ago), so yeah colt definitely is almost never throwing it deep.

also colt has NEVER audibled, why are people shocked that he isnt allowed to on the browns. the longhorns ran a check with me offense most of the time colt was there. unless he was calling audibles in HS, he probably literally has zero experience doing it. meaning the not being able to audible thing is on him, not on shumur
