How long do you think Fred Mcleod was waiting to say the words "AND WE ARE GETTING 3G SERVICE IN THE INSERT ARENA NAME!!!!!!!!!
Are you fucking kidding me? Do you realize how long it took to acquire Mo, Z, Jamison?!?!
That said, the jury is still out as to whether or not Gee and Samuels are even able to be role players on a good team.
Not really. The Cavs had the role players. Mo is a fine role player, he's just not capable of doing what the Cavs asked of him. Same with Jamison, Z, Shaq, etc. The team simply didn't have another star which caused them to ask their role players to do more tahn they could. Basically, they surrounded him with just role players.
Still think role players have little to do with the speed of the rebuild. Gee and Samuels aren't going to make the team contend any sooner. Drafting an impact player like Drummond will do that though. Filling out the roster with role players is basically the last piece of the puzzle.
WOW, you guys are in dream land. I dont even know if Thompson will get to an all star game any time soon. Classic homerism.. Turning an average player into an all star. We go 2-2 and an average player becomes an all star
Actually i forget, how long DID it take to get Z?
Wow...you obviously haven't been a fan very long. Z was injured for years, and took a very long time to develop into a serviceable big man in this league. If you had read my entire post, you'd have known that I listed various ways to get role players -- including drafting and developing them.
We only had one problem with that team - LeBron quit in the middle of the playoffs. THe role players were fine, that was a championship team.
Yours is the revisionist history. Why does this keep coming up here, even in a thread about ALONZO GEE? Why do people still buy in to the ESPN line of "Cleveland was garbage except for LeBron?" Because we lost so many games last year? You mean after we lost LeBron AND Shaq AND Z AND Delonte - AND Andy for almost the entire season - AND so many others due to injuries that at one point we only had 8 guys dressed to play?Revisionist history.
The role players were garbage aside from Shaq for a few games. Lebron deserves blame for that series, but I love how his shitty teammates always get free passes. If the 2010 Cavs won the finals they would have been pushing the 03 Spurs, 94 Rockets, and Rick Barry's Warriors for least talented championship teams ever. In any playoff series Cleveland had the best player and the other team would have next 4 best players. If you wanna blame Lebron, fine. Blame him for not being a miracle worker that couldn't carry that awful supporting cast to a championship.
This is of topic but Z was servicable from day 1 (missed first year to injury). There was no development period. He was a big factor in the Cavalier's making the playoffs in his rookie season as a starter the entire season.
Back on topic........for roster flexibility our GM needs to find a couple of guys who can fill a role as a rotation player / fringe starter that are on the minimum or close to. Anthony Parker, Alonzo Gee, Samardo Samuals are three decent examples of this.
Despite being selected to the All-Rookie First Team in 1997–98 and signing a contract extension in 1998 that was worth $70.9 million over 6 years, Ilgauskas played only in 5 games over the next two seasons. On January 26, 2000, he had a surgery on a fractured navicular bone in his left foot.
He remained the starting center for the Cavaliers in 2000–01. He was injured again in December 2000 and was out for the season. The injury dealt a blow to the Cavaliers. After winning 15 out of 23 games with Ilgauskas, they finished with a 30–52 record.
He returned in December 2001 and was mostly used as a backup to Chris Mihm for the rest of the season.
