2012 NBA Free Agents

Do Not Sell My Personal Information
I like gilbert I do...But name me a big free agent signing in the past 7 years? And dont say jamison because thats a joke

Ray Allen turned us down to re-sign in Seattle. Michael Redd did the same to stay in Milwaukee. As stated, Larry Hughes was coming off a pretty good year himself, was widely considered one of the best SG in the FA class, and is who we ended up with after Allen & Redd denied us.

The other years, we were over the cap, which means we couldn't offer anything but the Exceptions.

How is any of that Gilbert being cheap?

Name me a player LeBron James recruited hard to come to Cleveland in 7 years.

It makes a big difference in today's NBA.

So like I said we will never have a big name free agent come here! We have R.O.Y and core of young guys with idk 25 mill in cap space and no one will come here but foreign bums....You know it and I know it..We are building good young talent but wont matter unless we get lucky like okc.

With the exception of Miami, championship teams aren't built through free agency.

Free agency is for adding role players, pieces. Not finding core players. That goes for EVERY team.

There's always an element of luck when a team wins a championship or makes a good run. We lucked out and got LeBron for 7 years, Orlando with Shaq, OKC Durant, Miami with every Eastern Conference contender being decimated with injuries or old as fuck.

But to your point, you're right, Cleveland isn't a major free agent destination. But don't underestimate our front office's role in that. Old free agents ring chase (we aren't at that stage yet obviously). Young free agents typically put the total dollar amount at the top of the priority list (see Gordon, Eric). If we offered Nic Batum the max, don't think for a second he wouldn't jump on a plane to Cleveland and sign our offer sheet. Problem is, doing that is stupid. Going out and spending a shit load of money on free agents is not the way to be successful in the NBA. Ask the Wizards. Miami is the exception and not the rule. They just had the perfect storm of good weather and players who were too big of pussies to finish what they started.

Patience, we are doing this the right way.

If Kyrie Irving refuses to fully commit to Cleveland then yes, you are correct.

I believe Kyrie will be different and will actively recruit free agents when the time is right.

Take a look at this year's free agent crop.

Deron Williams, Steve Nash, and Jason Kidd are all point guards, which the Cavaliers don't need.

Eric Gordon and Roy Hibbert are commanding max contracts, each of which would be risky to hand out for different reasons.

Who's left?

Brook Lopez, Nic Batum, Ersan Ilyasova, Ray Allen, O.J. Mayo, Kris Humphries, Chris Kaman, etc

Allen will be retired by the time we're contending again, so cross him off. The Nets aren't expected to let go of Lopez. The Blazers are reportedly matching any offers for Batum. Humphries is redundant for this team...you could probably say the same for Kaman. The Cavs have interest in Ilyasova, but how high do you go for a stretch 4?

Want to empty the bank account for Mayo?

The Cavaliers are playing this smart unlike Phoenix, who is spending to spend.

The 2013 Free Agent Class has some interesting names: Dwight Howard, Chris Paul, Andrew Bynum, Al Jefferson, James Harden, Josh Smith, Steph Curry, Tyreke Evans, and Serge Ibaka.

I've always liked Jefferson and would be interested in him should the Cavaliers trade Varejao, but other than that I don't see the Cavaliers nabbing any of these players.

2014 is where it will get interesting. Kobe Bryant, Dirk Nowitzki, Danny Granger, Luol Deng, Paul Pierce, Pau Gasol and Andrew Bogut are all unrestricted free agents. LeBron James, Dwyane Wade, Carmelo Anthony, Amare Stoudemire, Chris Bosh, Rudy Gay and Zach Randolph have either a player option or early termination option, which means they can opt-out and become unrestricted free agents as well.

That group alone (14 players) has a combined 13 championships and 76 All-Star appearances.

Rodney Stuckey, Jason Richardson, Rip Hamilton, Thabo Sefolosha, Caron Butler, Andrea Bargnani, and Marcin Gortat will also be free agents.

By the summer of 2014, if all goes according to plan, Kyrie Irving will have established himself as a top five NBA player and full-fledged superstar. Tristan Thompson will have developed his post moves and added a mid-range game. Dion Waiters will have established himself as Kyrie's "Robin", averaging 20+ PPG. They'll also have added some good young players between now and then with two (possibly three) 1st Round picks and two 2nd Round picks in 2013 and one (possibly two) 1st Round pick(s) and two 2nd Round picks in 2014.

The Cavaliers, likely coming off of their first (or possibly even second) playoff performance, will have a strong young nucleus and will be looking to add one more major piece to complete the puzzle, in a summer that might be one of the best free agent classes in NBA history.

Comparing Larry to Ray and Michael Is LUDACRIS

And he's saying that, at the time, Hughes was a great get. What's hard to understand about that? Sure, he turned out to be horrendous for our team, but the signing (at the time) was what we thought would've been tremendous.

No one here likes Larry Hughes, but you're the only one putting blinders on when it comes to picking him up vs. other FAs.

Another example "at the time" then was when we got jamison we didnt push hard enough for stoudemire and thats why I believe we didnt win that year!

I saw something on espn saying starting next year every million your over the cap you have to pay 2 million or something not sure if thats it but...

He didn't compare either of them to Hughes. He showed you that we went after the top guys in free agency. We lost out on Allen and Redd. We "won" on Hughes.

Easy to bitch in hindsight, but Hughes was considered a big signing, as was Donyell Marshall to a lesser extent.

Top 10 2005 Free Agents:

#3, #4, and #10 all signed with the Cavs, plus Damon Jones. If you build it, they will come (but get injured or underperform in certain cases).
