Re: Welcome Dion Waiters

A mix between Flip Murray and Ben Gordan.

I dont like his mannerisms on the court. I guess it is unfair to him that I enjoyed watching Delonte play that complimentary combo 2 guard role so much. Delonte is a bulldog on D who plays both sides of the court like a mentally unstable man's Joe Dumars, once Joe slowed down a bit.

I saw a guy who could get red hot in streaks in these Syracuse games I watched, and that will be fun a few nights of the year, but I want to see him impact the game without the ball in his hand on both ends, before I even pencil him in as a backcourt mate for Kyrie.

And that all starts with his mental approach to the game. So it will be interesting to see him progress with that.

Re: Welcome Dion Waiters

The only conclusion I am going to come to right now is that Dion Waiters is not well spoken like Kyrie Irving or even Tristan Thompson. I'm used to hearing a perfect, well thought out, answers from our recent draft picks. He doesn't always say the best thing and he comes off as a bit arrogant. "Swagger" is good, but one must not think they are better than they are. Not a huge fan of the vibe he gives off right now, but that could certainly change as his personality (what we see in the media) grows on me.

His play? Not impressed, but it was 3 games. He showed ability to get to the rack, but it is pointless unless you're good at finishing. It may have been the injury/out of shape. If not, I'm sure Kyrie can teach him how to finish layups. I never want to have a guy who gets to the rim with ease and proceeds to blow the layup (RAMON FUCKING SESSIONS). Waiters is clearly much better at controlling his body and he is able to change speeds/side step while in the lane. That is his biggest skill that I saw in those few games.

I'm all for giving this kid a fair chance to prove what kind of player he is. Would I have picked him at #4? No, but Chris Grant did and I'm willing to wait and see what exactly it was that Chris Grant saw in Dion. I'm hoping he saw a future star, and I'm hoping he's right. Allow me to be skeptical for now though.

This coupled with his body type and movements in general remind me of Raymond Felton actually.

Looking at his tendencies with the ball in his hands, his seeming disinterest in doing anything but standing out on the perimeter and occasionally waving his arms for the ball when it's not in his hands, his inconsistent outside shooting, his role at 'Cuse, and his height, I'm a little worried that we just picked our instant offense back-up PG / combo guard off-the-bench with the 4th overall pick. I'd be more worried if it weren't so ridiculously early, but I'm just having trouble seeing the fit with Kyrie, given that their games seem pretty similar (just with Kyrie being better at everything currently and as perhaps would be expected).

I hope our last 2 4th overall picks didn't get us our first guard and first forward off the bench.

On the plus side, they might get us our starting all-star small forward next season.

Re: Welcome Dion Waiters

As Rch said, attitude will be the most important thing progressing forward with Dion.

At the very least, I'd rather have a guy who needs to learn to excel at playing without the ball rather than having to try and transform a guy who can't do anything off the dribble into someone who can.

The disappointments

Dion Waiters | Cleveland Cavaliers
Summer stats: 12.3 ppg (30% shooting), 3 rpg, 3 apg, 1 spg

Waiters looked like a combo-guard, and often more like a point guard without great passing skills. Which would be OK if Cleveland didn't already have one of the top young point guards in the league. I know the staff is high on Waiters, based on scouting him all season, but no one in Vegas saw what they had seen all year. He'll likely play a good amount, so he'll have plenty of chances to figure things out.

Tyler Zeller didn't get any mention.

Even better. He will make more people look stupid for not realizing how good of a ball player he is. Under the radar yet above expectations. Everyone wins except the eyes that didn't see him.

Re: Welcome Dion Waiters

His interviews are Jeremy Lambish. Remind me of JJ Hickson's interviews when we drafted him. Can you really be that bad at interviews??

Yeah, he'll get in shape and be a big offensive threat no doubt. Seems intelligent with the ball. But is this a guy that's gonna crash the defensive boards, take a charge, move without the ball, do things that don't show up in the stat book? Doesn't seem like it to me. Hope I'm wrong.

I'm sorry, but there are very few occassions when your 2 guard should be getting a defensive rebound. If your big men are worth a lick then they should be getting the rebounds not your guards. As for taking charges there are very few perimiter players who take charges consistantly so expecting your rookie SG to do it is not right.

Re: Welcome Dion Waiters

Sorry if this has been answered - but what was Dion's FG% at the rim in college?

If he is getting to the rim at a similar rate to Wade - I'm just wondering if his shot not dropping was an aberration or a continuation of what he did at Syracuse.

You're digging too deep. "Intangibles" are an important part of becoming a terrific player. We want guys who are willing to do anything and everything to help the team win ... not just guys looking to pound the ball and do their thing.

It's sort of like the dark side of the force ... it beckons all young players with talent, but Dion must resist and become a well rounded player.

Re: Welcome Dion Waiters

Dion seems to make things hard on himself by taking a lot of difficult shots around the rim and sloppy form on his jumper. I could see him being very streaky until or unless he refines his game.

Of course if his shots actually go in, nobody is going to complain how he gets it done ...
