I don't know what shoes22 is referring to specifically, but Oden has had micro-fracture surgery on both knees. That procedure is done when there's too much cartilage damage in the knee, in order to stimulate new cartilage growth. It has had very mixed results- some players can come back fine but many players have had their careers hampered or been forced to retire due to cartilage issues.
he has already recovered from this surgery on one knee and played at a very high level - he sat out a year, had a solid rookie season, and had a PER of 23.1 when he injured his second knee (23.1 would be be 2nd best center in the league this year). I understand that his recovery from that injury had setbacks, but I don't think there is any evidence that there is permanent structural damage and there has been plenty of time since the last surgery to allow for a full recovery.
