Anderson Varejao

Re: Bynum Presser

Here's the elephant in the room, though. If we plan on being a major player in free agency next year, then one of Varejao, Bynum, or Thompson won't be on the roster by next season.

I don't see the hubbub about FA 2014, I guess LeBron, but I have a big feeling he's gonna win again, and opt back in. I don't want Carmelo and Carmelo doesn't want us, I don't want Rudy Gay either.

I really want Deng though, I think if Varajao plays amazing till the deadline again, and we get a good offer, we need to take it.

If the team is playing well they aren't going to unload Andy if he is playing a big part in that success.

If the team isn't playing well, we don't need to worry much about the summer of 2014 as we won't be much of a player as it will have meant we didn't make much of a leap from last season and no one is going to want to come here.

If we are in a position where we are dealing Andy it means the season went bust. I don't want anything to do with being in that position.

Re: Bynum Presser

The "fan" part of me hopes that we can somehow keep Andy for the rest of his career, if he can be signed for a reasonable contract. I consider him the heart and soul of the Cavs...more than Kyrie Irving, Dion Waiters, Tristan Thompson or anybody else. Every minute he's on the floor he's an exemplary model of how to play the game, he provides veteran leadership, and he will never not be a useful player off the bench.

He's more than just a role model, a leader, and a nice energy guy off the bench though. When healthy he's a top-25 player in the league, and arguably the best player on our team until Kyrie learns to play D (yes, good offense + good defense > elite offense + terrible defense).

Re: Bynum Presser

Andys contract is 4.5 mil guaranteed I think this year. At that price theres no use in trading him. But at 9 mil, then all that injury prone, and age stuff starts ringing in my ear and ima say trade him. Itll help with 2014 also.

You're thinking of his contract next year (2014/2015 season).

If Andy stays healthy then I truly think they are going to move him, before he has a chance to hurt himself and his value again. It's no secret they've been open to trading him for years; a lack of depth in the front court has prevented them from doing so. Now that they are a bit deeper, with four guys who can play center, I wouldn't be shocked to hear his name coming up in trade rumors again.

The other thing that needs to be taken into consideration is fit. I really hope that Tristan is able to develop a consistent jumper, or I think he is going to be wearing a different uniform before long, which is really too bad because he is an energetic defender and rebounder who improved by leaps and bounds last season.

Re: Bynum Presser

Trading Andy made sense when we were in rebuilding mode. Now that we're shifting back into win-now mode, he's just as valuable to us (arguably more valuable because of how well he fits with Kyrie) as he is to any other team. If he were blabbering about how he's working so hard to come back better than before and how much he loves Cleveland and how he's going to be an all-star and be completely healthy and take us to the playoffs we would not be talking about trading him.

This. Plus the argument that the Cavs have "4 guys who can play center" is far from guaranteed. Bynum's health is an enormous question mark, Thompson can play spot minutes at C but we don't want most of his minutes there, and I think many people on RCF would start a riot if Zeller is forced to play a majority of our C minutes this year. Varejao can still have a hugely important role on this team giving us energy, D, rebounding, vet leadership and some scoring at both the PF and C positions.

If there's a trade available that makes a lot of sense for the Cavs, I say do it. But this is a much different situation than the past several years for us. Varejao makes sense playing for a young Cavs team whose goal is to be a solid playoff team this year.

Re: Bynum Presser

If the Cavs have a problem creating cap space a year from now then it's a good problem to have as it means they don't want to part with Andy or Bynum. I highly doubt both those guys are gonna be 100% healthy all season and thus present such a problem in the first place.

Re: Bynum Presser

I don't think you trade Andy with so many questions about Bynum's health. He really is a great fit with the team and Kyrie especially. They are the only dudes on the team with chemistry.

I don't get the idea of trading Varejao either. We want to be a playoff team, then a healthy Andy is a big part. It's unlikely, but a combo throughout the season of a healthy Bynum and a healthy Varejao at center is the best in the league. I don't see any other team with a 1-2 punch at the position like that.

People like to talk about Bynum as a top center, the best behind Howard nowadays when healthy. I can't disagree with that, but I think Varejao is a top 5 center when healthy. We have two of the best at their positions when they are healthy - and both at the same position.

I only would trade Varejao next offseason if it was for cap space, but even then I would be leery. I really hope they can work it out so he can stay with the Cavs for his career, or close to it. Pull a Big Z. My greatest hope is that Bynum is healthy, loves the city, loves the fans, and wants to stay. The Varejao wants to stay. That they split time at center for a couple of years and help the Cavs dominate in the paint. Reality says that is unlikely, but the talent is there for that.

Frankly, Tristan and Bennett could be another great combo at the 4, though they have further to grow on D.

Varejao might be top 10 but definitely not top 5 center in the league. Not even closeeeeee

I agree that Duncan, Howard, and Gasol are all better. Not sure who else you would put in front of him. Take his injuries into account and he slides significantly, but when healthy you can certainly make the case he's a top-5 center in the league.
