Cleveland Browns New Head Coach Search, 2014

Do Not Sell My Personal Information
Adam Gase, to my knowledge, and backed up by the ESPN article today, was the first candidate the Browns requested permission to speak with after firing Chud.

He was, if not the top candidate, then at least a priority candidate for this team.

Which once again could not sell the job to the top guys on their list. While we still await word on Quinn, who was also one of their priority guys.

Now what does everyone say if they don't get Quinn?

Not my point, though... My point is, how are we to know that they just wanted to go out and drop the panties for a specific guy or guys? A coordinator was among the first interviewed and is still someone they're apparently looking at. I honestly don't think that anyone was "their guy" yet and I don't think it was ever really like that unless someone like the three I mentioned before indicated an interest. First McDaniels was the guy.. That was because there was an easy narrative that told you how.. Now Gase is the guy because that's what we're told and because Haslam is friends with Manning... You just don't know, ya know?

I want McDaniels to coach this team.

It seems like the only thing that would make sense.

Full circle.

Yes, you would say that. This is actually where I lean, to be honest. You could also say that about most of the teams who had openings this year. Jon Gruden is still at ESPN, Bill Cowher is still at CBS, Saban is still at Bama, etc.

Any coach out there that was hired thus far could be (and IMO would be) considered a "second tier" candidate and a failure by Browns fans. Before everyone got on their knees for the most heralded candidate (Gase), he was a reach.

What I know is Dan Quinn was interviewed on the first day, which would make me think that they weren't just trying to get the biggest name out there. I call that Manginiing.

O'brien was hired this year by the Texans. Am I wrong remembering the Browns not being able to get him or the fans clamoring for him to be hired.

Wouldn't full circle be Chud rehired for another season?

Yes, I still believe he was the top target all along.

No, I don't believe that the Browns didn't want to wait an additional 2 weeks.

But I don't agree with your last sentence. "Putting feelers out there" is not the same as sitting down for an interview & selling the job. We never got the chance to sell this job to our top target.

That's when I'll worry.

I have no doubts that this is a tough job to sell based on the firing of Chud after 1 year.

However, people are flipping out for nothing.

Sorry, I can't flip out because a guy who had mild interest in the job this entire time, pulled his name out of the running without us having a chance to sell him on the job.

If Quinn, a guy who's been known to have more than just mild interest in the job, turns us down, that's when I'll worry & start to question everything.

I'm not flipping out because the candidate who had mild interest turned us down I'm upset because the guy who by most reports we had more than a mild interest in, turned us down without even interviewing. The organization has a black cloud over it and this new regime has only made it bigger in NFL circles. That's not good when we go into Free Agency and the top guys pass us over because of who's calling the shots.

I'm still waiting on the final call here from the Browns on their head coach to make judgement but it gets harder and harder to back them.

I wasn't directing that question towards you, just more generally.

I'm just curious how people will react if they don't get Quinn, considering he seems to be the guy fans are HOPING was really the top dog all along.

Kelly is the only guy on that list who's an NFL Head Coach though. You act like they said no to the Browns and got hired by another team. It was to my understanding that The Browns moved on from Chip Kelly and not the other way around.

As for the bolded when was it reported by some of the media that we had interest in Gase we still kept interviewing canidates. Did you want them to stop the interview process just because we had supposed interest in a guy who we never even interviewed?

The Browns did back away from Kelly because to Kelly the Browns weren't worth giving up what he had at Oregon. Now look what happened when a team that was worth it came along.

Who is their guy? Did they come out and say who their top guy on the list was? Or did the media makeup a list and fans run with it? Wisenhunt was a lock for the job in DET the next day he was the Titans head coach. But He was their guy right?

If you think they eventually end up with a guy who was even top 5 on their original list then you've lost you're mind.

On the outside looking in, why would Gase want to sit down with the Browns. What makes it appealing?

Whether they weren't able to sell it because of the perception of the organization, or because they were rebuffed in putting out a feeler to him, the point remains the same.

I have a hard time believing Gase's lack of interest comes down to a timing issue with the Super Bowl.

Because there's only 32 NFL jobs yadda yadda.

Well now, hold on.

There's a significant raise, it is a rise in responsibility/voice (could be a deterrent), 4th pick to jump-start your tenure (good draft picks), decent defensive roster with an offensive blank canvas.

If you're going to knock the job, say why. Your reason is those who are in control and that's a big factor, but it doesn't make the job untouchable. I will admit that the amount of voice that a coach seems to have (from what I've read) can't be very appealing when it's the other two guys' long sought desire...
