Anthony Bennett

Do Not Sell My Personal Information
Technically speaking, the Cavs will debut two #1 picks next season because we're still waiting for Anthony Bennett to show up.

Kind of scary to think about how much better our team could be next season. I still love Bennett's skill set. If he's in great shape coming in (which he has no excuses not to be), I think we see the number one pick we expected. Wouldn't even surprise me if he overtakes Thompson as a starter next season at some point.

There is a pretty good chance TT is not even here.
That being said you never know if AB will be part of a major deal himself, but I doubt it.

I'm curious, what exactly is the number one pick we expected? Bennett was never a defensive star at UNLV. Furthermore, even in college, Bennett had difficulty creating his own shot. He has the athletic tools to develop his game, but what exactly can he become? Personally, I think he will be a solid role player at best. I hear this entire board tout what Bennett can become, so what am I missing? What tools did Bennett show you either this year as a Cav or last year at UNLV to prove your case?

If our organization think he is at all better than he showed last year they would be smart not to deal him. Any trade would be selling for pennies on the dollar.

Bennett like most 1 and done's, it is about projection. Some can kick ass right away like Davis, but most suck for awhile.

We all know that he isn't refined defensively yet. However, being a poor defender in college was a product of defensive effort. He actually has very good feet. Also, offensively as a 4, there is nothing that he doesn't have the ability to become. He's already a somewhat polished shooter as a 4, and I believe once he's in shape, he has more than enough quickness to create mismatches. It's clear that he's not a 3 as we wishfully hoped, but he is a skilled ball handler for a 4. With his long wingspan and strength, he can be a terror on the glass. Once the kid gets some confidence and some playing time, I believe he will flourish this year. Especially if we draft Embiid; it's the perfect complement to him.

But my question is, what has changed? Is it just one more year in the pros? Because none of what you mentioned suggests this upcoming year will be successful for AB.

The big thing which WILL change is you will see AB get consistent minutes. That is something he didn't get at all last season. Could he still be a failure as a player? Sure. He however does have a lot of talent in various different capacities. To me, if he fails, it either will be because of his lack of confidence or because his body breaks down.

That's fair. Do you know any players who have faced similar circumstances? My big concern is that I do not think we can bank on his success whatsoever. Sure, it would be nice to believe he can be a solid role player, but more minutes does not guarantee that.

MB forcefed him minutes for the first 23 games. Any other player would have been yanked after 5 games and never saw the floor again. What kind of consistent minutes did you want to see from a player putting up a 1.8 PER?

I do agree with you, I think if he does end up being a bust it will be due to his mental makeup. He seems extremely sheepish and timid. The exact opposite of what you see from players in the playoffs right now. Scares me to think what would happen to him mentally in a big playoff game.
