Johnny Manziel: Swan Won't Return His Calls

Do Not Sell My Personal Information
Same reason RG3 is a running QB. They have an amazing talent at running and stretching plays. They can't resist running because they are outstanding at it. Unfortunately in the NFL, the competition is bigger, faster and stronger...so running QBs don't last long.

So is it out of the question to turn them into pocket passers who utilize their mobility within the pocket? I would hope not. May be an uphill battle but I'd like to see if we can do that with Manziel.

Russ Wilson has proven it can be done with a guy who has legs but not ideal height.

JFF hasn't proven that he has the composure and mindset to fulfill a role within a system that suits him. He also doesn't have Marshawn Lynch.

I'd think the Browns are really trying to model themselves into Seahawks pt 2 with a mobile QB, battering ram RB and a physical secondary that generates turnovers.

As to whether they can accomplish it will come down to Johnny and coaching.

RG3 was primarily a throwing QB in college. Thats why the redskins gave up the world for him. He was showing he could be the all world athletic QB, that relied on his arm.

its really unfortunate that happened to RG3, but its clear he has regressed as a QB

Steve Young had 6 rushing touchdowns in 1998 his 13 year in the league. Throughout his career he typically had 4 or 5 rushes a game. essentially a rush for every 5 passes.

Cuningham played 16 years. his rushing attempt did taper off after his 9th year but he was able to transition as a less mobile quarterback and extend his career.

Manziel is a smart runner. He will slide, duck and or run out of bounds His mobility isnt a negativity as people like to project . it is a plus.

RG 3 does not know how to do any of these things. When he slides it looks like he is gonna break his leg. poor comparison.

Manziel played in a read option system in college. he has some adjusting to do We have seen Manziel for a total of 4 series and a few preseason games with a vanilla offense.

His running should be the least of the concerns.

Of course that means he runs a greater risk of getting injured, anyone who argues otherwise is kidding themselves (see above).

Manziel's career will rest on his abilities to be efficient as a passer.

I think Shanahan will put him in a position to succeed and not trying to do too much too soon.

But I'm skeptical of that ability given his raw mechanics. Though I must admit, they looked marginally better today.

The Browns were always looking for a chance to play Manziel. First round QBs are going to get their shot.

Hoyer having 3 poor weeks in a row was enough to make the switch.

Will be an interesting experiment.

I'm not sure its ever really been done successfully. Guys like Luck and A-Rod are really mobile, but were pocket throwing QB's to begin with.

Guys like RG3 and Johnny make majority of their throws using their legs. That just never works at a high level in this league.

I hope he can become a legit pocket passer, but I have my doubts.

See, I think the Browns were looking for any excuse not to play Manziel this year. Hoyer was just so shitty the last three weeks that they really didn't have a choice. If they were just looking for an excuse to play him, they wouldn't have waited this long.

All of Manziel's passing attempts for the day.

I'll agree with boobie his
Mechanics do look slightly better and for the most part. Got rid of the ball quickly. Interested to see if we go to him next week.

I don't know if I'd call him a smart runner. He hasn't needed to learn how to slide or run out of bounds because his athletic ability has made it an unnecessary skill until now. He just has to know he can't take a beating a weekly basis and survive.

Russ Wilson won the Super Bowl literally last year and is the closest comparison to Manziel there is in the NFL in terms of body type and play style.

Hey, I've said I'm for giving it a shot. I just think its highly unlikely to work long term for a couple reasons. First, I don't think he will be able to discipline himself. He's going to see openings and say "I got this!". His ego is huge. He's going to do what he wants to do. Second, sitting in the pocket is a problem too...he's tiny! He can't see back there trying to read defenses. He's most effective when plays are broken, he's scrambling, doesn't have to look over 6'6" lineman and making something happen.

I really hated the Manziel pick and I've been completely against playing him this season, but I will admit that albeit low, my expectations were exceeded today. He looked pretty good given the circumstances. I'm not sure I want him playing while we're still in playoff contention as I'm expecting rookie mistakes, but I'm not mad he played today like I was when they initially put him in.

Not bad, honestly.
