Starting isn't the problem. The Cavaliers almost always seem to have a good first quarter Halftime adjustments are a different story.

and on cue, talk radio already talking about replacements for Blatt.Listening is a decision I regret.

"Needs to be done sooner than later before this really gets out of control"

"This team needs someone who they respect and will listen to, Mark Jackson comes to mind."

" You just knew he'd be in over his head. The Euro leagues are not the NBA."

so good bye to the beloved David? nicest coach in the league.

Is he too afraid to shake things up? I would try to start JJ at the 2 to spread the floor more for a few games because Marion isn't doing anything offensively. Imagine the threat of a legit 3 point specialist in the starting unit? That would allow for the likes of Irving and James to drive more to start off games.

We do not have a scoring problem in the 1st Q. We are in the top 5 in the league in 1st Q scoring.

This giving up leads shit has to stop as well

I'm honestly about to start watching games in the second quarter because it seems like thats when the real teams comes out

We literally have 1 player who brings it other than the starting 5 (ahem, 4 actually), and that is TT. That is not saying much. You cannot and WILLNOT sustain leads with no second unit. They'd better make a couple moves asap.

Actually, Cavs are no. 1 in first-quarter scoring at 28.5

but in the rest of games:
Q2: 24.7 (no. 17)
Q3: 24.1 (no. 18)
Q4: 25 (no. 12)

and also in first-quarter margin at +4.3, not by a little
http://www.teamrankings.com/nba/stat/average-1st-quarter-margin

Q2: -2.6 (no. 28!!!)
Q3: -0.4 (no. 16)
Q4: +1.3 (no. 8)

I know that but it puts Marion make in a reduced roll and he can always give spurts of hustle off the bench.

It seems like Blatt favors playing Love and Lebron together yet Kyrie is almost always the one credited with getting Love going in the first quarter.

I'd like to see Blatt play Kyrie, Tristan and Love together more. Love seems to play better with TT. Like a unit of Kyrie, TT, Love, Marion and maybe Dion or whoever Dion gets traded for.

For a second unit it'd be interesting to see Lebron paired with Miller, Andy, Jones, and then whoever else. Andy is a master at swatting offensive rebounds out to the perimeter. Lebron has chemistry with these guys and would get up for them. This unit could provide short spurts of instant offense.

I agree, I also wish LJ was willing to break up his mins more. I am not sure if it is best for the team when he plays the full 1st and 3rd Q, then only sits out the 1st part of the 2nd and 4th.

If you buy into the idea that we are losing on the defensive side of the ball, I thin you have to allow Blatt some time to get the guys to buy in and understand. After all, Lebron is a distinct minority that was executing playoff level defense last year.

It is possible that the problem lies with Blatts inexperience in the nba. My inexpert eye is seeing that we defend the first and second effort pretty well, but when we get to the third an fourth pass or move, the team defense is leaving an unguarded man, and we are getting clubbed for it.

Either the coach has a plan to deal with that, and the team has not learned to execute it consistently, in which case its on the players, or the coach has no plan or is unable to communicate it effectively, which in either scenario is a coaching problem. so i think you give blatt some rope, but if he cant right the ship, he is vulnerable. Its not possible to argue that he is failing because he doesnt have the talent...The question is how long do you give it, and what is the plan afterward

I'm surprised no one is talking about how he has settled in to such a messed up rotation. Marion at the 2 doesn't help our offense, and depending on matchups, only sometimes helps our defense. The reason our 1st quarter numbers are so good is that LeBron and Love start out with a bunch of energy which carries us at both ends. TT should start at center for obvious reasons. Our 2nd unit consists of only guys from last year's team, plus an old vet like Marion, Miller. I wouldn't expect that lineup to succeed unless one of Kyrie/Dion really has it going that particular night.
LeBron is gonna need more rest. Even on the court; let Kyrie run the offense more.

As I said and will repeat, the power imbalance between blatt and the stars will create an issue. There has maybe never been a coach with less power compared to his players than blatt. This makes his job hard, and nearly impossible if his message isn't getting through.

The ball may still be round but the egos on this side of the pond are on another level. I hope we give him a year because he deserves that, but we all know Mr Gilbert has a quick trigger, and may make a move possibly at Klutch's bidding

I usually don't read Joe Vardon's articles, but this one caught my eyes because of the title:
LeBron James "steals" minutes, but Cleveland Cavaliers coach David Blatt won't press charges
And this part really bothered me while reading it:
....
The Cavaliers have a rough plan mapped out for James' minutes each game. He plays the entire first quarter, and then is supposed to sit until about the seven-minute mark (or perhaps a little later) in the second quarter. Play the whole third, and then see how things are going in the fourth.

Only, as was the case in the second and fourth quarters Friday night, James often pops out of his seat when he wants to go back in, without a nod from Blatt.

Blatt said James knows the plan, but he "steals a minute or two" sometimes when he bounds off the bench early and strolls to the scorer's table. If the ball stops and the horn blows, James takes the floor.

"I'm not going to tell him to go sit down," Blatt said.

"When he's engaged and he feels good, then we go with it as long as it's not exaggerated or debilitative."

As it turned out against the Nets, Cleveland needed every bit of James in the fourth quarter. He scored eight points, including the clinching free throw with 1.3 seconds left.

James came off the bench with 7:28 remaining, and within his first three minutes hit a difficult turnaround jumper over Johnson as the shot clock expired and later drained a three.

All on a night when Kevin Love was 1-of-10 shooting and Irving was 6-of-18.

"I don't really think about the minutes I'm playing when I'm out on the floor," James said. "I feel it after the game, obviously, but I don't think about it when I'm out there.

"I'm all about team and that's all that matters, so, if some games they need to be out there 40 minutes I can do it, or if it's 20 minutes I'll do it as well."
...

I know it might sound little, but something in this situation really bothers me - I never heard of a team where a player chooses when to enter the game, and even though he "knows the plan", it is still not a good and healthy system and not a good example for the other players when you have someone who can enter the game when he feels like it or basically do whatever he wants.
Things like that will make bad habits to grow, and this is a really bad foundation for a team.
A healthy team has one commander - the coach.
