After watching Mozgov do so nicely last night, it motivated me to look around the NBA at centers:
Clearly better than Mozgov: Howard, Cousins, Gasol. These are the top 3. Then also Noah, Drummond, DeAndre and Jefferson. That's it. That's the only guys I would clearly, obviously rather have than Mozgov. DeAndre Jordan or Drummond arguably, would be the perfect center for what the Cavs need. The ultimate rim protectors.
As good as Mozgov but perhaps with more potential: Vucevic and Jonas V. Probably rather have Vucevic than Mozgov, but not Jonas V.
Same ability neighborhood as Mozgov: Hibbert, Asik, Adams, Gortat, Pekovic, Chandler, both Lopezes. In this group, including contract, I would only rather have Gortat. Asik is not a rim protector, he is more of a positional defender.
Bosh, Favors and Horford are their own category not even really centers. Bogut is in his own category. Would rather have a healthy Bogut than Mozgov, but that is not the case and never will be.
*** Rudy Gobert - including his contract, I might rather have him, at least as a rim protecting force, than any of the above. Talk about an under the radar steal!!! Blocked 6 shots last night and been doing that type of thing steadily in his minutes.
To summarize, I would put Mozgov in the 10-15 range in the entire NBA. When you consider the desperate need of this team, and the amazing contract they inherited, they did damn well IMO. The fact that he and Blatt will connect immediately is a bonus.
The so called critics overrate the picks we sent. They are useless to the Cavs. And the type of player they will get will be far from a guarantee to be useful. Mozgov is a proven commodity.
