Finally watched Fury. Actually very good, dark for a WWII movie, which you don't see alot. Surprisingly too, I didn't want to murder shia labeouf that whole time either.

Yeah I thought it was okay. Saving Private Ryan spoiled me to WW2 movies. While I've seen war films I've enjoyed more, I have yet to see a WW2 movie that was as near flawless as SPR. Funny that even 15+ years later or however fucking long it has been since that film released, nobody has really mimicked its style to create another incredible film in that category. Fury was decent but it still felt like a movie and even bordered on silly at times. To this day, Saving Private Ryan feels like a dude has a camera and is running through the actual battles. So impressive.

But shit, Fury is about tanks, so it has that going for it. That was something cool and unique I thought. And honestly I know people dislike him for some reason but Brad Pitt is a pretty good actor.

I thought Fury was pretty good. Like an 8/10. Shia LaBeouf was exceptionally awful, however.

I've always thought it was overrated overall, though the combat scenes are as good as it gets.. The first 25 minutes is fantastic, and will always earn the movie a good overall grade. And the last attack is very good as well. But in between are what seemed to me as some rather ham-handed, moralizing speeches, and the very end of the movie -- "earn this" -- ruins it completely for me. Can't really imagine anything more cruel you could to do a fellow soldier than to place a life-long guilt trip on them.

It's not WW2, but for a modern combat movie, I thought Blackhawk Down (especially) and We Were Soldiers were more consistently good.

It's doesn't have the modern realism, but The Longest Day is a fantastic movie.

I mean of course it isn't saving private Ryan, but I was pleasantly surprised with Fury. Brad Pitt is a very good actor, people love to hate simply because he is popular.

As long as we're talking war movies (and WWII in particular), gotta give that shout out to Enemy At the Gates. Love that movie.

.

Then you HAVE to watch Band of Brothers. Mini-series, but a similiar camera style. Seems realistic in a military sense and an emotional way, definately a 10 out of 10.

Thanks, but I've both read the book and seen the series multiple times (own it on DVD, I need to upgrade it to Blu Ray and watch again).

It's excellent.

This sounds kind of nitpick-ish. But yeah, the stuff outside the combat is pretty standard war movie shit. I don't really judge war movies by their plot and dialogue although some surprise me in those categories (on occasion). I once had the thought that SPR was overrated and I chalked this up to the fact I've seen it so many times I can recite the dialogue like a robot. Haven't watched it in probably 6-7 years now though. Looking back, it absolutely is the best war movie I've seen.

Black Hawk Down and We Were Soldiers are absolutely fantastic, though. I put Black Hawk Down up there with Saving Private Ryan, honestly. We Were Soldiers was pretty fresh and I like that film as it's pretty damn powerful but out of these three war films WWS has the most eye-rolling moments IMO (all the stuff with the wives, and delivering the letters etc should have been cut). I read both books that go with BHD and WWS too, though. Great non-fiction.

I haven't seen it mentioned yet, but I saw Kingsman on opening night and it didn't disappoint. Very solid pace and almost as funny as it is violent/action-packed. Samuel L. Jackson was the perfect Valentine and Colin Firth was a badass (the Free Bird scene is ridiculous). I'd definitely recommend it -- 8.5/10.

I don't usually watch war movies anymore but the tank angle piqued my interest. I thought it was ok. The ending battle was beyond ludicrous in premise and execution. Lots to nitpick (never see a war movie with a military guy).

Nice to see the spearhead getting love though.

Yeah the ending was just so Hollywood.

Finally caught 'Gone Girl' on the plane ride to Hawaii today. Bloody great film. Direction and cinematography was exceptional - infusing the dark elements of the film with exceptional score and story-telling had me on the edge of my seat all film long.

It's also helped me warm up to Ben Affleck as Batman which was a major Hollywood issue I've been trying to deal with.

Actually keen to read the book as well now. Not much I love more than a film that explores the turbulent unevenness of the human emotion and psyche and what happens when a media story spirals out of control. Just a really well compiled piece of art I thought.
