Context is a beautiful thing.
Pomeranz- dominating at a high level in his first taste of pro ball- he has started at high A and done great. Better yet, he is making a point of working on his secondary pitches; many great arms can dominate the low levesl with a good fastball but Pomeranz is making the effort to work on his other pitches there. Bodes well for when he makes the next big jump in a couple weeks here.
Washington- Still just 19, he has had a rough debut so far. Let's give him a year or two before applying the bust label, though. He also had a slow start to his one year in college.
Wolters- No idea, the hand injury was a setback to say the least.
Blair- disappointing so far. He was also supposed to be a polished college arm who moved quickly, but has been up and down with the Captains. Still has time to right the ship though before he becomes labeled another Luke Jackson.
Cook- expected more from him, too. Maybe the move to the pen should happen sooner than later?
Bartolone- Well, he was drafted for his defense, not his bat. Looked like an easy sign when they took him, the offensive #s are worrisome but again, he was never expected to tear it up on that side of the ball. After looking stellar last year defensively he struggled to start the season. Honestly haven't checked up on him in the past month so I don't know if he ironed out his issues there.
Aviles- Probably the best performing pitcher currently recovering from Tommy John surgery. If 20 foot lobs were a stat, he would be a league leader.
Alex Lavisky- stats look rough, but considering he is a HSer who started the year at Lake County while working at the position with the longest learning curve? I think he is doing fine. The power has surfaced already, and that is usually the last skill to appear.
Cooper- hasn't pitched enough to really get a read on what he has done. Pretty sure he was a 'easy sign' pick, so I think expectations were all that high.
Holt- The average isn't where it needs to be and the Ks are high, but otherwise he is doing his thing- getting on base at a good clip, stealing bases and playing D.
A few disappointments so far, primarily the college arms that should be doing better seeing as they started in the SAL, but otherwise the class looks fine so far. Would have been nice if every draftee started off in minor league ball like the 3rd overall pick in the draft, but alas, not all do. I think we will have a better idea of who was worth the money and who was is a flop (and several will flop, if they get 4 future bigleaguers out of this draft it was a success) by next year.
