2011 MLB Draft

Do Not Sell My Personal Information
LOL, I remember our RCF "experts" on here raving about that draft.

Er.. I remember when the MLB had a minor league system in which most draftees spend at least a couple years in..

People love to find excuses to complain around here.

Dillon Howard:

Has a real loose arm and a good delivery. Front of the rotation potential if he can get his changeup to an above average level.

Another big body guy with a deceptive delivery.

Looks like he hides the ball extremely well. Not sure how his stuff projects, we'll just have to wait and see.

Not much time to get to deep into these guys.

I'm working on my own team's draft press release, plus Boston is in town.

But saw those two vids today and wanted to post.

Wow Washington drafted well 3 years in a row

Gonna be a tough sign, but then again after having to wait 49 freakin' picks between the first rounder and 2nd rounder it may be worth it to throw a few extra dollars his way. Plus, the 3rd rounder Sisco doesn't look like a hard sign so maybe they were trying to save a few dollars here and there. Dillon Peters looks like the Howard consolation pick- if Howard balks at signing, throw the same money at Peters and see if he inks. Would be a successful draft if they can get both to sign.

OK, so since I can't judge all of those guys for sucking so far, I guess we can't say Pomeranz great performance means anything either, right?

Or does it not apply when a Cleveland player is doing well, only bad?

Context is a beautiful thing.

Pomeranz- dominating at a high level in his first taste of pro ball- he has started at high A and done great. Better yet, he is making a point of working on his secondary pitches; many great arms can dominate the low levesl with a good fastball but Pomeranz is making the effort to work on his other pitches there. Bodes well for when he makes the next big jump in a couple weeks here.

Washington- Still just 19, he has had a rough debut so far. Let's give him a year or two before applying the bust label, though. He also had a slow start to his one year in college.

Wolters- No idea, the hand injury was a setback to say the least.

Blair- disappointing so far. He was also supposed to be a polished college arm who moved quickly, but has been up and down with the Captains. Still has time to right the ship though before he becomes labeled another Luke Jackson.

Cook- expected more from him, too. Maybe the move to the pen should happen sooner than later?

Bartolone- Well, he was drafted for his defense, not his bat. Looked like an easy sign when they took him, the offensive #s are worrisome but again, he was never expected to tear it up on that side of the ball. After looking stellar last year defensively he struggled to start the season. Honestly haven't checked up on him in the past month so I don't know if he ironed out his issues there.

Aviles- Probably the best performing pitcher currently recovering from Tommy John surgery. If 20 foot lobs were a stat, he would be a league leader.

Alex Lavisky- stats look rough, but considering he is a HSer who started the year at Lake County while working at the position with the longest learning curve? I think he is doing fine. The power has surfaced already, and that is usually the last skill to appear.

Cooper- hasn't pitched enough to really get a read on what he has done. Pretty sure he was a 'easy sign' pick, so I think expectations were all that high.

Holt- The average isn't where it needs to be and the Ks are high, but otherwise he is doing his thing- getting on base at a good clip, stealing bases and playing D.

A few disappointments so far, primarily the college arms that should be doing better seeing as they started in the SAL, but otherwise the class looks fine so far. Would have been nice if every draftee started off in minor league ball like the 3rd overall pick in the draft, but alas, not all do. I think we will have a better idea of who was worth the money and who was is a flop (and several will flop, if they get 4 future bigleaguers out of this draft it was a success) by next year.

Michael Goodnight (13th round pick from last year) is having a nice year in Lake County.

The Indians here would hope and pray Bauer is magically still there. As an Indians fan I'd like to believe it's possible, but it's just not going to happen. With Bauer off the board, the Indians will take SS Francisco Lindor.

IMO, he is the truest definition of a shortstop. The absolute best hands I've ever seen at the high school level, flat out gold glove ability at the position and a leader of the defense on the field. Came into the season as a mid-late first rounder but became a top 10 pick this year because of the leap he took with his offense.

Is a switch hitter, showing much more power than he did in the past from both sides of the plate despite his stature (5'10, 170 IMO - has the body for more weight). Pretty smart hitter with OK plate discipline.

From a makeup perspective, top of the line all the way around. Great kid, wants to learn, great to coach. I have that on about as good of authority as you can possibly have. Everyone who's been around the kid loves him.

Here is a couple vids from Aflac in 2010 (Age 16, pre-offensive bustout)

Just my take on things one week out, I know alot of people don't care about the MLB draft but I've become sort of wrapped up in the whole mess for the last few years.

We'll see how things shake out, but feel free to post any thoughts and comments about who you'd like to see the Indians draft.

Damn, @The Oi

Nailed it.

Bauer, IMO, is the best prospect in this draft.

Just offers more of a full arsenal than Cole....I just don't see any way he falls to 8.

AZ_ I'm just curious what is your stance on Bauer today as it relates to this draft. It's not everyday you get to reach 4 years into the past.

I think he's become his own worst enemy at times, getting himself down after a homer or a hit and trying to throw it through every bat.

His stuff is amongst the best in baseball, 4-5 pitch mix and all of them are good offerings that can miss bats.

If he can learn to stay focused on the mound and be consistent with the command, sky is the limit.
